Good news!

After the war, Turing was prosecuted for having sex with a man, stripped of his security clearance and forcibly treated with female hormones.

Bizarre logic.

We've got religion to thank for this debacle.

Very much in agreement with the 'apology over pardon' side. Trying to appear magnanimous in offering pardon is poor form. Rubbing salt into the wound imo.

Shouldn't these so-called charges be expunged rather than pardoned? A pardon would still suggest that some crime had been committed.

It's a national disgrace and a cause for shame that the UK had such backward thinking in the not too distant past. Some still do.

Turing should be put on the back of one of our banknotes.

Amazing how backward our ancestors were. I guess there's hope others still.

Turing should be on a banknote, that would be a noble effort.

"Turing should be on a banknote, that would be a noble effort."

It may also have the effect of winding up the bigots in the UK. That's also a noble thing to do.

@jimizo, if it's any consolation (know it's not) many/most other 'developed' nations got it as wrong as the UK for much longer.

In Oz, Tasmania decriminalized homosexuality in the late 1990s, sydney/nsw the mid 1980s. LGBT had more rights in post revolution france (early1790s till 1940s) than they had during and after ww2. Had to wait 1982 for homosexuality to be decriminalised.

To rephrase what you say 'it's an international disgrace' and by all accounts we are not quite there yet. Laws may not be as discriminatory these days but police, employers etc still are, in many countries.

"Great news. Within the next few years there'll be pardons for those convicted of bestiality and paedophilia. Oh happy times"

You've just convicted yourself of stupidity.

We've got religion to thank for this debacle.

We have religion for the debacle of throwing murderers and child molesters in prison too, the basis of the Westminster law system.

Yes, and centuries of butchery and persecution. I think we would have worked out that killing people and abusing children is wrong. It seems the Catholic Church only found the latter out pretty recently.
