I guess elementary schools, shopping malls, hospitals, and universities weren't enough to satisfy Putin's blood lust and anger at failing so badly with his Ukraine "special military operation"...

Now he bombs a nuclear power plant...

His list of war crimes is getting longer than a list of his palaces...

hello healthy natural common sense.

Russian army have seized power plant and have it under full control. This means that russian troppes are inside of plant.physically.

by using very common sense they are not shelling own positions.

someone pls say to Zelenskyy that drugs are not good and we are not completely dumb yet!

btw bad bad Russians still prduing electricity there and supplying it to Ukraine-any thoughts heroi?if they are that bad should switch off electricity from first moment and keep UA in dark...or???

List of people that you don’t want to be in charge of nuclear power plants

Russians
-4 ( +18 / -22 )

Russian shelling had damaged three radiation sensors and hurt a worker at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, in the second hit in consecutive days on Europe's largest nuclear facility.

This clearly shows which mentality and intelligence level the Russians have: completely stupid, insane and full of madness.

What a bunch of mentally sick as...holes.

-9 ( +13 / -22 )

cui bono?

any simple reason why russians need to shell own troops and power station under their control and with their army troops inside of it?question is for downvoters of my comment above.

btw we still di not hear reactions of UN about ukrainian shelling of jail with Azov inmates inside killed by HIMARS missiles and also how bout AI report about UA army when they are using civilians as human shields?no follow up?or you believe that people have short memory and will simply just "forget"that???

2 ( +20 / -18 )

What a bunch of cretins the orcs are, demonstrated by this false flag operation and their behaviour around Chernobyl.

By the way the russian atomic energy staff mysteriously and suddenly evacuated the site just before the first attack, can’t imagine why!

As if storing explosives, ammunition and fuel next to an atomic pile wasn’t insane enough!

Eastman, patently obvious why the rashists fired on it, to threaten a nuclear disaster and try and frighten the west in to not supplying the advanced effective weapons that the Ukrainians are using to such good and devastating effect on their shambling mob of child rapists, murderers and torturers that passes its self off as an army.

-11 ( +12 / -23 )

Whatever the Russians say they haven’t done…..they’ve done.

Whatever the Russians say they won’t do….. they will do.

They have lied from the first and will lie to the last…. you can take that to the bank.

3 ( +21 / -18 )

Eastman, sorry, the damage evidenced in the pictures released by the russians of the POW camp is not consistent with the impact of HIMARS or shelling, it is consistent with detonation coming from within the building and with the use of thermobaric explosives.

Amnesty International has been roundly denounced across the political spectrum for bowing to russian propaganda.

-1 ( +15 / -16 )

Oh come on, Russia has had control of this plant for a long time and now it decides to shell it's own locations.

So let's see, Russia understands the west doesn't believe anything it says but in some dystopian world we are to believe Ukrainian version of Russia twice shelling it's own positions like POW camp and Nuclear power plants. Oh and firing petal/butterfly cluster bombs into its own long controlled areas in Donbas!

Sorry, but Russia is a lot of things but this is getting to be a joke.

Believe what you want but Ukrainian claims are something only a fool believes.

Now I know the name calling and accusations of my being a Russian this or that will now start because why not you have no logical explanation other than to claim Russia is doing it to make Ukraine look bad and no evidence.

The difference between me and most here is I never believed either one of them their are number one and two most corrupt countries in Europe and neither is worth giving any care for.

But the junk Ukraine says or claims that people will believe shows few can actually think, even fewer use logic or facts and think feelings are facts.

-2 ( +18 / -20 )

Russia shelling themselves ? What utter garbage. Seems people will believe anything as true as long it is demonizes Russia.

Don't forget more than 14,000 citizens in the Donbass region have been killed by constant shelling over the last 8 years by Ukraine. And all you hear all the time. Russia did this, Russia did that etc.

-2 ( +14 / -16 )

Whatever the Russians say they haven’t done…..they’ve done.

Whatever the Russians say they won’t do….. they will do.

The Kremlin shot their shot way too early, with the 2016 election. Now the world knows they're internet trolls, and that they have masses of paid internet workers who are supposed to push the party line, so no one buys their propaganda anymore. If they hadn't exposed themselves in 2016, things would be way worse right now.

Actually it shows the hole in logic of those believing Ukraine.

The plant is controlled by Russia well inside Russian controlled territory.

Ukraine has complained it hasn't had any information on the safety of the plant, the workers, or how it is being maintained.

The USA has said the same so has the IAEA.

So keep that in mind, Ukraine, USA, EU, IAEA all say they don't know anything about the nuclear plant as Russia has full control.

But Ukraine knows "exactly" what was hit by "Russian" artillery in a zone Ukraine says it has no idea what is going on there just a few days ago.

Can I interest anyone believing this Ukrainian version in some beach property in Northern Canada? I figure if you believe the Ukrainian version you also are going to believe a tropical beach resort in North Canada.

-5 ( +13 / -18 )

What am I missing here? Ukraine is using NATO weapons to attack a nuclear power plant, one of the largest in the world, and Russia is to blame?

-1 ( +14 / -15 )

Oh and a side note.

After complaining about the safety of the plant, after the IAEA also raised concerns.

The IAEA asked to inspect the facility.

This did not happen because.

BBC:

Ukraine's state nuclear company said Ukraine had not invited the IAEA - and any visit would legitimise Russia's presence there.

BBC:

Yevgeny Balitsky said officials were ready to show Mr Grossi's agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), how Russians were guarding the nuclear facility while Ukrainians were allegedly attacking it.

So Ukraine is so concerned, right?

But less concerned about the Nuclear plants safety than it is about the political optics.

-2 ( +15 / -17 )

Maybe they should shutdown the plant for safety while fighting is still ongoing

Ukraine said on Sunday that renewed Russian shelling had damaged three radiation sensors and hurt a worker at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, in the second hit in consecutive days on Europe's largest nuclear facility. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called Saturday night's shelling "Russian nuclear terror" that warranted more international sanctions, this time on Moscow's nuclear sector. Kyiv said Russia hit a power line at the plant on Friday. However, the Russian-installed authority of the area said Ukraine hit the site with a multiple rocket launcher, damaging administrative buildings and an area near a storage facility.

So Russia and Ukraine both accuse each other of shelling this nuclear power facility - who to believe?

Well, let's look at some previous statements...

Feb 20th: "Russian President Vladimir Putin said diplomatic efforts need to intensify to find a resolution to the Ukraine crisis, a signal Moscow may be ready to discuss ways to walk back the threat of war in Europe."

Feb 21st: Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov denied Sunday that the Kremlin is preparing for an invasion of neighboring Ukraine, despite a build-up of roughly 150,000 Russian forces and U.S. intelligence that Russian commanders have received orders to proceed. "There is no invasion, and there [are] no such plans," Antonov said in an interview with "Face the Nation."

Mar 10th: "As for your question about whether we plan to invade other countries, we have no plans to invade other countries", said Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Pretty easy to see who to believe...

Dont disagree completely but there are also many "kind , helpful, honest, polite" people who were born, grew up, spent most of their lives under communism and later immigrated to other countries. Living under such a regime does not automatically make one un- kind, helpful etc. But I do get the point you are making.

Definitely, these people are nothing but victims of this inhumane terror that looms over their entire lives, I've been to communist Korea, Russia and China and the reality is thats everyone for himself. You have to trick your countrymen, your community, your own family members to stay alive. Defector Yeonmi Park sheds let on what really goes on. Ukraine the second most corrupt government in Europe got even more corrupt on the world corruption index after 2014 and is presently between the Philippines and Sierra Leone in corruption.

Ukraine needs Russia because it Russia is more corrupt.

So it seems Ukraine is more concerned over the sovereignty issue than safety.

-4 ( +7 / -11 )

Yes because Ukraine, fighting a defensive war would shell it's own nuc plant.

OR.....

The Russians, who have a documented history of bombing, digging around and stealing from Chernobyl and who have shown perfect willingness to bomb anything as long at it seems to serve their short term ends, did it.

Gee. That is a tough one.

I WANT to say that I am flabbergasted at the number of rubes willing to swallow the Kremlin line, but that would be a misstatement.

1 ( +10 / -9 )

Bronco....

The propaganda is getting comical, Russia is not attacking it's own forces.

In a nutshell!

Russia has FULL control of the nuclear plant and surrounding area. It has held this territory for months.

If any missiles or shells landed anywhere near the facility, and that is a big if, they were fired by Ukrainian nationalist forces.

However, in reality, this is most likely the latest in a long line of Kiev propaganda stories parroted by western media.

Correct.

Russia shelling it's own facilities, I don't think so, although the silly propaganda is quite comical.

Ownership is not the point. Fallout from a nuclear breach is. Russia have already shown themselves to be reckless; targeting civilian buildings and the like.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called Saturday night's shelling "Russian nuclear terror" that warranted more international sanctions, this time on Moscow's nuclear sector. Kyiv said Russia hit a power line at the plant on Friday.

Zelensky clearly has one

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

It is interesting to look for countries that support sanctions.

Unlike other things, no one seems to want to publish a complete list of countries supporting sanctions.

I you have a full list please link it.

The best I could find was this.

https://graphics.reuters.com/UKRAINE-CRISIS/SANCTIONS/byvrjenzmve/

Which once you read it is very sad.

Other than USA, Canada Australia NZ and western Europe. There are very few other countries, not even Israel, Turkey supposedly USA friends.

It has to fill up its graphic with a load of Actions by companies and organisations.

To make it look like the list is bigger than reality.

This is the type of western news propaganda that is why we can't even trust anything either side says.

It has always been a given Russian news was propaganda, but now we know our own news has reached the same level.

Right here in this article 99% is slanted to promote Ukraine's claim despite it being so corrupt that the Philippines is considered more trustworthy.

They could do that but then the Russians would be accused of a war crime by cutting power to civilians.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Today 10:11 am JST

Yes because Ukraine, fighting a defensive war would shell it's own nuc plant.

Why wouldn't it?

It says one thing does another.

BBC pointed out clearly that it is Ukraine that refuses to let the IAEA inspect the facility.

Russia has agreed, but the IAEA says it needs both countries to agree and BBC says Ukraine has refused because it doesn't want to give the impression of Russian sovereignty over the nuclear facility.

Think about that now!

Ukraine for months complains about the safety of those working there, Ukraine complains about operational safety, it has no control or knowledge of what is going on.

But when the IAEA asks Ukraine to give permission to inspect, Ukraine refuses.

The nice Western BBC in the linked article in the comment section points this out clearly.

So would Ukraine bomb the plant despite safety issues, clearly Ukraine has no safety concerns refusing to permit IAEA inspection.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

I have a feeling all these Russian Generals are choosing to get fired....rather than chance a HIMARS missile slamming down on their command center....

The poor performance of Russia’s armed forces during its invasion of Ukraine appears to have led to a shakeup in command, the British Defense Ministry said Sunday. Gen. Aleksandr Vladimirovich Dvornikov, who had been charged with overall command of the operation in Ukraine, was removed from his post last week, the ministry said. General-Colonel Aleksandr Zhuravlev, who had commanded Russia's Western Military District since 2018, was absent from Russia’s Navy Day in St Petersburg a week ago and has likely been replaced, the ministry said in its assessment of the war. Another general was relieved of command of Southern Grouping Forces, the ministry said.

What would be the Russian's probable motivation/plan for shelling the nuclear plant under their control? I haven't seen one mentioned yet.

Seems pretty obvious to me. By shelling around the nuclear power plant, Russian officials are framing Ukraine as irresponsibly using Western-provided weapons and risking nuclear disaster to dissuade Western and other allied states from providing additional military support to Ukraine’s looming southern counteroffensive.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Let's be realistic here!

IAEA is asking, Ukraine is saying "we didn't invite you". Does anyone think that isn't saying no?

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

Because of the invasion of Ukraine by a nuclear power Russia most countries including Japan are now looking at the strength of their own defenses. Putin claimed it was partly to stop NATO but now two new countries Sweden and Finland will join NATO. Finland has closed its borders with Russia.

It is unlikely for the time being Ukraine, the UN, IAEA, and Russia can reach an agreement about a visit to the nuclear plant, the largest in Europe.

That would be logical if

1-) Russia cared about public opinion ( it invaded Ukraine it obviously does care about what anyone thinks.

2-) If Russia thought the western media would accept it's version of events. Which we have seen the western news and governments aren't.

So there is no logical reason for Russia to do so.

But Ukraine has claimed 4 times now Russia is firing on itself and western media and people here have swallowed it without questioning.

Russia fired petal/butterfly cluster bombs into its own cities, Russia bombed it's own POW camp, Russia twice bomb this nuclear power plant.

The first time the plant was hit Ukraine said it was Russia, Russia said it was Ukraine and western media and governments believed Ukraine,

So now we are to believe Russia again fired on itself knowing the first 3 times no western news or government believed it was Ukraine.

Yeah sure.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

So you want to believe Ukrainian claims.

Ok but remember.

Ukraine claims to have killed over 40,000 Russians but the USA, UK and EU say 15,000 tops.

Ukraine claimed it completed it mission in Azovstal and didn't surender, but then demanded to know what was the fate of the soldiers that "didn't surender" POWs.

Ukraine, we are not retreating, just repositioning our troops.

Ukraine we are pushing the Russians back, next day Russia has full control of the area.

The list goes on.

You cannot believe anything either of these two say.

But hey if you prefer your feelings over facts, then nothing not even basic logic will change that.

Ukraine's state-run nuclear power operator, Energoatom, accused Russian forces of hitting the Zaporizhzhia plant and using the complex as a staging ground for striking nearby targets, including many in the occupied city of Enerhodar and the nearby Ukrainian-controlled city of Nikopol.

The people who have for weeks kept the nuclear power plants in Ukraine safe—despite the presence of Russian troops and off-site interruptions to incoming power supplies, as happened at Chornobyl, and despite the danger posed by the military conflict in the country—deserve our solidarity, our support, and our action.

What happens if the Ukraine nuclear power plant explodes?

In the worst-case scenario, the reactor containment would be destroyed by explosions and the cooling system would fail, the radioactivity of both the reactor and the fuel pool could then freely escape into the atmosphere.
