Sfjp...what makes you believe that Russia would ever risk starting a war with NATO or any other European country. All of europe is interdependent. Russian needs Europe as much as they need Russia. Clearly seen by lack of sanctions on the part of europe.

As far as NATO is concerned... They are pretty much a division of the US government. They will follow the lead of the Americans in any conflict. Therefore the hypothetical confrontation would only happen if entirely instigated by the US.

@TokyoDiman

When you consider all the processes working to degrade restraint in conflicts, poor intelligence, garbled communication, battlefield setbacks, command attenuation, and a host of other influences, it seems reasonable to consider that a military confrontation between NATO and Russia might in some manner escalate out of control.

Sfjp....do you seriously believe US wants to defend Ukraine because they care about Democracy.... The rest of Europe can see that US is trying to eliminate competitors for a rich European gas market. America is clearly the bad guy here.

The Russians have postured as if they were an overwhelming force, but the threat of U.S. airstrikes against fuel depots is not something that the Russians can dismiss out of hand. Germany is the key country, and they has made it clear that there are limits to what it is prepared to do in Ukraine and ready to defend the eastern areas of NATO. Germany does not want another Cold War. Germany depends on Russian energy and ultimately is satisfied with the status quo. The rest of Europe cannot intervene decisively. This means that any support to Europe’s eastern area must come from the U.S..

Maybe Russia can compensate Ukraine for Crimes. A year's worth of free gas?

You mean the year of free gas they already gave Ukraine since they haven't been paying for it.

Maybe they should just shut off the gas and let Ukraine "buy" it from Europe at double the cost....let's see how EU likes it when they dont pay for what they use.

“Russia occupied Crimea, which was, is, and will be, Ukrainian soil,”

Maybe the Chinese could be of assistance with this.

Sticking Crimea back into the Ukraine will cause horrendous problems, considering most of the people wanted out. See any backlash over the annexation in Crimea?

The best idea is to work with Putin to broker peace in Eastern Ukraine. Putin at this point is the only outsider that the separatists will trust, if they can trust anyone.

Maybe Russia can compensate Ukraine for Crimes. A year's worth of free gas?

If he were smart, he'd ignore Crimea and focus on stabilizing the country and then developing Ukraine to become economically powerful. That would be the best way to slap Putin in the face by saying, "We don't need you, and we can earn enough to support ourselves."

Petro Poroshenko knows who's feeding him.
