Great news, but also depressing: an Al-Jazeera correspondent yesterday pointed out that when the Russian military suffers a major defeat, it responds by dropping lots of bombs on innocent civilians.

Russia’s Withdrawal From Kherson Is Utterly Humiliating.

Now would be a good time to pull Russian troops out of all of Ukraine.

"Not a single unit of military equipment or weapons have been left on the right (western) bank. All Russian servicemen crossed to the left bank," it added, saying that Russia had not suffered any loss of personnel or equipment.

Fantasy fiction at its worst. The people writing propaganda for the Russian ministry of defense have a long long way to go before they come even close to the greats of Russian literature. People like Tolstoy and Chekov.

After failing to take Kherson in a botched offensive, Zelensky's forces are in a precarious situation.

Doesn't look like it.

23 ( +27 / -4 )

Putin must be thinking: " What would Hitler do in a situation like this?"

17 ( +21 / -4 )

Do not celebrate so much, if this is just a tactical withdrawal of Russia, its counter offensive will come, the war is not over yet and the game will be longer than expected..

Putin must be thinking how are any civilians even greeting them at all since every civilian was evacuated.

Just the first of many retreats by Russian military, until they are completely out of Ukraine, back to 2010 lines.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Great news. Keep pounding, Ukraine.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

The joy on the faces of Ukrainians welcoming the arrival of their troops belies the Russian propaganda of "Russia is Here Forever". The recapture of Kherson means the defense of Odesa. Check! Now the Ukrainian military can cross the Dnipro further upstream then come down to push the Russians back into the Crimean peninsular provided they can neutralize the threat of Russian forces in their rear in Luhansk and the Donbas where fierce fighting will no doubt continue into the spring.

Clearly more people told the Russians trying to “evacuate” them, “Screw that” than the initial Russian reports wanted us to believe.

Good for them.

For those who don't remember history, the Russian army withdrew all they way back into Moscow in 1941 and the Germans were certain the Russians would capitulate.

The Russians bunkered down through the winter and when spring came in 1942 they started rolling again.

3 years later Russian troops, after having pushed the front back 1800 km through relentless fighting, entered Berlin and Hitler was forced to commit suicide.

Yes, history is certainly repeating. Putin's forces were threatening Kiev at the start of the war. But the Ukrainians bunkered down and a month or two back started rolling again.

I expect, through relentless fighting, they will push Putin's forces all the way back and hopefully Putin is forced to commit suicide.

I'm sure Ukraine is open to a negotiated solution of Russia removing all it's forces and paying reparations.

It just so happens it was November in 1943 that the Russians had re-entered Kyiv and regained control from Germany.

It’s November now isn’t it? If I’m not mistaken.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

This is a bit different from your previous perspective that the Kherson offensive had failed after just a few days.

No one is chasing them to Moscow now. Just back to their country.

During the Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany the Russian population suffered and endured. Now it’s the Ukrainian people fighting their Great Patriotic War against Russian Invaders. They will suffer and endure but emerge victorious with an even higher sense of pride, and a hatred towards Russia for doing the unthinkable to them.

Professor Valery Solovey, formerly with Moscow's prestigious Institute of International Relations and who claims connections at the Kremlin, said the plan would involve Putin giving up all territory he currently occupies in Ukraine except Crimea - which would become a demilitarized zone. In return, Putin and his cronies would avoid prosecution for war crimes and be allowed to remain in power, Solovey claims. He said the plan was discussed between Kyiv and its Western allies before being presented to Putin's inner circle - who were said to be receptive. News of the 'surrender agreement' emerged the same day that Russia retreated from Kherson, with Ukrainian soldiers liberating the jubilant locals after eight months under Russian occupation.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

How utterly humiliating for Russia. Now wait for the horror stories that the survivors of the Russian occupation will have to tell.

-12 ( +3 / -15 )

Oh dear how embarrassing for dear mr poo tin, and such a nice man too!

I suspect the Ukrainians won’t stop for winter, they are used to it and are vastly better equipped for it than the Ill equipped russian conscripts, those that are left that is. Their only hope is either to surrender and save their lives or hope their mothers force the russian MOD to return them to russia. I also expect there will be more resistance activity in the remaining occupied areas, run collaborators, run.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

@wallace… is that real? I haven’t seen that reported anywhere yet? Great if it is. The part about Putin and his cronies being allowed to remain in power though… that all depends on the Russian people. It’s been reported in numerous sources that a lot of people are very unhappy with him. Probably not sources that his supporters here would accept though.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

@Tokyoliving its counter offensive will come, the war is not over yet and the game will be longer than expected..

Game? Once again pro-Russia warmongers cheer on Putin's militaries, state and private, knowing more innocent Ukrainian civilians will be raped, robbed or slaughtered by Putin's invaders.

Yes, I'm concerned about this as well. I'll wait a week or two to celebrate. Thankfully the Ukrainian govt are just as wary.

Besides the Russian army members blending into the crowds, the looting, raping, killing, and absolute destruction of the city they're leaving - as has been their trademark throughout this war...

I'm worried about land mines, assorted booby traps, and some other malevolent trick the Russians might be planning.

Party in Kherson tonight... the Russians may wait until everyone is in the center of the town celebrating.. and lob a bunch of missiles into the center of it and kill as many men, women and children as they can.

They're petty, hateful barbaric monsters capable of anything. They don't care for life in the slightest. They just want to wipe Ukraine off the map, killing as many people was they can along the way. The more the better.

These are the "human beings" you're dealing with.

Yeah, but that was then and this is now: different war and different fighters, but as that brilliant bearded German sage, once revered by Putin's folk in the Soviet Union, famously said, "history repeats itself as farce", which describes to a T Putin's ego-driven invasion. And let's hope that bunker part repeats itself, too, next April, this time under the Kremlin, when he's got nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Remember: No springtime for Putin!

The good people of Kherson never, ever gave up. The Ukrainian flag is now flying proudly everywhere.

So much for Mini-me stating that Kherson will now "forever be Russian".

Russians doing what they've always done - turning and running like little cowards.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

Congratulation to Ukraine, Freedom, and Democracy.

Who would have thought that the Russian Armed forces would give up Kherson and just walk away! Well Done Ukraine.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

40000 Ukrainain citizen have died and 10 of thousands of Ukrainain soldiers, how many more will die

And you will be happy to know a lot of those innocent Ukrainians are children and women. Absolutely sick.

Fascist Russia will never be forgiven, even when they their last coward has run away from Ukraine.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

But but but, what about all that Pan-Russo sentiment and the desire to be liberated from the Jewish Neo-Nazis?

What about the De-Satanization campaign?

10 ( +12 / -2 )

NATO must be rethinking it's strategies and fighting tactics when dealing with the Russian Forces. This is not the same Russia that defeated Hitler!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

3 years later Russian troops, after having pushed the front back 1800 km through relentless fighting, entered Berlin and Hitler was forced to commit suicide.

Wait, so in other words what you are saying is that a country was invaded by a Fascist madman trying to annex their territory. The brave defenders withdrew all the way to their capital in the face of the onslaught, but did not surrender. Rather they hunkered down, persevered and eventually turned the tide of the war, forcing the invaders to retreat and ultimately achieved victory?

This is actually a good analogy for current events, though perhaps not in the way you intended.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

3 years later Russian troops, after having pushed the front back 1800 km through relentless fighting, entered Berlin and Hitler was forced to commit suicide.

Your analogy is backwards. Today it is Russia that is playing the role of the Nazis in WWII while Ukraine is the is the nation defending its territory from aggression. Like Hitler in WWII Russia today is fighting using its own resources (while they last-again like the Nazis) while like Russia in WWII, Ukraine is the benefactor of tremendous Allied Lend Lease. Like Hitler pushing into Russia, the Russians pushed into Ukraine but never quite captured their capital and Kharkiv has held off the Russians much as Stalingrad held off the Nazis through enormous suffering. Now Ukraine is turning the invaders back much like the Russians turned the Nazis back and you can bet Ukrainian forces won't stop until they reach their 2014 borders.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

A better analogy for our juvenile horse was the Soviet invasion of Finland. The Soviets lost their a__es in that war with over 100,000 dead. Though grossly outnumbered the Soviets never managed to get very far into Finland and when the war was finally over all the Soviets could show for it was a 20 mile wide chunk bordering Leningrad (modern day Saint Petersburg). Aside from over 100,000 dead another almost 300,000 were injured. Like today, the Soviets claimed they were de-Nazifying Finland. The Soviets firebombed Finnish cities but their Foreign Minister Molotov claimed their parachute carried incendiary devices were "food packages". The Finns came up with a gasoline bomb they said was "drink to go with the food", using them with great effect against Soviet tanks, and the Molotov Cocktail was born.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

What about the De-Satanization campaign?

I almost thought you said a DeSantisization campaign O_O

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Russians doing what they've always done - turning and running like little cowards.

They didn't turn and run in WWII. They endured horrors practically no other nation attacked by Hitler endured and if you study some of their battles they fought well, often with brilliant tactics. But that time around they were defending the Rodina, not attacking another country.

If you look at the performance of Soviet Frontal Aviation when fighting in Egypt and Syria against the Israelis from 1967 - 1982 you see they fought bravely but were let down by inferior equipment, training and tactics. Still, they got into their airplanes and fought even as the odds were very much stacked against them. Most of the 82 Syrian aircraft shot down by the Israelis in the 1982 Bekaa Valley campaign were flown by pilots from Soviet Frontal Aviation and were being directed by Soviet ground controllers. They were not using encrypted radios so anyone could hear them talking in Russian, not Syrian, as they fought.

Russian soldiers in plain clothes are reportedly lingering in Kherson amid fears the retreat is a ploy to ambush Ukrainian troops

https://www.yahoo.com/news/russian-soldiers-plain-clothes-reportedly-225307828.html

If true, they also may be lingering to relay possible civilian targets for an upcoming bombing. It is no different than terrorists that detonate a second explosive devices when first responders, police, reporters, and witness es come to the scene of the first bombing.

The Ukrainian people should be cautious and immediately report people who do not appear to be from the area.

40000 Ukrainain citizen have died

It seems that you are very proud of that.

Unbelievable that such idiots are still around!

how many more will die

Then tell your russian mass murdering as..holes to withdraw from Ukraine which they ilegal invade, started a war and kill innocent people including women and children.

Tell the Russian mass murdering insane Mob to stop the mass murdering which they started.

And then nobody have to die anymore.

The world knows and understand now who the Russians really are and for what Russia stands for;

A war mongering insane massmurdering Mob, who even do not hesitate to kill women and children and rape young Girls.

That is how the world looks now at Russia, and this will not change for the next hundreds of years.

described how Russian troops had killed residents and looted homes.

The Russian troops had also broken into vacant homes and looted them, removing furniture, televisions, stoves and refrigerators, the villagers said.

I thought the purpose of Mr. Putin’s special military operation was liberation of the oppressed or something, not burglary and murdering civilians.

I would not blame the leaders. This says more about the Russian people. The Russian soldiers are also stealing equipment within their own units and sending that with looted items from Ukraine back to family in Russia or selling it in Belarus if they are stationed there.

Russian officers complain about equipment theft by soldiers

https://www.yahoo.com/news/russian-officers-complain-equipment-theft-125500756.html

Russia has a long history of great warriors, artists and intellectuals; however, a large majority of Russian people live like one large country bumpkin town where the mob rules, stereotypes an prejudice runs rampant, and everybody will sell anyone else out.

Unfortunately, it is mostly due to the government and their corrupt leaders. NK is no different!

Despite being communist governments like Russia and NK, I think countries leaders at the top like in Cuba and China actually believe they are making their country great.

And now those that chose to up and leave will be absolutely regretting their decision.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Many who managed to leave Kherson earlier for Ukraine territory will now return to homes decimated by the Russians. Many were looted and others given by Russian authorities to Russian's shipped in from parts of Russia to live, work and vote in Russia's sham vote.

These returning Ukrainians will need to remove all the Russian signs and return Ukraine signage, and rebuild their homes and businesses. All while remembering Russia will continue to damage and destroy the city from afar. They may still need to evacuate again in the future. Until the invasion is over, everyone remains at risk.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Earlier, the Russian defence ministry said it had finished its withdrawal from the western bank of the Dnipro river, where Kherson city lies, two days after Moscow announced the retreat.

"Not a single unit of military equipment or weapons have been left on the right (western) bank. All Russian servicemen crossed to the left bank," it added, saying that Russia had not suffered any loss of personnel or equipment.

Which is absolutely not true. A lot of equipment and ammunition will now go to the Ukrainian army.

Why would the Ukrainians destroy the dam, it will impede their advance. Misinformation put out by Russian bloggers. Like the evacuation of Kherson, good video of people with day packs, not evacuated people.

There were no allied soldiers in Ukraine, just the Russian invaders, and they have been documented looting Ukraine towns and Kherson. The nearest allied soldiers are in Poland.
