How does the concept of "put differences aside" and "we're all the same" tie up with competing under your countries flag? How can you have a "we won" attitude, and claim that generates equality?

Cant have much equality, when you have winners and losers.

Isn't that what the spirit of the Olympics supposed to be in the first place? Put all your differences aside and compete athletically? And during the original Olympic Games didn't all wars between the Greek city-states cease?

While this is a laudable ideal to promote peace, the reality is in some area's people fight a daily battle for their lives, for their rights and freedoms and those things will not take a back seat to a sporting event for "those who qualify and can afford to compete".

Rebels everywhere are not going to give up the fight for six weeks to allow stronger and more numerous forces to redeploy, rearm and refresh.

As for terrorists, they seem to care nothing about peace and life, but only about how many they can kill.

I also rememer that for over a decade 'Federal republic of Yugoslavia' (Serbia/Montenegro) was also banned for the Games (and kicked out of the UN) for all the genocidal wars and 'ethnic cleansing' crap courtesy of Slobodan Milosevic. While I was in college there was an obscene derogatory nickname for him that rhymned with his last name.

why not urge perennial truce, got as much chance of everyone doing so. just more political theatre, which is what the U.N. is best at.

How about the UN boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics while also asking the world to stop fighting for a month to ponder the ethnic genocide currently taking place in Communist China? That would be a better thing for them to do.

There's always been gay athletes whether our governments 'like' it or not. However in some countries that's an excuse to persecute them, as in Russia and Uganda where that can get you killed.

When asked what the motive is for the genocide, concern for high growth of ethnic minority population is given. Now that really makes a lot of sense. There are too many of them so let’s round them up and commit genocide. You actually believe this?

The population in Xinjiang has one of the fastest growing populations in China, jumping 18.3 per cent between 2010 and 2020 as well as Tibet, which has the highest birth rate in the country.

All this while the birthrate of Uighurs and Han Chinese is decreasing across the country. China must not be very good at genocide.
