Asked about the exclusion of girls, Muttaqi said schools had been closed because of COVID-19 -- a threat he said had lessened. "COVID... has been controlled and incidences are very few, and with the reduction of that risk, opening of schools has already started and every day it is increasing," he said.

Anybody else see an inconsistency here?

They brought the humanitarian disaster on themselves. I hate to say it, but they're the ones who should fix it. And I daresay further that the US, the EU and the UN should definitely NOT recognize them.

Not a dime. Until they prove they’ve changed their ways (which they won’t), not a dime.

I hate to say it, but the transition of government seemed to go more smoothly in Afghanistan than it did after the recent American election.

But the real failure was the collapse of the puppet Afghan government that would not negotiate with the Taliban (and visa versa) in regards to what a post-US Afghanistan would look like.

Kick back and enjoy the show.

An opium and hashish based economy is not going to win many friends in the rest of the world, despite the ROW being their largest consumer of refined and processed drugs.

They have little industry other than carpets/rugs, pomegranates, grapes and some agriculture; tourism is a tiny niche market, and reliance on donors, international and humanitarian aid; and gold seizures is not a foundation for a good economy, other than enriching the already rich.

There are supposedly 1 trillion dollars of mineral deposits, but companies may be reluctant to risk staff and capital investment in the area.

They'll need a really smooth PR campaign to win over the corporate world to invest there.

Was the US and EU invasion of Afghanistan a mistake and a violation of the UN’s principle?

The Taliban needs to pay that ransom money to Isis-K, while the rest of the country returns to the Stone Age. This is one reason why the Taliban's extremist skewed view of Islam does not work. At best, Afghanistan under the Taliban government and its Taliban offshoots will be another North Korea; at worse, it will return to the Afghanistan of the 80's and 90's.

The current recognized Taliban leaders are learning that it is always easier to break things than it is to fix them.

Welcome to the modern world!

China and Russia already have their eyes set on stealing their mineral deposits by supporting corrupt leaders! China is already pushing construction projects on them with unfavorable loan conditions to see if something will work. However, to my knowledge, Islam does not allow for interest to be placed on a debt.

The taliban are unable to see that the problems facing Afghanistan are due solely to them and their policy of religious laws from thousands of years ago and an inability to see woman as anything other than house keepers who have no voice and who are to do as they are told, be the slaves of men.

There were no protests when the women were unsegregated, working, had uncovered faces, were leaving home alone and being fully educated. Funny that their society worked much better under those conditions.

Then in come the uneducated armed mountain people to force their views of religious life on the entire nation against its will. The developed world will provide only limited aid until the plight of women improves to accepted standards much closer to what they had over the past twenty years. The world gave that country a taste of real freedom and the Taliban snatch it away. The memory will eat at them and the world will pressure them and they will either change or end up in the stone age again, but with mobile phones, cars and WiFi.
