I had to show my birth certificate to register to vote. As part of the process they take my signature on a signature card. From that point forward when I vote I have to sign my name so my signature can be cross checked state my signature card. Nobody has been able to demonstrate this system is easily or routinely gamed. It turns out a signature is very hard to fake. Likewise if I submit a ballot by mail the signature on the ballot is cross checked against that on my signature card before the ballot may be counted. If the signatures do not match the ballot is not counted. Again, there is no evidence that this system is routinely or easily gamed. In the over ten years Colorado has used universal mail in voting they have found about six instances of fraud.

These systems and postal voting are secure. For all the noise nobody has ever been able to demonstrate any failures to report accurately nor has anyone ever been able to show an actual case of the machines either being hacked or programmed to alter the vote count. It has never happened. The very few incidents where someone attempted to submit fraudulent mail in ballots were discovered and charged, and obtw were cases of Republicans submitting more than one ballot for Republican candidates. These were mostly in a single gated community in Florida and limited to a few people.

It is likely that had the President tried to implement this the courts would have stopped it the same day before the sun set. By that time Mark Esper was gone replaced by one of Mr. Trumps poodles but I'm also pretty certain the uniformed side of the military would have refused to go along with what the JAG would tell them is a highly illegal order.
