Syrian leader Assad vows to fight on, calling U.N.-led peace talks fruitless

In a way, the Syrian (multiethnic, multireligious coalition supported by the majority of the Syrian population) government is fighting for the rights of every nation to choose a government that is hated by the American government/lobbies, and have it pursue relations and enact policies that are seen as opposed to the interests of the American government and lobbies.

He is right.  If he gives in he and his followers are signing their own death warrants.
