But for some other Britons, the event has as much relevance as the union of two distant super stars. Many will not even bother to watch the wedding despite massive media interest.

Why should they? More pressing problems with austerity and cuts in the health service, disasters like Grenfell and on a lighter note, there's a cup final on, right?

Good idea not to have Phillip do it.

A racist crack may not be suitable.

On a "bad royal day" 70% of Brits would strongly support the monarchy, especially the queen

I’m not sure about the ‘strongly’ in that sentence.

I remember Jeremy Paxman’s very funny ‘On Royalty’ and he answered the question about abolishing the monarchy in a way that summed up the general feeling well - he simply asked “Why bother?”.

I’m more of a bah humbug type and I find this kind of lavish pantomime very offensive. This celeb/Disneyland idiocy is your own choice if it’s paid for with your own hard earned money. Otherwise, it’s an insult.

What kind of a numpty gets married on Cup Final Day? I wont be watching but good luck to the happy couple, whoever they are

Her father, Thomas, pulled out of the wedding and was reported to have undergone heart surgery this week in a family drama that was played out under the glare of global media attention.

Lol, they'll never marry into an American family ever again!

What kind of a numpty gets married on Cup Final Day?

Lol, apparently Harry is a Villa fan, so no chance of a clash I guess. If you asked a royal who is playing in the cup final they'd probably say Harlequins or Saracens. My neighbours back home got married on July 30, 1966. Apparently their relationship never really recovered.

Why rain on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's nuptials, soon to be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex?

I am sure there are a number of commentators here that can remember when £50 million was a significant sum of money.

For the naysayers a few suggestions ...............

How to avoid the royal wedding this weekend.......

7 things to do instead of watching – or paying any attention at all to – the royal wedding

https://inews.co.uk/news/uk/how-to-not-watch-the-royal-wedding/

And an added bonus the local council and the men in blue have cleared all the riff raff, rough sleepers, off the streets........

As for moi, I am a huge fan, life is to short, good luck to the happy couple, and there extended families. Dysfunctional or otherwise.

Baby momma.

No uncles available to stand-in for the bride's side?

As for the heart surgery - those things come when they come. Nobody pre-plans heart surgery and timing is seldom good.

Markle's African-American mother, Doria Ragland, was due to meet the 92-year-old monarch on Friday after the yoga instructor charmed her daughter's future father-in-law when they met on Wednesday, a source close to the royal family said.

Her mother was due to take tea with Britain's Queen Elizabeth, Harry's grandmother, on the eve of the sumptuous wedding that will be watched by millions across the world............

The one thing the British are unexcelled at is irony.......

That will be a positive boost to Charlie's standing in the country, instead of the usual negativity surrounding his second wife Camilla.

I wish them both well, a handsome couple.

They'll be good news for Britain.

I don't envy any young woman who marries into the Royal Family....just thinking about the demands, expectations, lack of privacy, and the need to fulfill so much tradition is exhausting. I sincerely wish Ms. Markle well.

Jimizo

when it comes to monarchy we are both in the minor leagues any day of the week.

Scousers are born noble. We are above this lot.

Jimizo, zichi, a little objective pragmatism?

To save the monarchy …. Tony Benn

I am sure there are a number of commentators here that can remember when £50 million was a significant sum of money

I remember the days when it would be described as a fortune. I must be getting old. How do you describe 50 million quid for a wedding these days? Reasonable?

It must have been an interesting conversation between Meghan's mother and the Queen...

Millions of Brits across the country are holding street parties. Tens of thousands have been camping on the streets of Windsor for days.

And the actual homeless people? Who sleep on the streets every day? Well...

It would be churlish not to wish any couple happiness on the occasion of their marriage. I do feel sorry for Markle, though. Most of her family are vile, grubby. money grabbers who are doing their best to spoil her wedding.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

That is satire, Jimizo, the crass farce of celebrity.

Popularity or at least its notable value when associated with royalty, or nobility has a defined value. £50 million is miniscule in compassion.

Rightly or wrongly 100,000 people will throng the streets outside the castle. The live broadcasting rights to televise will generate substantial revenue. The ad breaks income is mind boggling.

And to cap it all you get to witness Posh and Becks latest fashion disasters.

So overexposed, I'm tired of hearing about this wedding.

Hi Zichi,

My Mother and Father spent some £2400 adjusted £8500 - £9000 for their wedding and reception .

My Father sold his prised MGB to contribute. Thankfully so, or I would not be contributing.

I am not for a moment attempting to justify the vast sum associated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. I am just summarizing context.

With all due respect to Mother and Father, their were never in any danger of a global media stampede to capture their nuptials for future historians to wax lyrical over.

Good idea not to have Phillip do it.

A racist crack may not be suitable.

Why not? Many Britons and especially Americans would love it. kek :)

Good luck to you BigYen, I am not a republican where the UK is concerned, primarily because of the fear or prospect of Tony Blair become Great Britain head of state.

I think, hope, probably mistakenly, naively, that Prince Harry wedding to Megham will infuse, reflect, a reality of propinquity that distinguishes genuine common romantic love in current UK society....

The ad breaks income is mind boggling.

Zero. It's on the BBC which, mercifully, has no ads.

Hi Zichi, I am wondering of the Thai Restaurant in the same location?

Economically prudent, and practical, and may a suggest intimate.

I wonder if Prince Harry and Meghan, were presented with the same £100 and a guest list of 6, who would be sitting at that same table?

Humour me for a moment, there are betting odds on whether Megan will turn up at St George’s Chapel 1000/1 for a no show, a power cut in the church 100/1 , the car breaks down 250/1.

My favourite to walk Megan down the aisle was Donald Trump 2000/1.....that is more than bonkers.....

By the way Prince Charles at 16/1.......Ho Hum, think £2000 a fortnight ago. …...

Couldn't give a monkeys for it my self, but it will be on the idiot box as her indoors will want to see it!

Weddings in the UK have become insanely expensive for no good reason. Still it keeps wedding planners employed, otherwise like estate agents they would have to be culled.

Lol, they'll never marry into an American family ever again!

Did it once before and look how that turned out!

mmwkdw It must have been an interesting conversation between Meghan's mother and the Queen...

If she can talk to Japanese Prime-ministers, African dictators, Chinese Proletarian Dictators and god help her American Presidents, it would have been a doddle!

Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle

At least they're not fully breaking with tradition. Having the groom's father walk the bride would probably raise an eyebrow or two.

CGPGrey did a video about the monarchy and how tourism and interest makes the UK money far more money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhyYgnhhKFw

If Disneyland wants to have a wedding then don't cry about it, just wish them well. How bitter do you have to be to not at least do that?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I’m more of a bah humbug type and I find this kind of lavish pantomime very offensive. This celeb/Disneyland idiocy is your own choice if it’s paid for with your own hard earned money. Otherwise, it’s an insult.

I agree, Jimizo. I'm an American and I am so SICK of hearing about this. The USA has a motormouth juvenile despot pretending to be a president and there's a lot of hatred and unrest in my country. For good measure - I'd like to see Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock reunite and 'crash the party'. VIVA SEX PISTOLS!

should Tony Blair ever become the President of a Republican UK

Why do people keep bringing up Tony Blair when the idea of a UK president comes up?

I keep hearing this. Is Blair the only alternative to the monarchy?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

At least they're not fully breaking with tradition. Having the groom's father walk the bride would probably raise an eyebrow or two.

Are people still flogging this dead horse?

The News of the World resolved this isssue years back, but didn't publish as they didn't get the result they wanted.

The Queen and Royal family love Prince Harry. The Queen has ignored Royal tradition and let Prince Harry do most of his wishes lists. However, I don't think the Queen will want to see Prince Harry and Megan have a child soon and she may advise Prince Harry to wait at least two or three years before they have children.

Lol, they'll never marry into an American family ever again!

Interesting way to put it. I thought the charge read “Marrying into the British Royal Family”. That, of course, is - to be polite- impossible.
