Modi's brand of Hindu nationalism owns a goodly part of the breakdown of the Indian health services by impeding the implementation of the proper prophylactic measures to stop the spread of Covid-19. In desperation, some Hindu devotees are now even turning to the holy cow for salvation, slathering themselves from head to toe with bucket loads of dung for protection against the invisible virus. When superstition trumps science, the "Darwin Award" awaits those who have thrown common sense to the wind.

absolutely!

well, if they are going to embrace a BS leader, might as well cover themselves in BS. Literally. Or CS in this case.

The people of India are experiencing a devastating human tragedy.

India recorded more than 4,000 COVID-19 deaths for a second straight day on Thursday, while infections stayed below 400,000 for a fourth day, though the virus has become rampant in rural areas where cases can go unreported due to a lack of testing.

This pandemic and poverty go hand in hand with congregating hundreds of thousands of migrant destitute workers, without any social safety net.

Testing and tracing the variant strain is nigh on impossible.

What is being witness here, by the global community is a full-blown human catastrophe

Seriously though, what did they expect after thousands of people went swimming during that celebration they had not too long ago? "Ganga will protect us", they said. Right.

Gee, where have I heard that before?

I would like to see the rest of the world reach out to help India in its time of need.

We have a lot of vaccine doses going unused here in the States. How about we start shipping a few million per day to other parts of the world, while we ramp up production to a much higher rate.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I hope that India can get their vaccine rollout to everyone there soon.

The situation is particularly bad in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state with a population of over 230 million. Television pictures have shown families weeping over the dead in rural hospitals or camping in wards to tend the sick.

India, like the US, chose to follow nationalist, neo-liberalism with Modi.

The death toll in India, the US, Brazil and yes Japan is the result of the priority of capitalist ,nationalist economic mechanisms.

Since when is capitalism nationalistic and neo-liberal? Care to explain your definitions?

What is with all the comments about politics being on topic above but writing about death tolls around the world related to covid and starvation off topic for?

I am stumped.

"Bhramar Mukherjee, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan, said most models had predicted a peak this week and that the country could be seeing signs of that trend."

This lady herself estimated that more than one million Indians are dead due to COVID but not part of statistics due to massive undercounting.

The India government is running her "Herd Immunization of Covid", Vaccination the entire 1.4 billion population is just unfeasible! I think they have give up the bodies counting!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

So has this jumped to 11000 now suddenly, or not? The article does not tell us. Without that information, the article is meaningless

Did you miss this bit ?

"Bodies have washed up in the Ganges, the river that flows through the state, as crematoriums are overwhelmed and wood for funeral pyres is in short supply"

Doesn't sound like biz as usual does it ?

More than 4,000 Indians die of COVID-19 for second straight day

....which is a meaningless number unless we know how many Indians die in a normal day.

4000 Indians die of COVID-19 for a second straight day.

vs

4000 Indians die for a second straight day.

Which bit of the 'of COVID-19' is difficult to comprehend?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

China proves you wrong.

where’s the proof !?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Uhh, you must be counting wrong.

The Indian death rate is 7.3 or so, that means 7.3 people out of 1000 die each year.

Now, the population of India is close to 1.4 billion, so a simple calculation should give you 28,000 deaths daily, on a normal year. Not 7000 as someone here claimed. Death rate does not translate directly like that.

Assuming all 4000 really died of Covid, that is a significant increase, but not catastrophic.

Moreover, official Indian statistics give a number of around 250,000 covid deaths to date. How truthful the number is I cannot say, but please keep in mind that those numbers are all we have to work with. Anything else has no basis of proof and is just speculation. So, on the basis of the above numbers, the death rate in India has risen by 2% (of total yearly deaths pre-covid), which while regrettable, is far from catastrophic.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The question was: How many died that day in total? The expected average is about 7000. So plus 4000 Covid deaths we should expect a figure of 12000. Do we have that? Please show us where. What part of "normal daily death rate" is difficult to comprehend?

What's your angle here? Are you hoping that 4000 daily covid deaths can be offset by something else? What is 'meaningless' about 4000 people dying from a single cause?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China has proved wrong what? I don’t believe that they have vaccinated the whole population or reached herd immunity or that the whole population ever has immunity with those 54% efficacy ‘placebo’ vaccines. The difference is, they exactly know what they have set free and therefore know some more antidote possibilities than we do and they have those infamous strict repressive measures to close anything down quickly whenever a new small infection cluster has developed and significantly shows up again.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

The normal daily death rate in India is around 7300, see here:

https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/IND/india/death-rate

So has this jumped to 11000 now suddenly, or not? The article does not tell us. Without that information, the article is meaningless.

@Zoroto: China proves you wrong

Sir! Thanks for your opinion but I want to tell you: India is not China! & China is not India! They were very different country! The effectiveness and willingness were different!

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

There is probably too little interest in vaccination.

So for 14 days they show us corpses and horrors from India and then announce that the “apocalyptic” Indian strain has spread globally.

Go to hell!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Daily and Active cases have started falling and now the focus shifts to deaths..macbre hate styled fear mongering reporting at its best.

That has been an issue in India forever. Go to Wayback machine and find countless articles.

Bodies have washed up in the Ganges, the river that flows through the state, as crematoriums are overwhelmed and wood for funeral pyres is in short supply..

May want to lookup that first statement..as that was a fake photoshop..wood for funeral pyres in short supply, what?? and what about all the burials... guess there is no land for burials to... these 100% fake statements are simply mind boggling.

That is ia dramatic picture, however it does not give a number. Without which it is just an appeal to emotion.

By the way, the floating bodies in the Ganges have been an issue for years and years, seeing that everybody wants to end in that river and the cremations are often incomplete. You did not know that?

The standard Modi haters and the standard narrative... posting similar comments again and again..at-least post something factual and believable. So only Santana Dharma (Hindu's) are afftected by COVID, Muslims,Christians and other religions apparently have not been affected, lovely.. keep on hating...

@Zaphad:

In agreement. Thank you for your logical posts.

100% fake news... that state is managing the pandemic much better than many other Indian states, anyone interested could look-up the state wise data in the below link, click on State Data.
