Didn't the GOP/NRA push laws that banned doctors from asking patients if there is a gun in the house?

Didn't the GOP/NRA strip gun research funding from the Centers for Disease Control when they started talking about it as a public health concern?

Didn't the GOP/NRA push to remove laws that made it more difficult for mentally ill people to get guns?

Hasn't the GOP/NRA blamed mental illness for years without spending a single second on mental illness legislation?

I guess you'll have to excuse me if I wait and see what they do instead of what they say. Mostly this has been a talking point used until the story drops from the headlines

@bas4fliberals and Europeans seems to love to paint a broad brush,

All liberals and all Europeans? Mighty broad brush you're using. Even if you're saying all liberals and all Europeans love to paint broad brushes.

That's right Donny Boy, just ignore the millions of AK-style assault rifles out there floating around. Blame everything on the mentally ill, but a lot of these white people involved in these mass shootings didn't register on the crazy scale anyway, so building more mental institutions wouldn't have done any good to stop these mass shootings.

"We can't let these people be on the streets."

Lip service at best. The right's hero Ronald Reagan was the first president to lead spending cuts for treatment of mental illness, which resulted in putting many people with mental illness on the streets. Where many remain today, even though after every mass murder the right have claimed something needs to be done about mental health issues.

Fat chance either Trump or McConnell will propose legislation authorizing greater spending for much other than defense - and pork projects for their biggest campaign contributors.

Even fatter chance either will do anything to upset the NRA. Both are politicians who know many in their base see gun ownership as the most important issue.

For background checks alone to have any impact would require thousands of blade runners with Rick Deckard-like abilities to sense who's 'mentally unstable'. And Deckard was an imaginary character created by a man who was mentally ill. (No disrespect for Phillip K. Dick)

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he supports meaningful background checks for gun buyers, but he told reporters that those responsible for recent mass shootings were mentally ill and the United States should build more mental institutions.

Mental Institutions? Well we already have two; Trump Tower and Mar-A-Lago....

"We don't want crazy people owning guns," the president added.

You just described your entire base Donnie...and I fully agree with you...

insane people, dangerous people, really bad people

crazy people

mentally deranged and dangerous people

Yeah, no one puts down Americans like an American.

If you don't like all the crazy people in the country, Donny, you could always go back to where you came from, instead of hating America like that.

Or can you explain why America seems to have so many more mentally deranged and dangerous people than any other developed nation on the planet?

Is it something in the water? In the food? In society as a whole? You're going to fix that by locking some people up in institutions? When a significant proportion of the population is crazy enough to think that having the country awash with guns is not only a Good Thing but a Gawd Gibbon Raht, who decides who gets locked away? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

It's them. They pull the trigger. The gun doesn't pull the trigger. They pull the trigger.

Too many triggers around waiting to be pulled. The answer's easy - get rid of all the triggers.

Seriously, Better gun control/regulations so "mentally ill" people can't get firearms in the first place. But nope, lets just build mental institutions instead. This man should be placed in one himself.

This is like when the Republicans cut funding for defense of embassies, then freaked out when their embassy got attacked, and tried to blame it on Hillary.

The moron crew creates a problem, then when the problem gets exposed, they claim the blame is on anything and anyone other than themselves.

The party of responsibility my a$$.

I would tend to disagree, I met a lot of disturbed people in Europe, granted they don’t don’t have access to a lot of guns, but crazy is crazy, it covers all races, nationalities, religions, ethnic groups.

Disturbed people everywhere.

Why do these people tend to go on mass killing sprees with assault weapons more often in the US?

Yeah, treating mental health can prevent a lot of trouble, including shootings.

If it could only treat that most dreaded disease, Trump Reverence Syndrome, started in Moscow...

It is a good start instead of blaming video games or the shooter’s political affiliation.

A good start would be recognizing guns as the cause of gun crimes. I mean, how simple is that?

By definition, anyone one shooting at another human outside war is mentally ill, unless they are protecting someone else or themselves.

Sorry, you don't just get to define mental illness so easily. A contract killer is perfectly sane, but just lacks the moral feelings that hold the rest of us back.

You might argue that not having this sense of morality is a symptom of insanity, but I would suggest that is nothing more than an extension of the no true Scotsman logical fallacy.

Another could argue, just as reasonably, that religious faith is a sign of insanity, because it requires belief in something you can't see [please leave this point moderator], but few do.

You can't pick and choose insanity to fit your world view.

But interestingly when a man commits a racially driven atrocity, the President will claim that it is driven by mental illness, but when it is inspired by religion, it is terrorism, not insanity.

Doctor: "So do you want to own lots of guns and kill lots of people?"

Patient: "Er, no"

Doctor: "Next!"

Mental health professionals don't want to report their patients to a national DB. Should everyone seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist be placed on a NO FIREARM DB?

I'm in favor of "Red Flag" laws if someone is really upset and might harm anyone else. I don't know from where the funding for the extra police will come. Law enforcement is already overworked and won't have a place to hold the firearms for 90 days to see if the person calms down.

The NRA only has a few million members. There are somewhere around 100M people who own firearms in the USA, including a bunch of new owners in El Paso. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/aug/05/el-paso-gun-sales-hispanic-americans-rush-to-buy-weapons

If you don't like all the crazy people in the country, Donny, you could always go back to where

But he was born in NY ans is the President, so why should he go?

It would definitely help out.

I don’t know about all that garbage, but literally everyone in my neighborhood owns a firearm , no one is deranged or mentally ill, liberals and Europeans seems to love to paint a broad brush, but nonetheless, it is amusing hear all these misunderstandings. Lol

Too many triggers around waiting to be pulled. The answer's easy - get rid of all the triggers.

Nope! I love to hunt and will continue to do so until my last breath. That’s why I love living in the countryside.
