U.S. breaks daily record for coronavirus cases with over 84,000 new infections

The United States broke its daily record for new coronavirus infections on Friday as it reported 84,218 new cases due to outbreaks in virtually every part of the country, according to a Reuters tally.

The spike in cases comes less than two weeks before the presidential election on Nov 3 and is hitting battleground states such as Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. On Thursday, the United States reported a near-record 76,195 new cases.

The previous record was 77,299 new cases on July 16. At the time, hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients hit 47,000 and two weeks later deaths rose to an average of 1,200 per day.

Now, hospitalizations are over 41,000 and deaths average nearly 800 per day. Sixteen states had record one-day increases in new cases on Friday and 11 reported a record number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Health experts have not pinpointed the reason for the rise but have long warned that colder temperatures driving people inside, fatigue with COVID-19 precautions and students returning to schools and colleges, could promote the spread of the virus.

The United States has the most cases in the world at 8.5 million and the most fatalities with 224,000 lives lost. The United States has reported over the past week an average of 60,000 new cases per day, the highest seven-day average since early August.

The Midwest has been the epicenter of the latest surge but infections are rising nationwide.

The Northeast reported an 83% increase in cases in the past month. New cases have doubled in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and New Jersey in the past four weeks as compared to the prior four weeks, according to a Reuters analysis.

Western states including Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming have reported a 200% increase in cases in the past four weeks when compared with the previous four weeks.

The Trump Administration smashing more records. Who’s tired of winning yet?

Trump stated in the debate about the Covid-19, "We have turned the corner". Missed to add and "run into a 20 ton truck".

Zichi

You got that right. We're rounding the corner' right into oncoming traffic.

Or..maybe Trump keeps saying we're rounding the coroner...?

Just remember, it wasn't a hoax that will like a miracle go away with the warm weather. Trump knew it wasn't. Trump lied, and 130,00 Americans (and counting) needlessly dies. Yep. Thats the newest figure.

130,000 thousand people, Dead. 'Cause Trump lied. Republicans lied.

And people died.

They won't wear masks. They won't distance. They won't wash their hands. The won't contact trace.

There is only one thing to do.

Throw the bums out. All of them.

VOTE. AND VOTE DEMOCRAT!

Infections, infections. Meanwhile, the death rate remains flat. The media-created panic is pure politics.

Yes, because we know an infection is only serious if it causes death. We don’t need to worry because there are no other possible complications from an infection beyond death. Makes perfect sense.

Hmmmmm.....

The number of coronavirus deaths reported in the United States on Wednesday reached its highest in two months, offering more evidence that the pandemic was gaining fresh momentum across the country as cooler weather sets in.

Trump’s bioterror get-togethers surely aren’t helping here.

15 ( +16 / -1 )

That photo is a classic. I imagine that’s the same look he’ll have on his face when the cuffs come out.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Agree,,,,perfect match of photo and headline. What a moron. And what morons cheering him on. In just short of 4 years not only did he fail to MAGA, he's broken it. The next several administrations will have to struggle to repair what he has done to the country.

Zaphod,

so, 800 deaths a day is nothing?

C'mon, face the fact, that's 800 too many!

And please don't blame it on the democrats .... this is Trump's and his administration's fault!

But guess the States as well as the rest of the world have to put up with this clown for another roughly 2 weeks!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Trump blamed the "Biden lockdown" forgetting the he won't be president until next month?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Me thunks that Trump wasnt even infected in the first place.....just another lie by a compulsive liar......

We're going to be winning so much you're going to get sick of winning!

Me thunks that Trump wasnt even infected in the first place.....just another lie by a compulsive liar......

That had crossed my mind. Think of the worst thing a human can do, and don't ever think Trump is not capable of doing it.

Americans die, Trump dances.

It's over! (you can't fool all the people all of the time)

What a picture - Donald Trump, in an arena full of so-called evangelicals and religious conservatives, boogying down to the tune YMCA by the all gay group Village People....

The utter ridiculousness of Trump-world....

That light at the end of the tunnel is the Covid freight train heading into the winter.

What happens the day after a Biden win? Does Trump get arrested by every state AG? Do they take turns? Does the Mueller report kick in since he said Trump could be charged if he wasn't in office? How about headhunters for his $400 million in defaulted loans? Do civil cases occur for compensation for all the dead?

He wanted to be a reality tv star, he'll have a second act for his own trials.

The fact that this is still a close race, and so many vote and think Republican just defies all common sense. Turns out USA was really stupid full of people who know the cost of everything but the price of nothing.

It'll be a wonder if USA can turn it around from these self inflicted disasters. These issues of right wing radicalism were present for decades and Trump merely set them loose. The rot was already there

Generally when a patient is ill there's a notion that they want to get well.

I don't see that here. Advanced nations reduced their religiosity, only USA increased it. Kuch brothers funded misinformation tv stations, camps, and people for decades. Now they reap what has been sown.

USA tears itself from within by the notion that a dollar matters more than human life.

That entire notion has to change if change is to occur.

Trump's response will probably be that over 200,000 new infections would have taken place if it weren't for his brilliant leadership.

While not wearing a mask.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

In almost every place he’s held a rally, the infection rate has gone up dramatically post-rally compared to before he came to town.

He is truly the Super-Spreader-in-Chief.

He’s Coviod Donald, probably responsable for more person to person transmissions than any other individual on the planet.

Depends what you compare it with. Out of the blue, the number means nothing. As I said, looking at the statistics, the death rate remains flat.

And please don't blame it on the democrats .... this is Trump's and his administration's fault!

But guess the States as well as the rest of the world have to put up with this clown for another roughly 2 weeks!

I have always argued against drawing a simplistic straight line between Corona results and politics. But if you must, please notice that as before, the handful of states with astronomic Corona deaths (which pull up the entire Corona average number) are all Democrat run. This latest blip in low-death rate states that the media is now salivating over is statistically irrelevant.

The Mueller report only kicks in in the sense that Mueller made explicitly clear in his otherwise muted and hesitant appearance before Congress: anyone in doubt that Trump could be charged with criminal obstruction - like any other schmo - when he leaves office should be disabused by what Mueller stated. It was one of the few simple "yes" answers in his testimony:

However.

The question really will come down to whether Trump would be charged. In legal matters, America tends to be kind to its ex-presidents and not trouble them with their little indiscretions after they leave. Trump may be given the same respectful treatment, despite having easily cleared the bar for obstruction of justice while in office. It is somewhat doubtful that he will actually be pursued for this later on, or for anything else he has done as president.

Potentially, criminal acts committed while president - tax and personal enrichment come to mind - might be far more of a legal headache. He's obviously a criminal and a scam artist, but I'll believe it when it happens. The best people can really expect at this point is that he is ejected by the electorate, a one-term humiliation that he as more than earned.

It is amazing to see the view from inside the bubble. If all their friends are in the same bubble and all they watch is the homogenized corporate media, people seriously do not realize that there is a whole universe outside the bubble. I suppose you do not even know who Tony Bobulinski is? Outside the bubble, it is huge issue, inside the bubble he gets the Voldemort treatment.

This looks so much like 2016, even if Big Tech and the media are putting both thumbs and then some on the scale.

Zaphod

don't assume to know what I know. I'm not in any bubble nor do I watch any "homogenized corporate media". The FBI have had the HDD for nearly a year and no charges to date.

I think you agree Trump has a 13% chance of reelection.

There could be 500,000 deaths by February according to one university.

What tune was he 'dancing' to this time? YMCA or Macho Man? Next time, I would suggest Gloria Gaynor's disco version of I Am What I Am. They could even change the title to It Is What It Is.
