Chaos grips Senate hearing on Trump Supreme Court pick Kavanaugh

By Lawrence Hurley

Chaos engulfed the U.S. Senate confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's Supreme Court pick, as Democrats on Tuesday complained bitterly about Republicans withholding documents about the nominee's past White House service and shouting protesters were arrested in droves.

More than seven hours went by during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing before Kavanaugh, the conservative federal appeals court judge Trump selected for a lifetime job on the top U.S. judicial body, got to deliver his opening statement.

Kavanaugh, nominated by a president who has often criticized the federal judiciary, told the senators that "a judge must be independent, not swayed by public pressure. Our independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic."

With Democratic senators repeatedly interrupting the committee's Republican chairman Chuck Grassley at the outset of the hearing, the session quickly became a ruckus. U.S. Capitol police said 61 protesters were removed from the room and charged with disorderly conduct, along with nine more outside the hearing.

Democrats decried the withholding of the documents and sought to have the proceedings adjourned, as Grassley struggled to maintain order.

"This is the first confirmation for a Supreme Court justice I've seen, basically, according to mob rule," Republican Senator John Cornyn said, a characterization Democrats rejected.

"What we've heard is the noise of democracy," Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said.

Protesters, mostly women, took turns yelling as senators spoke, shouting, "This is a travesty of justice," "Our democracy is broken" and "Vote no on Kavanaugh." Demonstrators voiced concern about what they saw as the threat posed by Kavanaugh to abortion rights, healthcare access and gun control.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker appealed to Grassley's "sense of decency and integrity" and said the withholding of the documents by Republicans and the White House left lawmakers unable to properly vet Kavanaugh.

"We cannot possibly move forward. We have not had an opportunity to have a meaningful hearing," Democratic Senator Kamala Harris said.

Grassley deemed the Democrats' request to halt the hearing"out of order" and accused them of obstruction. Republicans hold a slim Senate majority and can confirm Kavanaugh if they stay united. There were no signs of Republican defections.

Trump blasted the Democrats on Twitter, saying the hearing was "truly a display of how mean, angry and despicable the other side is" and accusing them of "looking to inflict pain and embarrassment" on Kavanaugh.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh, 53, is expected to move the court - which already had a conservative majority - further to the right. Senate Democratic leaders have vowed a fierce fight to try to block his confirmation. Democrats signaled they would press Kavanaugh on abortion, gun rights and presidential power when they get to question him starting on Wednesday in a hearing due to run through Friday.

Democrats have demanded in vain to see documents relating Kavanaugh's time as staff secretary to Republican former President George W. Bush from 2003 to 2006. That job involved managing paper flow from advisers to Bush. Republicans also have released some, but not all, documents concerning Kavanaugh's two prior years as a lawyer in Bush's White House Counsel's Office.

Republicans have said Democrats have more than enough documents to assess Kavanaugh's record, including his 12 years of judicial opinions as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Kavanaugh sat, fingers intertwined, quietly staring ahead at committee members as protesters in the audience screamed while being dragged out of the room. He occasionally jotted notes on paper.

When he finally got to speak, Kavanaugh called the Supreme Court "the last line of defense for the separation of powers (in the U.S. government), and the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution."

"The Supreme Court must never be viewed as a partisan institution," added Kavanaugh, who also paid tribute to his family and the justice he is nominated to replace, the retiring Anthony Kennedy.

Republican Orrin Hatch accused Democratic senators of political opportunism, noting, "We have folks who want to run for president," though he did not mention any by name. There has been speculation Booker and Harris might consider 2020 presidential runs.

Hatch grew visibly irritated as protesters interrupted him.

"I think we ought to have this loudmouth removed," Hatch said.

As the hearing paused for a lunch break, Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter who was killed in the Parkland, Florida high school mass shooting in February, tried to talk to Kavanaugh but the nominee turned away. Video of the encounter was shared widely on social media.

"I guess he did not want to deal with the reality of gun violence," Guttenberg wrote on Twitter afterward.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said security intervened before Kavanaugh could shake Guttenberg's hand.

The Democratic frustrations that boiled over on Tuesday had been simmering for more than two years. Democrats have accused Senate Republican leaders of stealing a Supreme Court seat by refusing to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee to the high court Merrick Garland in 2016, allowing Trump to fill a Supreme Court vacancy instead.

Republicans also last year reduced the margin for advancing Supreme Court nominations from 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate to a simple majority in order to force through the confirmation of Trump's first high court nominee Neil Gorsuch.

The Senate is likely to vote on confirmation by the end of September. The court begins its next term in October.

The hearing gave Democrats a platform to make their case against Kavanaugh ahead of November's congressional elections in which they are seeking to seize control of Congress from Republicans.

Liberals are concerned Kavanaugh could provide a decisive fifth vote on the nine-justice court to overturn or weaken the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion nationwide.

Kavanaugh is likely to be questioned about his views on investigating sitting presidents and Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

@blackla Political circus. Proof that these resisters will attack anyone and anything with no shame.

The divider-in-chief is being successful at dividing and conquering, a tactic used by despots since despots first began despoting (sic).

Trump's making a last ditch effort to keep power and control within his hands and in the hands of the .01% that he's serving while hoping the declining demographic that constitutes his base will provide continued support for him.

Fortunately the US still has elections. Hopefully it's not too late to replace the shambles Trump's leaving behind and the separation and balance of powers can once again be firmly reinstated.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

If he wants to prove his impartiality, he'd request his hearing be postponed until the Democrats get to analyze every document that was dumped on them last night and receive everything they asked for.

Doesn't he see he's being jammed onto the Court for a reason?

The Republicans made this bed when they refused to consider Obama’s pic. Sucks lying in that bed you made don’t it.

Dems attempting to shut down the functioning of the Senate because they lost the election. The American Left has become dependent upon the courts to achieve their ideological goals. They are behaving as if they cannot accomplish anything now that they cannot have dominance of the Supreme Court - especially in their all important social justice agenda.

The US Constitution does not speak on obscure issues such as homosexual or transgender rights. There are no penumbras that cover that. So instead of amending the Constitution or fighting it out in the States they go to their stacked courts. Being the dictatorial folks that they are, the Left insists that their values be imposed upon everyone else. Thus the potential of a 5th solid conservative has the far Left lashing out and undermining America’s democracy. You see this in the #resistance, the attempts to falsely blame Trump for collusion, and Muellers indifference to Hillary’s Russian connections and campaign finance violations. Sad.

Doesn't he see he's being jammed onto the Court for a reason?

It really sucked when Obama jammed Obamacare through the Senate and normalized illegal immigration and hatred against the police. It made me angry that Republicans just sat there and took it without making a fuss in Congress. Obama got his $10 trillion in debt with hardly a peep.

Harry Reid got rid of the judicial filibuster and stacked the DC circuit court to protect Obamacare. Republicans warned him that his decision would come back and bite the Dems. Well, they asked for and now they are getting it. Now all they have to complain about is that instead of getting more documents on Kavanaugh than the last four nominees, they need more than the last ten.

To quote one ex-president, “Elections have consequences”.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Dems attempting to shut down the functioning of the Senate because they lost the election.

But whaddabout the pubs who did that during the Obama administration?

You guys really don't like sleeping in that bed you made, do you.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

You guys really don't like sleeping in that bed you made, do you.

Republicans provided bipartisan support for Obama’s far Left justices. That has been the tradition of the Senate even after Bork. Now there will be another conservative supreme court justice. Conservatives will happily lie in that bed. Now just imagine if one of either Ginsburg or Breyer leaves the bench sometime over the next two years. The #resistance will go further over the edge and the lives of Republican baseball team members will again be in danger.

Obama and the Democrats in Congress spiked the ball repeatedly when they pushed through their far Left Supreme Court justices, when they jammed Obamacare through the Senate, and even when Obama unilaterally legalized illegal immigrants even after he stating multiple times that he did not have the power to do so. So I imagine Conservatives will enjoy their court victories - especially after Harry Reid gave them the tools to pull them off.

What comes around goes around. Democrats will have their chance to advance their political goals again in the near future. I am not even convinced that Kavanaugh isn’t another Progressive in sheeps clothing. I would have preferred a solid conservative to balance out Ginsburg and Sotomayor’s extremist judicial philosophies. I would love at least one more conservative justice to force Progressives to follow the Constitution. Come on Ginsburg, retire to your bingo games at the retirement home. You deserve it.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

The Republicans made this bed when they refused to consider Obama’s pic. Sucks lying in that bed you made don’t it.

Why on earth would the GOP EVER vote on a no nominee that is not a sound conservative? Garland wasn’t. Reverse the roles, if they GOP put up for the Democrats and a Democrat President Kavanaugh and recommend him, the Dems wouldn’t even give him a second look. Garland would have been another Roberts, never going to fall for that again.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Republicans provided bipartisan support for Obama’s far Left justices.

The Republicans wouldn't even debate Obama's supreme court pick much less provide support.

Sorry, let's keep this to reality mmkay?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

What comes around goes around.

Exactly, and the Republicans are going crazy, dealing with all the tactics they employed for eight years of Obama.

What goes around comes around.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Kavanaugh belongs on Trump's campaign, not the Supreme Court.

I watched the hearing and you had to see and hear Ted Cruz as he gushed on and on about the virtues of Trump. This after what Trump had to say about Cruz's wife and father? It was disgusting.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Why on earth would the GOP EVER vote on a no nominee that is not a sound conservative?

Go back and ask all the GOP candidates who did in the past.

You guys seem to think it's always been hyper-partisan. It wasn't until you guys made it that way. So don't expect us to feel bad for you when you whine about how it is. If don't want it that way, then you need to repent for making it that way.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Nah actually it’s nice and comfy. Cause our pick is gettting confirmed. For life. Elections have consequences a man once said.

Sucks lying in that bed you made don’t i

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

You guys seem to think it's always been hyper-partisan.

Since Bork it has been.

It wasn't until you guys made it that way.

No, it wasn’t until that idiot Ted Kennedy made the slanderous accusation that Bork would force women into back ally abortions. Back then the GOP were on point when they were hit with legal questions, but once the Democrats devolved into political gutter sniping they weren’t prepared and that is what killed Bork, fast forward today and after another witch hunt with Thomas which was so overwhelming partisan and as he said, it was a political lynching, now the GOP have evolved and learned from the previous mistakes and now know how to play the political grandstanding games these people try to politicize and play. Grassley was excellent in making sure he had his notes and rebuttals ready to punt these nut jobs and shut that bleep down.

So don't expect us to feel bad for you when you whine about how it is. If don't want it that way, then you need to repent for making it that way.

I personally could give a flower what the liberals/progressives think, really. I’m just going to continue to watch the spectacle and the left get angrier and object, laugh my butt off and watch Kavanaugh give his rebuttal and put these loons to shame and then watch him get confirmed and like a cherry to top it off, watch the Democrats and idiots like Blumenthal heads explode as their liberal standings will come to a final close for at least the next 40 years. Let the fun begin.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Exactly, and the Republicans are going crazy, dealing with all the tactics they employed for eight years of Obama.

I can't remember a single incident when right wing demonstrators disrupted a senate hearing by yelling and screaming until they got arrested. Maybe the repubs weren't paying enough.

Or maybe since they’re not as smart as liberals they had decent parents that taught them, ethics and that patience matters, ballad boxes screaming, fighting and yelling makes you look like a total idiot and solves nothing.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

screaming, fighting and yelling makes you look like a total idiot and solves nothing.

Cool, could you tell this to the President?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Cool, could you tell this to the President?

No, he’s the President and should yell at these stupid Democrats, but it doesn’t matter, Kavanaugh will be confirmed, the Dems need to sit back and take it all in.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Kavanaugh will be confirmed

Almost definitely.

the Dems need to sit back and take it all in.

No, they need to do what they are doing, and make every step of the process as painful and a pain in the ass as possible. Use the Republican tactics against them.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

I see, so shouting and screaming makes you look stupid... but the President should scream and shout. So you think the President should make himself look stupid. Well, I mean, he has been doing just that for many a year now, so... okay.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

but it doesn’t matter, Kavanaugh will be confirmed, the Dems need to sit back and take it all in. yes probably but well see if Trump has the nads to take on gay rights and abortion, the tsunami of blue thatll wash over him come next election will make his orange tan turn white, maybe that not a bad thing for Trump

"as Democrats on Tuesday complained bitterly about Republicans withholding documents about the nominee's past White House service"

Don't they have like a half million documents on this guy that they haven't read yet? lol

Make bigger fools of themselves? Hey, I ain’t got a problem with that.

,and make every step of the process as painful and a pain in the ass as possible. Use the Republican tactics against them.

It’s not painful, as Grassley and Hatch said, it’s more funny actually, I tend to agree. Typical liberals doing the same typical lame tactics and trying to fight the inevitable. Once He’s confirmed, we can finally, finally get the country on the right track. Oh, Ruuuth, don’t you feel a bit tired?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

He will help crush unions which will help push down wages on the working class.

I'm all for it.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Don't they have like a half million documents on this guy that they haven't read yet? lol

No they want too see all the documents on the guy not just the ones that the Republicans want them to see. Its called transparency, without it you just keep making that swamp bigger. But you know if Trump cant do it how do you expect the Trumpanzees to do the same.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

No they want too see all the documents on the guy not just the ones that the Republicans want them to see. Its called transparency, without it you just keep making that swamp bigger. But you know if Trump cant do it how do you expect the Trumpanzees to do the same.

Typical liberal hypocrisy at its best, Republicans ask for documents from the Democrats No, you’re not getting them or we will just redact them, when the Democrats ask Republicans for documents and don’t get them, they go into a rage, you must be hiding something, we demand them, just shut up and give us what we want, now! Lol

welcome to my world, suck it up, if we have to be patient, so do you.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Can you name an event in the last four years where have Republicans asked for documentation Democratic Party members where the latter provided only 10% of what was requested?

Please note that neither I nor members of this board will accept "What?", "I already did" or any variation of "LOL" as an answer.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

You guys seem to think it's always been hyper-partisan. It wasn't until you guys made it that way.

Nah - it started when the Dems went after Bork. Since that ‘victory’ the Dems have been playing the same foul game. It’s about time Republicans fought back. I loved seeing McConnell stiff arm Obama by denying Garland a seat on the Supreme Court. It was a beautiful thing to see. It sort of makes up for Bork and the crap Biden and Kennedy put Clarence Thomas through. The Left has been waging scorched earth warfare on Republican nominated judges since the 1980’s. And why not, it produced squishy moderates like Justices Kennedy and O’Connor and an outright Liberal in Souter. It took the idiot Republicans 40 years to learn to fight back.

I don’t think Kavanaugh is at all as conservative as Ginsburg or Sotomayor are Progressive, but I do love seeing the rage from the Left during the hearings. Every time a loony Dem protestor begins screeching about the end of the world Kavanaugh ignores them and keeps on answering questions. In 2 to 6 years the Dems will regain power; I’ll just have to enjoy seeing the Left lose a lot more Supreme Court cases in the meantime.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

He will help crush unions which will help push down wages on the working class.

Nah - illegal immigration and one sided trade deals depressed wages. Supply and demand. Flood the market with labor and wages stagnant. Such arcane economic concepts are somehow beyond the comprehension of your average Lefty.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@bass: Oh, Ruuuth, don’t you feel a bit tired?

Just one more Bass and it’s game over for the Socialist takeover of America - at least for the next two generations or so. I wish no ill will on Ginsburg or Breyer so I will just say I hope that one of them will decide it’s time to go out to pasteur and enjoy their remaining time with their great grandchildren. Can you imagine what the Left might do if Trump or another upstart Republican were to win in 2020? The meltdown would be epic.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

This is democracy in action, functioning at high performance. It may not be the best but it is the best of what is available.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Typical liberal hypocrisy at its best,

both sides are guilty of it unless there is more transparency nothing will change, one sides opaqueness doenst justify the other to do the same, just breeds more corruption.

Of all the POTUS nobody has been more opaque than Trump, except maybe Nixon

Dems strategic political bureaucracy was on full display during the confirmation hearing in the Senate. I've watched the whole thing and there was a moment where a man surprisingly approached Kavanaugh to try to shake his hand during one of the event's break time.

See NBC News coverage...

https://youtu.be/HTQbYKOhYf4

After watching this clip, it's clear that Kavanaugh was not expecting this and was totally thrown off by this moment. Judging from his facial expression and reaction he was confused and totally got blindsided by this situation.

This look like a manipulated moment and flawlessly staged antic.

The man who approached Kavanaugh is Fred Guttenberg. This man is a father from Parkland High School. There was a shooting incident in that school sometime back in February of this year. He is gun control advocate and a Dem supporter. Kavanaugh like most people in the US has no clue who this person is trying to grab him.

Well let's dig a little deeper for some factual evidence and see how this event was actually perfectly choreographed to create chaos...

2 days ago Mr. Guttenberg had revealing cryptic message on Twitter the had a "role to play" at the upcoming Kavaunaugh's confirmation. This a verifiable proof of his admission.

Twitter link:

https://twitter.com/fred_guttenberg/status/1036600460726161408

Twitter image:

https://images2.imgbox.com/4d/91/cj77R51d_o.jpg

Then the connection happens here. Senator Feinstein says on her Twitter that wanted Guttenberg to participate in the carefully directed moment. Her invitation to this man is an evidence of Feinstein's admission.

Twitter link:

https://twitter.com/SenFeinstein/status/1037100661849108480

Twitter image:

https://images2.imgbox.com/bd/a3/UtjmYeDc_o.jpg

Now fast forward to the actual event. Senator Feinstein tweet in publicly but for some reason did not take any chance at all to introduce Kavanaugh to Fred Guttenberg at the time of her earlier meetings with the nominee. Why would she not do this, this is the most professionally formal thing to do in this circumstance. Well, well, unless she an ulterior motive not to. What else? Additionally Feinstein didn't even take the time to introduce Mr. Guttenberg to Jugdge Kavanaugh during her remarks. She cannot make a petty excuse that she accidentally forgot after all that recent public announcement on tweets by both of them.

It's clear as blue sky that this is evidently a fabricated occasion prearranged to seize an optic for story-like distribution.

This MSM image where they said that Guttenberg was trying to have a friendly handshake to Kavanaugh. But the nominee judge look like he is walking away instead.

Picture is worth thousand words or something along that line...

https://images2.imgbox.com/60/9b/l3OcpzEM_o.jpg

That picture (link above) is what exact result of the moment what the narrative engineers desired. Clearly without a doubt that it's propaganda fabrication at its perfection when executed flawlessly. Just look at Kavanaugh's face on the pic, that's priceless. A perfect one of many examples Dems political propaganda weapon at their disposal for dispatching purposes and then distributing it to their ideological fanatics.

I call this the evolution of the modern Dems. The energy and time spent they are willing to flavor it to their not so genuine constructs resulting in the perception of deceit, manipulation and disinformation. Amazing amount of spending of their time thinking and planning all of this just to deceive the public. I could only imagine what other potential malice capabilities they would execute if they were in power today.

Then again this is just a small taste compare to how much effort was generated into creating the vast Russian scheme. Scary how logic is thrown out of the windows for these guys but instead they walk down the path of being extremely volatile intellectually and emotionally.

Check the news headline out as a proof to see how coordinated this was with the MSM the moment this happened...

Kavanaugh swearing in transformed to pathetic show by Dems. It's amazing that this kind of behavior the Dems are showing is tolerated without them going to jail for disturbing the peace. Hopeful for blue wave this upcoming midterms decreased significantly after this debacle. As well as after McCain's funeral and this pathetic show they have ruined their hopes with everyone other than those who have a direct motive to re-cycle old criminals who can't even behave well enough to not get kicked off a school bus while in positions that should demand the highest professionalism. PATHETIC.

Everyone behaves well while they get what they want. True colors show when people don't get what they want. It is perfectly clear the Dems are not getting what they want, and that they are an absolute pestilence that wanted the complete annihilation of the United States. I 100 percent believe the Democrats that are now protesting Kavanaugh are in fact Kruschev planted operatives that are relics of the old soviet effort to destroy the United States. Add to this list anyone who attended McCain's funeral and bashed Trump, including McCain himself.

It is obvious a major operation to destroy the United States is under threat, and the people conducting it were selected for the job because they are absolute slime. The more they scream, the happier REAL Americans ought to be in the 1970's former secretary of agriculture Ezra Taft Benson penned a book titled "An Enemy Hath Done THIS". In this book, he had a chapter which outlined what the Russians did to infiltrate the key positions of power in the United States. In Russia, exact duplicates of small cities in America were constructed (three in all). All the streets were the same, the stores were the same, EVERYTHING was copied right down to the last detail.

One of these cities was Racine Wisconsin. People in Russia were raised from children in these cities, built to perfection on Russian soil. They spoke American English and attended American styled schools, but all of them knew their end job was to go to the United States, infiltrate, and destroy the nation, having perfect reference and memories of an "American" home town. I am confident many of the congress critters that are now behaving the way they are, and MANY MANY college professors were part of this Russian program, and they are still doing their jobs. Don't for a minute think Russia is actually dead, the actions of these people prove there is still something seriously amiss with Russia. And no one is paying attention to it, because after all the old Communist order is "dead".

The type of behavior we are seeing in Congress, and the type of professors now teaching American students strongly supports the notion that a clandestine (foreign) nationally supported program is still running in the United States, for the sole purpose of destroying the country. One thing is certain - the three cities really did exist, and the people trained in them are still in the United States.
