Why would he be fired? He was doing the job he was paid to do, and by all accounts doing it well.
The childish reactions of so-called leaders Trump and Bozo made his position untenable.
The plonker(s) who leaked the messages and the editor at Mail who decided to publish them, should be fired. And dealt with under the law that deals with the Official Secrets Act.

While I doubt that this leak has caused any serious, or lasting, damage to international relations (all governments are aware that "diplomatic" dispatches/assessments between governments and their ambassadors can be less than complimentary toward the ambassador's hosting country), this leak does present serious concerns to the British government.
Why release Kim Darroch's dispatches now? Who gains by Darroch's early departure? Was someone hoping this leak would lead to their taking over Darroch's post? Who picks the UK's ambassadors? Does the PM pick the next ambassador? Does the majority party make the selection? Is this the work of Russia or China?
I wish the British police the best of luck in finding the leak(ers).

These were memos/dispatches between an ambassador and his government. Of course they would be considered classified, or higher.

An insult is something you say to someone. This was a report on someone's actions, and entirely justifiable.
The guy was not fired, he resigned, because the release of his private memos compromised his ability to act as ambassador moving forward. As a person meant to act as the go-between for the two countries, when it comes to light that he has reported the president is an inept moron unqualified to be in the position, no longer can it be expected he would be able to deal with the person who now knows that it was reported by this guy that he is an inept moron unqualified to be in the job. The resignation was inevitable.
But that doesn't mean he did anything wrong. He did his job, he reported back to his people, and he obviously reported truthfully. Through circumstances outside of his control, his ability to the job became compromised. This is not a black mark on his CV.

Psst!! Two magic words: Russian hackers! They are supposed to be at fault for everything, right?

What, insulting the president of the United States in memos whilst serving as ambassador to the U.S.?
Get real.

This has been a major embarrassment for Britain. To have your ambassador to the U.S. fired... and make no mistake, he was fired.
