A US wide story. But that's to be expected when public health's been back-burnered and even ignored by leaders at all levels for far too long. Of course no one predicted the scale of this virus. But early indications coming from China showing how quickly it spreads, how devastating it is and how many resources were required to deal with it should have informed leaders to more actively prepare for it. Unfortunately rot started at the top of the top, forcing those below to scramble. Time to learn from this, learn that those espousing a psychopathic greed is good, those saying scr&w those at the low end of the economic spectrum (e.g. the 'poor don't provide jobs'), those with power who don't want government to interfere with their profits today, have allowed things like this to develop.

About half of my Californian friends lost their jobs today. For them and their families, the world is crumbling.
If only people would have taken it more seriously in the beginning.

Not quite true.
I live in the Bay Area, south, which puts me dab smack in the middle of Corvid Central CA. You do not exagerrate. People are hurting now. And it will only get worse and the effects ripple through the economy.
The economy is going south, people are worried with cause, and they are worried if they can pay for, let alone get access to health care that prevents them or their loved ones from death.
I don't care what you call it, but it seems to me the following is becoming pretty clear to most Americans:
We need more economic equality.
We need health care.Lenlen
I also lost job in Japan due to coronavirus. Yet they still do nothing which mean that I lost my job for completely no reason.

Finally!!!!!!!!!
This had to be done at least 45-60 days ago!!! Newsom is very slow thinking!!! Why we elect so slow thinking politicians to run our lives? Why we are so naive to put in charge of governments useless slow thinking politicians? We have so many smart people around, why we need to elect either a stupid Republican or stupid Democrat?! Should governments around world go on a full lockdown as soon as we knew about the virus we could avoid all this mess, avoid killing so many people with our Incompetence. We just needed to isolate and wait for China to get rid of the bug. Now, because of our World Wide Stupidity China is afraid that we will bring back to them the virus...

You are correct. An unfortunate result of America's politician's disregard for public health and the business lobbies pushing to decrease funding and programs that are not set up first and foremost to ensure greater profits for their clients.

Well the "beginning" goes back to early December 2019 when some doctors in China raised the red flag and the Chinese government prosecuted them to shut them up. They kept it under wraps so as not to upset their economy, and let the mass horde of touristss go visit other countries during their Lunar New Year. They long resisted allowing the US CDC and WHO from entering to exanmine on site. And now the Chinese dictatorship is patting themselves on the back claiming to have contained COVID19 in their own country, while more people have now died outside China than inside China and infections continue rampant. So how are other countries supposed to "take it more seriously in the beginning" when it wasn't openly disclosed to them until it was too late?

I think this is overstepping. To prevent people from going over the top allowances need to be made for people to ride their bike, go to a park, or something similar.
A more reasonable ruling is to disallow gatherings of over XXX people or something like that.
There will be unintended consequences to this ruling and I am sitting here wondering how this will be enforced.
Does this also apply to my cousin in Siskiyou County who lives on 160 acres? He rides his horse on public lands (this is legal by the way) and the times I have ridden with him we have never come across anyone.

Sadly looks like the US will find out IF it has the best health care or not, bit scary
Take care folks

As the exponential spread of the Corona virus in California and the rest of the USA continues its upward trajectory, it is now becoming increasingly likely that one casualty of the clueless Trump's denying and dithering and his belated response to the "hoax" will be the Tokyo Olympics. Even if Japan were Corona-free, could the Japanese afford to take the risk of letting down the drawbridge to host the Games and let in the "American" and other "foreign" viruses. Such a contagion would result in a costly Olympics like no other.

Thanks for nothing china.

The numbers infected in the US are now at 14,000 and growing at 40%+ daily. We should probably expect to see infections reach 100,000 before long, probably by the end of April.
It is just fortunate that most of the country is relatively spacious and it is easy to avoid getting into close confinement with others.
The biggest test is going to be for the healthcare system - it is not designed for a pandemic. The only way is if the government offers to pay all bills - which would be ironic.

You are correct that the system is not designed for a pandemic.
There are not enough beds let alone special wards for contagious diseases, so when large numbers of people with Covid 19 turn up at any given hospital the system will be overloaded. This happened and is the continuing situation in Italy.
To put this into real numbers, the county of New Hampshire has a population of about 800,000 people and 3700 hospital beds in total (including V.A hospitals which are especially vulnerable). With those figures in front of us the reality is laid bare,
The only way is if the government offers to pay all bills. How ill this help? If you can't get into a hospital you are not likely to receive a bill.

No nation's healthcare system are designed for a pandemic. It's the response time that will prove the worth of a nation's healthcare system. Discover the virus, develop a test to identify it, minimize its spread, create a vaccine, distribute the vaccine.
Which countries healthcare systems are in the best position to deliver a vaccine to it's citizens?

Absolutely laughable to even think pointing out that China is responsible for this is racist. Not one bit of outcry of racism when Ebola and Zika viruses came out that it’s racist to implicate Africa or Africans. The Chinese media is working overtime and the msm is doing exactly what China wants. So gullible these people.
