Studied Chinese in college, lived in Beijing for a bit, and had thought I'd settle there until I met my Japanese wife who is as wedded to her hometown as she is to me, so I learned Japanese and made a home here. In retrospect, not having to fear of arbitrary arrest as political tit-for-tat makes that a really good thing.

Why am I not surprised? China plays by cold war era rules, you take one of ours, we will take yours.

China's going after the weakest party to these shenanigans by detaining Canadians. Well, if the weak Canadians waiver, Trump will have to sanction them! ROFL! Har! Oh my . . . Smh. MAGMA/KAGEL 2020.

Is the Chinese government really stupid enough to believe that the rest of the world buys this BS? Suddenly Canadians are trying to subvert the Chinese government? And of all people, Canadians? Why in hell would Canada send spies to China?

And their legal rights are being respected... but we can't tell you what they did to be detained. If it wasn't actually happening, it would be a comedy.

Message to Canada: Under Trump we are not a trustworthy neighbor. Put your own self interest first. You have no skin in this game. Put her on the first plane to China and be done with it. By the way, thanks for standing up to Saudi Arabia over human rights. Wish we could borrow some of your sense of what is really important in life.

It is plain to see, this is just revenge by communist China against Canada for arresting the Huawei (PRC government controlled company) executive. One thing is certain: foreign companies will now be starting to withdraw from doing business in PRC. And that includes Japanese car companies, electronics etc. PRC will have to back down, release the innocent Canadians and stop trading with evil Iran.

I don't think China believes for a second that anyone believes that these are legitimate arrests. China still does not wish to go head-to-head with the U.S., so instead, by doing this they are creating a geo-political climate where there are tangible negative consequences for countries that cooperate with the U.S. and are sending the message, "Ally with the U.S. at your risk and expect repercussions."

State security---a nebulous concept at best.

This is no longer a trade war, this is a kidnapping war! Trump kidnapped Huawei CFO lady and the Chinese communist kidnapping the Canadian top spy in Asia "Michael Korvig" in response, now this so called business man!

Obvious tit-for-tat nonsense... the difference being China's CEO actually broke laws.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Hmmmm....  Blaming Trump for the detention of Meng Wenzhou is a bit farfetched.  If anything he has been going easier on Huawei than Congress and US law enforcement.  Us sanctions are often ridiculous and have serious consequences for companies and countries that break them.  Look at how much money banks have paid in fines to DoJ and other US agencies for this.

"She has been accused by U.S. prosecutors of misleading banks about transactions linked to Iran," ha!! banks, well we all know how they work, screw everyone so they can to make a buck, but don't associate us with any wrong doing. So the banks want to do business with Huawei, but don't want to be caught getting their hands dirty. I particularly like the words "misleading banks"in the same sentence, usually those two words are written the other way round, "banks misleading". America getting Canada to do its dirty work is pathetic, especially as so many Chinese make Canada their second home. This arrest, and the tit for tat by China is all political, the US should first get its house in order, corporate America has used and abused China for years at the cost of American jobs, just to make more profits. Now China is a powerhouse the US starts crying foul at every opportunity. Tariffs aren't working, they're not the answer, dialogue is the only way to go.

Moral of the story, don't travel to China if your first name is Michael.

All kidding aside, China is showing how childish and petulant they can be. But in the end, I don't think they care and will get away with it.

Canada beat the US army in a border dispute....

If China thinks they can intimidate and blackmail the seemingly ever apologetic Canadians, they’ll be disappointed.

Not some kind of "divine" laws just laws of U.S. not China's. If U.S. can force some countries to follow them doesn't mean that China can't fight back.

Kidnapping the Huawei CFO lady was part of the dirty deeds of Donald Trump! He himself has said he will intervene the Huawei case! Trump has intervene many things like the Khashoggi murder, his infamous"Rogue killers" remark! What made you people sure he is an honest man ? His lawyer has confirmed everything he done is dirty!

She broke laws that Canada deemed well enough to arrest her for. They aren't going to protest Trump and the others and risk his ire on things like trade and then suddenly be scared of the US and give in to demands to arrest someone. And it doesn't matter if she followed China's laws when committing criminal acts elsewhere. I'm not going to light up a joint in a bar in Tokyo because pot's legal in Canada now -- or at least I wouldn't expect no conséquences.

I predicted this the day Meng Wanzhou was arrested, Im not stating that Meng is innocent, but when a government arrests a high level government official (lets face it all high level CEO in China have links to the Chinese government) in China, you shouldn't really be surprised when they do the same to your citizens. This could turn into a cold war spy exchange like the Soviets and the US were accustomed too in the 80s. Any country doing business in China needs to be aware of the ramifications of their actions, and vice versa

The west has to stand up to china. We may disagree with Trump on MANY things, but if the west does not stand up to China with one voice and place sanctions on that rogue state this is going to continue to occur with other countries as well. EVERYONE, needs to get behind Canada. Economic sanctions, including pressuring oil producing countries to cut their supply to china would send a serious message to Bejing. Enough is enough.

@Aly Rustom : The world hates Donald Trump even more, that includes the People of U.S.!  China has done nothing wrong and China never protecting criminal like saudi MBS as bold as daring like Trump did! His lawyer Michael Cohen is in jail and Trump is in the big trouble! He better be wise and stop using the Huawei CFO lady as a trade war bargaining chip, enough is enough !

China has done nothing wrong

detaining innocent people is doing something wrong

China never protecting criminal like saudi MBS as bold as daring like Trump did!

China's whole communist party is made up of criminals

"The legal rights and interests of these two Canadians have been safeguarded,"

What a joke! China does not even safe guard their own people's rights.
