Japan does have several spy satellites and the US has a lot of them. Of course they can detect this kind of NK activities rather easily. I guess it doesn't necessarily mean GSOMIA is useless but Japan and the US are capable enough to monitor what NK is doing.

This time, these missiles landed away from Japan's territory and nothing like imminent threat for the US. Not sure if Trump reacts strongly here. I know Japan is not going to do anything aggressive even if the missiles go over Japan.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

I would say that detecting a missile and being able to do something after detection are two completely different things.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

They should be getting pretty close to perfecting their missile by now.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

U.S. envoy on North Korea Stephen Biegun was in Seoul this week to discuss ways to get negotiations back on track.

LOL! Didn't Dump solve this problem already? The "Great Negotiatior" strikes again! LOL!

9 ( +17 / -8 )

Kim continues to test his missiles and make more nukes....

The US pulls back exercises decreasing readiness...

Donnie looks impotent and humiliated from his useless three meetings with Kim...

This is what "losing" looks like....

9 ( +9 / -0 )

This is getting tedious. Could Trump's best mate give it a break or test them off the US coast, instead?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

It’s beginning to look like the U.S. is going to recognize NK as a nuclear power as long as it doesn’t possess ICBMs that can reach US mainland.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

@smith: I am totally neutral, way more than you think. The fact I said "pro-South Korea" means simply I meant to say the ones that support current South Korean government actions. How I should call these people, without they feel "insulted"? Plus, yeah, Japan played a major role in South Korean development and this role was supported from the US. I don't get what Japanese occupation has to do with post-WW II and post- Korean war geopolitical order.

https://m.news.naver.com/read.nhn?mode=LSD&sid1=100&oid=001&aid=0011036991

Korean Joint Chief of Staff reported the incident at 7:36 AM while Kyodo and NHK reported it 7:24 AM and 7:28 AM, respectively.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Nothing to worry or see. BFF Trump says so.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

I don't understand the attitude of some pro-South Korea guys here. I wonder what they read. Moon is obviously pro-Chinese, but it's like they want to deny this fact. I am not implying this thing is good or negative, only saying how the things are in a neutral way. South Korea is getting closer and closer to China because of economic reasons. Being in a friendly relationship with China brings more economical advantage for them than being friendly with the US. The US used Japan to develop South Korea in the past decades, and they hoped to keep South Korea under their control this way. Things are changing because of both American and Japanese economic decline in the region. Go to read some good geopolitical analysis about this stuff. Denying that Moon is pro-Chinese rather than pro-American is absurd.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

I understand some South Koreans dislike the idea to enter in Chinese sphere of influence, but this is what is happening successfully in these last years, and Moon is favoring this process. South Korea built up her national identity over her hate against Japan. The US had to correct that in the past years, but their mistake was to pander any South Korean anti-Japanese claim only to buy their obedience (see the 2015 accord for the comfort women, supported by Obama). The result is that South Koreans prefer China over Japan, and of course, also North Koreans, that are their "brothers". The current situation is a result of American strategical mistake.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Please, someone can tell me how what I wrote here

South Korea is getting closer and closer to China because of economic reasons.

is false?

We can find many sources that confirm this fact. For example, try to read this analysis:

https://www.hudson.org/research/15271-south-korea-just-made-a-big-mistake

It explains very well how both the latest South Korean governments are favoring China over the US. Please, tell me where this article says something incorrect. And I'm not the biggets fan of the US, but I find the facts described in this article rather objective. How is false to say that South Korea remains committed to the "Three Nos"?

7 ( +9 / -2 )

You seem to be claiming that Kyoto and NHK knew more quickly than the Korean JCS. That's a questionable inference based on your quote alone.

0h no. It’s even worse. Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff announced the incident 30 minutes after the Japan counterparts.

https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_international/articles/000162744.html

Korea does not posses a satellite that monitors NK’s BM and thus relies on U.S. and Japan for the information. On the other hand Korea does possess radar and Aegis to verify the location of the launch and trajectory. This time, however, the Korean government report was 30 minutes after Japanese government. It appears Korean side could not determine the launch detail earlier. Also, there is a discrepancy between Japan and Korea in regards to the initial report of the landing distance. Although there are concerns as a result of Korea’s withdrawal of GSOMIA, the agreement will still be i effect until November 22nd and therefore, both will exchange information relating to this incident.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

I see more of these the closer we get to the Olympics. Bigger audience.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I have to wonder aside all these posts and article, has anyone wondered how many rockets are under the water by now? it's not like they are exploding them or going out to retrieve them is it? I wonder if JT can do a story on this, regarding illicit pollution from war mongering on the already stressed out oceans.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

@Hillclimber: I wasn't able to find that specific Korean article anymore, I read so many articles from tons of sources from many different Countries on a daily basisi and I can't spend my whole day only to find a specific Korean article, to pander the pro-South Korean guys who lacks trust in what I write except if it's not from south Korean sources. I just linked an article from an American source, but whatever. People are free to think what they want.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

the pro-South Korean guys who lacks trust in what I write except if it's not from south Korean sources

except if it's from South Korean sources, I meant.

Actually the talk on the streets is these launches are simply preliminary tests for the celebrations and festivities when Trump & Kim are jointly awarded the Noble Peace Prize as recommended by Abe-chan. It's only a few months away, so preparations are necessary.

Akin to fireworks - you know Catherine Wheels, Sparklers, Roman Candles etc.

Come December 10th we will finally have Global Peace.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Actually Trump gave his seal of approval. Trump said he was OK with NK's missile tests as long as they weren't ICBMs.

Notice that on this original article, the tests didn’t reach Japan’s EEZ. If that’s the case, where do you think these missiles were targeted towards if it’s for real?

Let’s not forget this part.

“Korean Joint Chief of Staff reported the incident at 7:36 AM while Kyodo and NHK reported it 7:24 AM and 7:28 AM, respectively.”

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Moon's most favorite son.

And as always, some folks far out of touch with reality continually spout off about how Japan is the 'aggressor' in that region.

smh

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Celebration fireworks for GSOMIA exit? Both sides of the Peninsula are half-witted regimes inflicting themselves.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Such fireworks money could save so many people from starving. Kim Jong-Un really does not care about own people. I doubt Kim wants his own country unified with S Korea. It seems to me Kim rather wants to take over S Korea, its whole money and its whole technology as leader of one Korea.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

No worries POTUS has many letters of reassurance that everything is great and Kim is a swell guy, a great guy. No worries. Meanwhile the NK's are laughing at all three Japan, SK and the US. The ploy has been nothing but stalling while they continued to improve their weapons systems despite whatever sanctions they get since none have worked for well over 20yrs. As long as Russia and China support NK the weapons testing and division of alliance will continue to degrade over time. A scenario that is interestingly become realistic. A full pullout of US businesses and US forces out of Asia.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

In the view of Kim Jong-un and his government, Trump is a moron who always thinks that he is an excellent negotiator. It is likely that Kim will continue to conduct missile tests until Trump gives NK some concessions.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

What is South Korea doing? It acts like a bridge to North Korea while demonstrating the military power in the fire drill with the US near birder then tattletell on North Korea. Seriously, are they crazy? Then they don't want to share intelligence with Japan while making a pact with North Korea on the common rnemy Japan as it terminates Japan from the treaty? For what? The sensitive materials that Japan was careful of sending because the list of companies may not have existed? Did Japan stop sending them to the verified companies? No. So who is at fault again?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Japan's Coast Guard said it detected suspected ballistic missile launches from North Korea on Saturday,

Good. Proof that Japan can somehow protect herself and really didn’t/ doesn’t need the GSOMIA with S.Korea.

3 ( +13 / -10 )

Is it that time of the month again?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

They're short range missiles. They're not flying over Japan.

Speak to the citizens of Hokkaido who have had missiles fly over them in recent times. Stop talking like the missiles are no big deal for Japanese.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

Maybe if Iran launches ballistic missiles into the Persian gulf maybe Trump could be buddies with their leader too.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

This is a response to S. Korea.

Read the article. Kim mad about F35 and military exercise between S. Korea and US.

None of this missiles flew over Japan or was a threat to Japan, Ganbare not sure if you read the article on this one.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Zichi

You always support S. Korea.

Did you read how far the missile flew? 380km (236 miles).

S. Korean supporters attempting to get Japan to care about missiles shoot within range of S. Korea.

You forgot to mentioned GSOMIA and how Japan will get destroyed by missiles equipped with Nukes flying towards Tokyo.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Unforgivable. NK and Chairman Kim are threatening Japans very existance. Trump will not be happy about this

You misunderstand. Trump has in essence given NK permission to use short range missiles. He has no problem with that as long as they are not intercontinental which would threaten USA.

It is similar to the way the USA tolerates Pakistan having nuclear weapons. As long as they are used in that region, OK (ie meaning India), but intercontinental? Not at all.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Over the past two weeks, the US, as is their right, launched test missiles.

Yesterday NK. as is their right, launched two test missile.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

The intelligence is translated from Korean into English and then into Japanese- what could go wrong?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Ok, it’s quite simple, if Kim wants sanction relief, going about it this way won’t do it. It will further push for the sanctions to remain and for the President to keep his foot on Kim’s neck. How foolish, the guy could have a thriving economy, be on the world stage, increase his status, but nope....

Photo ops, cancelling treasury sanctions, and cancelling war games is a weird way for Donny to have his foot on Kim's neck. The photo ops alone have thrust Kim onto the world stage.

Donny has done nothing different than previoys presidents except to give Kim legitimacy, but thst clearly is not helping the situation.

Remember when conservatives excoriated Obama for saying he was willing to talk to our enemies? I do. Remember when conservatives started slobbering all over Donny for talking to our enemies? I do.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

In the view of Kim Jong-un and his government, Trump is a moron who always thinks that he is an excellent negotiator.

In the view of every world leader and their governments, Donny is a moron who always thinks that he is an excellent negotiator.

Fixed that one.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Ganbare Japan

NK and Chairman Kim are threatening Japans very existance.

Can yo blame him?

Trump will not be happy about this.

Actually Trump gave his seal of approval. Trump said he was OK with NK's missile tests as long as they weren't ICBMs.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

Political affairs mean mindset games...However, what is happening now is kind of damned brains going different directions. Nobody of them know how dangerous is that to possess nukes. Only to show "power", very silly minds. North Korea is a good example...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Japan needs to go nuclear

It really doesn't.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Take the "fat runt" running North Korea, put him in a short box and send him out into space!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Ganbare Japan: "Unforgivable."

Except that Trump doesn't care, and therefore Abe, with his head so far up Trump's behind he could crawl out his mouth, cannot care either, and must approve of it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It will further push for the sanctions to remain and for the President to keep his foot on Kim’s neck.

how is Trump's foot on his neck that would suggest Kim cannot move, hes still launching missiles, still has his nukes and still Trumps BFF. nothing's changed, nothing to see, despite all the visits all the love letters and Trump profiting from taxpayer funded trips to Mar A Lago for a games of golf and chocolate cake. maybe time for a new excuse that hasnt been done to death.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Take the "fat runt" running North Korea, put him in a short box and send him out into space!

sound great in theory, but problem is one on Kims crazed generals just may step up and take his place and have no problem using the nukes they have or raining 10s thousands of artillery rounds onto Seoul. Would be nice if real world politics was as easy as in the movies.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ganbare Japan! - Unforgivable. NK and Chairman Kim are threatening Japans very existance. Trump will not be happy about this. The sanctions will remain in place to starve NK into stopping this madness. The risk is, that Moon and SK will be secretly breaking the sanctions to ccollaborate with the North.

Oh, good grief! Can the melodramatics be stopped please! “Japan’s very existence?” Seriously? I don’t know which one is more hilarious. The fact you posted this rubbish or the fact you actually believe it. Next time you have your dictionary out look up, paranoid delusion. Then, find someone to help you deal with it.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

If I go down to the beach and set off a couple of bottle rockets into the ocean, can I get INTERNATIONAL COVERAGE too? The U.S., on any given 'training' day, probably blows up, shoots off, drops, throws, and wastes more H.E. ordnance than North Korea even possesses. What is so world threatening about a couple of rockets from a tiny, impotent country except that Abe's Japan needs a bogieman? Can't have a conservative idiot without an equally idiotic bogieman. That is AMERICAN HISTORY. At this point, Japan's SDF probably could roll over North Korea (without China) in a couple of days. Sure, North Korea has an army but what is the morale like in that army once people must face serious promises of Death. In their 'secret hearts', will NK's young people be willing to die for Kim when the promise of free i-phones and dates with Japanese cosplayers are promised to those who surrender? Maybe throw in a pair of Air Jordan's, there must be a cache of unsold inventory somewhere... But bringing paranoia to ALL of Japan because of a couple of fizzle sticks shot into the ocean IS DOING KIM'S WORK FOR HIM, NO???

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Can someone remind me again how Donny is doing anything different than previous presidents that does not benefit Kim?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Countries launch missile ALL THE TIME. How would they ever test them if they didn't?This is standard practice for all countries...

Fake news propaganda.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

North Korea is America's bargaining chip for the protection money from Japan and SK. They are active now, because Trump wants to renegotiate the fees for the "World class 'merican protection" for it's "friend" nations.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Let’s not forget this part.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

You know China is telling NK what to do just to retaliate for the Trump tariffs. Japan needs to go nuclear and we can watch Chinese government choke on their mabo dofu...

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

The sanctions will remain in place to starve NK into stopping this madness.

Which is exactly what other presidents did without giving Kim photo ops, sanctions relief, and suspension of war games.

The risk is, that Moon and SK will be secretly breaking the sanctions to ccollaborate with the North.

Only for those that blindly hate Sputh Korea.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Ok, it’s quite simple, if Kim wants sanction relief, going about it this way won’t do it. It will further push for the sanctions to remain and for the President to keep his foot on Kim’s neck. Alex80: "I don't understand the attitude of some pro-South Korea guys here. I wonder what they read. Moon is obviously pro-Chinese, but it's like they want to deny this fact. I am not implying this thing is good or negative, only saying how the things are in a neutral way."

Yeah, but that's the thing -- you're not being neutral at all, and your opening remark about not understanding "pro-South Korea guys here" spells that out clearly. Try not to see it as pro this or anti that, and ACTUALLY look at it neutrally and objectively. And then you go on to say South Korea was created by the US based on Japan... not neutral at all any more than saying Japanese colonization taught Taiwanese people how to take baths, etc.

As for saying SK is becoming like China, please! Abe has given himself an extra term in office, as Xing has (for life), democracy is becoming one-party rule here, with the leaders declaring they can do anything because a win means they were mandated, and I could list a million more examples that put Japan far ahead of SK in terms of heading towards a CHina-like country. Just saying...

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

Good. Proof that Japan can somehow protect herself and really didn’t/ doesn’t need the GSOMIA with S.Korea.

National security 'somehow'.

It has a ring to it, maybe it should be the Japanese Defence Force's motto.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

They're short range missiles. They're not flying over Japan.

Kim's just saving face being as how all the sanctions are still on. Right on schedule.
