When I first started travelling internationally, more than 40 years ago, the term 'ugly American' was already in vogue. I never thought I'd see the day when it would be universally acceptable. But, as a Canadian living very close to the border with that country, and in spite of many nice Americans I've met over the years, I have to say it's accurate. And it's a shame. What Trump's supporters are doing is nothing less than denigrating their country in the eyes of the world. Talk about Rome burning.

Thank God we have better things to think about.

This "article" is a mess and typical of the garbage that gets rolled out by the MSM from their cheese mill. The authors clearly show their bias with the sneering tone throughout and poisoning the well with subjective adjectives instead of just reporting the facts, and then claim

Election law experts have said the Texas lawsuit stands little chance of success and lacks legal merit.

by quoting just one of them:

"Both procedurally and substantively, it's a mess," Justin Levitt, an election law professor at Loyola Law School in California, said of the Texas lawsuit. "There's zero chance the court agrees to take the case."

Of course, they're not interested in balancing it out with an opinion from another expert source with a different opinion, or a comment from someone on the legal team launching the challenge. So, it's just a snide opinion piece pretending to be a news report. Par for the course, really.

Writing on Twitter earlier on Wednesday, Trump said, "We will be INTERVENING in the Texas (plus many other states) case. This is the big one. Our Country needs a victory!"

Yeah, having gone four years without it really is about time.

America will never see a normal election again. Trump has sowed the seeds of distrust and discord well.

Neither party will benefit. But Trump will come out of it all stronger than ever.

Thanks, you twisted, egotistical schmuck.

clearly show their bias with the sneering tone

Do you find the following to be sneering as well?

The Texas lawsuit is widely considered a longshot to succeed. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, a Republican, previously panned the Texas suit as fundamentally "wrong."

"With all due respect, the Texas Attorney General is constitutionally, legally and factually wrong about Georgia," a Carr spokesperson told the Dallas Morning News. Carr is the recently named chairman of the Republican Attorneys General Association.

They may as well just start a Facebook group, it’d have the same impact. Court won’t go near it.

I imagine Parler is exploding right now, must be very exciting for them.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Texas gets support from 17 other states that also stand against democracy. There, fixed the title.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world have absolutely no interest in this app. Maybe the man-child can switch from Twitter to Parler if he's so upset adults aren't taking him seriously.

Waiting for the man-child to be booted out the WH in mid-January. And fumigate that place, for god's sake.

Are there any?

Perhaps you have a link or to two to these other “expert sources”?

Why is this silliness still going on? In the end, Bill Maher really said it best when he repeatedly called the current president a "whiny little bitch". What a sore loser. Incredible.

A little, but you've only taken a grab from that article, so you'd have to link to the whole thing to prove your point.

The entire article above, though, is a demonstrable sneer.

-12 ( +4 / -16 )

Can we all take a moment to remember Attorney General Ken Paxton is under investigation for a number of crimes?

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.statesman.com/amp/43162363

If the Supreme Court won't hear Pennsylvania Republicans lawsuit, they almost certainly won't entertain this one.

This is nothing more than Kenny P angling for a pardon.

Lawyers be gettin' paid.

Election law experts have said the Texas lawsuit stands little chance of success and lacks legal merit.

If they can file documents with proper spellings I think that itself will be an achievement.

Though the lawsuits will not be worth the paper they are printed on.

Except for the not so bright supporters of the GOP, their money is funding these lawsuits which are so stupid they dont even get a hearing!!!!

I think Trump has taken in about $200 million already and can use it for anything he wants. The Bernie Madoff of politics.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

The Trump sore loser Republican states are as follows:

In addition to Missouri, the states joining Texas were: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and West Virginia

These states are asked to immediately go to loser therapy, and quit wasting everyone's time.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

I think Trump has taken in about $200 million already and can use it for anything he wants.

He's got it made, his base will continue to pay him when he's out of office, all he has to do is ask them. How convenient!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

If you read the US Constitution including the 12th Amendment and the Electoral Count Act of 1887 the US Supreme Court has no role to play. It is up to Congress to either accept or reject the electors of each state and accept their vote. Ultimately it is up to the states to settle on who their electors are. There is very little room for the courts to intervene and I suspect the justices, with an eye on the future, will be reluctant to intervene as the precedent set would be corrosive.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Lines have been clearly drawn: Trump and his Republicans vs. the US citizenry.

The global anti-democracy movements and despots like Xi, Putin, Erdogan and their ilk must be so pleased watching Trump and his Republicans do more damage to the US than any foreign power ever has.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

No matter the number, there is still no evidence of fraud and the lawsuit has no merit.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Well Ken Paxton got what he wanted for now. He has no illusions that this will go anywhere but it did get him noticed front and centre by Trump. Seeing he is already under indictment and now facing a new investigation for bribery, his only hope is a presidential pardon and now he is well on his way to getting one.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to let him join a long-shot lawsuit by Texas seeking to overturn his election loss by throwing out the voting results in four states, litigation that also drew support from 17 other states.

If you want to see how a "coup" works - and a blatant attempt to subvert democracy, then just review what this group of Repub fascists are doing....

That's today's Republican Party - no longer the party of Reagan, the party of Putin, Xi, and Khomeini...

Lots of downvotes! Nice. Just because you don't like the fact that I showed this article to be a poorly disguised opinion piece doesn't mean its not true. Must've hit raw nerve.

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

And in a result that stunned literally no one with a functional brain, the Supreme Court took less than 45 minutes to come to a 9-0 unanimous decision to write off the entire charade with a single sentence.

Must've hit raw nerve.

Or maybe we are just really, really, really tired of people trying to defend the indefensible in Trump's actions. When you read simple facts such as " Trump has falsely claimed he won re-election and has made baseless allegations of widespread voting fraud. Election officials at the state level have said they have found no evidence of such fraud." as sneer and proof of a "poorly disguised opinion piece", we have nothing but downvotes to offer you. Because we're all just tired of it.

I guess your radar for detecting the tone of an article needs some calibrating.

Let me help you:

"a long-shot lawsuit"

They could have just said "lawsuit" instead of editorialising. This is supposed to be a news article.

"and has made baseless allegations of widespread voting fraud"

Investigations are still ongoing, and given sworn affidavits and video that has been emerging, claiming that Trump's allegations are baseless is again editorialising.

"Democrats and other critics have accused Trump of aiming to reduce public confidence in U.S. election integrity and undermine democracy by trying to subvert the will of the voters."

This is arguably news, but the writers failed to be specific and name other critics and the tone verges on editorialising. To repair it, they could have just included a couple of verifiable quotes, especialy from non-Democrat aligned sources. But that's just too hard.

Of course Democrats don't like the challenges, but their own behaviour during this election and over the past 4 years has contributed heavily to the lack of confidence in the electoral process. Of course, when the shoe was on the other foot in the 2000 election, they were quite happy to challenge the result.

Jsapc, the same goes as above.

They could have, but they didn't. So what? Using an adjective you disagree with hardly proves a bias, good grief.

I am curious, though, how you'd characterize a lawsuit which alleges lackluster election security in states such as Pennsylvania disenfranchised voters in Texas, when the Supreme Court won't even hear the underlying case. If not a "longshot" how would you characterize this suit?

"and has made baseless allegations of widespread voting fraud"Investigations are still ongoing, and given sworn affidavits and video that has been emerging, claiming that Trump's allegations are baseless is again editorialising.

Lol the election was over a month ago, and Republicans have over and over claimed voter fraud, but can't find a single instance of widespread voter fraud. Is that editorializing? No, it's reporting the facts, there is no widespread voter fraud.

Must have read a different article. I cannot see any sneering in it.

Also, I know a couple of people who have worked for Reuters and they are conservative in outlook. One of them voted for Brexit.

Of course, they're not interested in balancing it out with an opinion from another expert source with a different opinion...

Perhaps they couldn't find any. I don't recall reading any substantial, well-informed support for Trump's position, perhaps you could point us to some. Ideally not from some conservative pundit with a GOP bias.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

You know, if President Trump early on had said: "Wear a mask, save a life.", we wouldn't be having this discussion.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Investigations are still ongoing,

No. Just, no. Trump and the republican party have lost over 50 (FIFTY) lawsuits alleging fraud. Their own lawayers have said again and again in court there was no fraud anywhere. Over 50 lawsuits lors. It's over. Get over it. It's exhausting.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Not like it is surprising, but sad to see most of the republican party come out of the closet in favor of authoritarianism and sadly teaching it to the ignorant masses. Typical commie approach from Trotsky to Stalin. Ask your trumpette if they would prefer a Trump dictator for life and no more independent judiciary and you will get an unqualified "heil!"

The democrats suck for always failing to wield the power given by the electorate. Weak and lame, but still American The republicans of now, including major players in the senate and media, wholly embrace a dictatorship. And they claim to believe in the constitution... a product of the liberal education of the brightest of the enlightenment. Argh. Sad fate in the long run for America.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Plenty of sneering goes both ways. Trump loves to give it but his supporters, just like the man himself, cannot take it. Maybe start calling him out on that and then come back and have a wah about it. ZFG

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Must have read a different article. I cannot see any sneering in it.

It doesn't repeat enough of Trump's lies for right-wingers. They believe that alt-facts have the same right to exposure as real facts and get upset when people don't fall for the toxic rubbish that they have long since signed up for.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

I guess these days trump supporters have to take whatever small victories they can find or imagine.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

No. Just, no. Trump and the republican party have lost over 50 (FIFTY) lawsuits alleging fraud.

This is going exactly as planned by the Trump legal team, they do not want to waste any time in the state courts, If there lawsuit was accepted than that would have been a problem, given the time pressure. So the plan is to make the case in the state legislature, in which they have been very successful and than to House of Representatives / Supreme Court.

The ‘plan’ isn’t working. Lemme guess, it’s a top secret plan?

Lines have been clearly drawn

The Lincoln Project has said that in their ads. They are a coalition of Republicans Against Trump. The ads say 'Either you are for democracy or for Donald Trump'.

And another line has clearly been drawn as well. Either are for God and/or Jesus Christ or you're for Donald Trump the false messiah, an Antichrist. That's in The Lincoln Project's ad titled 'The MAGA Church'. It's very disturbing, a bit scary and Trump is using some very ugly unholy language in it.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

It doesn't repeat enough of Trump's lies for right-wingers.

What lies?

They believe that alt-facts have the same right to exposure as real facts and get upset when people don't fall for the toxic rubbish that they have long since signed up for.

So in other words, Democrats criticizing the Trump presidency as legitimate is ok, Conservatives and Republicans criticizing the legitimacy of the system and Biden is not ok? Yeah....that seems fair.....lol

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

What lies?

This is a very disingenuous question and has been answered hundreds of times. The man has lied thousands of times throughout his career and presidency. His own legal people (apart from the likes of Sidney and Rudy, natch) won't even mention his baseless accusations of fraud in the courts.

So in other words, Democrats criticizing the Trump presidency as legitimate is ok, Conservatives and Republicans criticizing the legitimacy of the system and Biden is not ok? Yeah....that seems fair.....lol

Of course they can criticize, but there is a point when it tips into crazed commentary which has little basis in reality.

He doesn't like the result and he wants it overturned. He repeatedly makes claims of fraud, when there is no evidence of.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Yeah....that seems fair.....lol

Why should it be fair? The law isn’t fair. It’s biased toward the innocent and against the guilty. I stopped saying “it isn’t fair” when I was a child. Facts aren’t fair, they are facts.

Team Biden have facts, team trump have foot stamping and conspiracies. No, it isn’t ‘fair’.
