Democrats urge new probe of Kavanaugh, impeachment inquiry

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged a House of Representatives panel to investigate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, while a Democratic lawmaker filed an impeachment resolution in the wake of new allegations of sexual misconduct by the conservative judge when he was in college in the 1980s.

The moves by Harris, one of 20 Democratic presidential candidates, and Representative Ayanna Pressley, a progressive on the left of the party, signaled impatience among some Democrats with congressional leaders unenthusiastic about pursuing Kavanaugh's impeachment, though their efforts appeared unlikely to spur action.

Harris said in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler that the panel should "hold Mr Kavanaugh accountable for his prior conduct and testimony."

Nadler on Monday faulted the FBI's probe of prior sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh ahead of his narrow confirmation by the Senate in October 2018, saying in a radio interview it "apparently was a sham." But Nadler also said his panel had its "hands full" with investigating Republican President Donald Trump.

In her letter to Nadler, Harris suggested the House Judiciary Committee could create a task force and retain outside counsel if it did not have the time or resources to pursue an inquiry of Kavanaugh now.

Harris and several other Democratic presidential candidates called for Kavanaugh's impeachment after the New York Times published an essay over the weekend detailing what it described as a previously unreported incident of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh.

Others include former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro; U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker; South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg; and former U.S. Representative Beto O'Rourke.

Front-runner Joe Biden, the former vice president, stopped short of advocating impeachment, instead backing a probe of how the FBI handled its investigation.

Warren told reporters on Tuesday that she believed "the only tool available" to investigate Kavanaugh further is an impeachment proceeding.

Pressley's resolution in the House called for Nadler's committee to launch an impeachment inquiry, and said the panel could create a task force or hire consultants if necessary. Pressley is one of four progressive House Democrats often referred to as "The Squad."

Pressley's resolution and Harris' letter are unlikely to spark results. Calls to impeach Kavanaugh have received a lackluster response from Democratic congressional leadership, most of whom maintain that Democrats should focus on issues and legislation, not impeachments.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made no comment on the recent allegations against Kavanaugh. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer sidestepped a question Tuesday about whether an impeachment probe should be launched against the justice, saying: "I never thought Kavanaugh should be on the bench and I still don't today."

Trump and other Republicans likewise rejected pursuing Kavanaugh's impeachment. Trump encouraged Kavanaugh, whose appointment cemented the Supreme Court's 5-4 conservative majority, to sue for libel. Vice President Mike Pence said on Tuesday that "the calls by Democratic candidates for president to remove Justice Kavanaugh from the court are a disgrace."

The New York Times reported that the FBI had knowledge of the additional allegation but did not investigate it thoroughly, Harris wrote in the letter to Nadler. She encouraged Nadler to examine the agency's handling of the matter, and also whether Kavanaugh was truthful during his confirmation hearings.

Nadler said on Monday that FBI Director Christopher Wray would face questions about the agency's investigation into Kavanaugh when Wray appears before the committee next month.

No Supreme Court justice has ever been ousted through the impeachment process outlined in the U.S. Constitution, in which the House initiates proceedings and the Senate then holds a trial on whether to remove an individual from office. The only justice ever impeached in the House was spared by the Senate in 1804.

The Dems need focus their strategy. Donny first, then we can move on the Kav with the power of the presidency.

As with Clarence Thomas, why didn't Brett Kavanaugh withdraw his name from further consideration with such a black cloud of public suspicion hanging over his nomination?

Even if he's innocent, to put on the black robe of a U.S. Supreme Court justice is comparable to becoming a high ranking priest, and if the people you're representing don't trust you, then you should refuse the honor in order to maintain public faith in the institution (even if you're innocent). Alas, as with Thomas before him, these Republican appointed justices don't understand this, are too selfish or simply don't give a damn about it.

All of the above.

The GOP would never let something as trivial as sexually assaulted females get in the way of someone who believes conservative policies.

Donny nominating the Kav was just another part of draining the swamp. Donny is doing a great job of draining the swamp:

According to the law, it certainly appears that Kavanaugh is innocent. Being repeatedly attacked by Democrats who have been unable to actually produce any credible evidence of Kavanaugh's wrong doing does not mean that Kavanaugh is "guilty" of anything.

Many people do trust Kavanaugh. Democrats who vowed to attack any Supreme Court nominee selected by Trump don't like Kavanaugh. There are many people who still do not trust Obama's picks (Sotomayor and Kagan) to be just, or fair. If Kavanaugh should be impeached for hurting people's feelings, Sotomayor and Kagan should be sent packing for the same reason.

This latest political debacle was started by a former Clinton lawyer's claim that something happened decades ago. The FBI had been informed of this rumor last year. The alleged victim of this faux outrage has told her friends she doesn't remember this alleged incident. Two alleged reporters, who did not talk to the alleged victim, repeated the claim in their book, and made the alleged victim's name public. (That should teach the alleged victim a lesson for not talking to these media-types.) Might as well face the fact that this type of demonstration is the best show that the Democrat Party can produce.

Kavanaugh's behavior towards women is not normal. I've been at lots of parties with co-workers and have never seen anyone doing the things Kavanaugh is accused of doing. It's not normal. His actions are those of a serial sexual abuser. How in the name of God can this deviant be on the SCOTUS?

If the opportunity arises where this president is convicted for crimes before and during his time in office, then everything Trump's ever done as president should be declared illegal. This means that any appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court should be regarded as null and void.

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged a House of Representatives panel to investigate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh,

For chrissakes, the man's been investigated enough and this latest "victim" has no recollection of such an incident, again over 3 decades ago at an alleged party. Harris needs to be voted out of Congress, and, by the way, she will never become the president of the United States. She is abhorrent.

Kavanaugh's behavior towards women is not normal

That's not what any of the women who actually know him say, Crazy.

How in the name of God can this deviant be on the SCOTUS?

Because there's zero evidence that he did any of the things he's been accused of, Crazy.

According to the law, it certainly appears that Kavanaugh is innocent.

According to the law everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Appearance doesn't matter, although his beer guzzling, forcing himself on women certainly 'appears' NOT to show innocence. Kavanaugh would do anything not to go to trial and be proven innocent, because he knows he's guilty of sexual assault,

Because there's zero evidence that he did any of the things he's been accused of, Crazy.

What? Tons of evidence. Many have seen his excessive drinking. Assault on Ford. Assault on Ramirez. His own admission to drinking a ton. Many, many friends and associates saying it is completely plausible he did acts of sloppy behavior and sexual assault. When people like him argue or obfuscate direct questions, it undermines all credibility because of his weasel-ly answers and misdirection. That's not a quality I want in a SCOTUS judge.

So what about policies? I know Democrats think 24/7 about impeaching Trump, but besides doing the impossible and now they’re just completely insane and want to focus on impeaching Kavanaugh over what? A bogus story that the NYT had to retract? They have no policies, everything they’re running on won’t come to fruition, but they still want to focus on Trump and now Kavanaugh and forget the people. You would think Dems would have learned by now and put their hatred and anger aside and let it control them, but no....

How long will the Republicans defend having a rapist on the Supreme Court.

This is just absolute madness. Liberals convicting a guy without a single shred of evidence, what to give the accuser who can’t even seem to recount what exactly happened, but he’s guilty? I’ll say this, even the legendary RBG thinks the world of Kavanaugh, anyway...all I can say to the Democrats, good luck for the What now...15th time...keep trying...

I've never seen such a passionate smear campaign against a single individual. The Democrats are so afraid of another Trump nominated judge on SCOTUS, they're attacking Kavanaugh yet again on yet another frivolous charge. Pathetic. I hope Kavanaugh sues these people, including Kamala Harris.

Kamala Harris runs with this false story, and we're to trust her to be POTUS?

Give me a break. I hope Kavanaugh sues her into oblivion.

Spot on 15 times and still nothing, obviously liberals have no facts so they are running on the policy of slinging enough mud (lies) and hope some of that mud (lies) stick or the Justice resigns - Obviously Kavanaugh is making decisions that the left don't like so they want to get rid of him by any means possible.
