U.S. House panel debates gun control; Democrats pressuring Republicans

U.S. Democrats, looking to heighten their profile on the hot-button issue of gun control, moved forward on Tuesday with new measures aimed at curbing gun violence, while President Donald Trump also planned to huddle with Republican leaders.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives Judiciary Committee began considering three pieces of gun legislation for the full House to review, more than a month after gun safety surged back to the forefront of U.S. public debate in the wake of back-to-back mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

The bills are part of a coordinated strategy between House and Senate Democrats to put pressure on Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell to allow a vote on gun-related bills including universal background check legislation that passed the House in February.

"We are not taking these additional actions simply to respond to mass shootings," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler told the proceedings.

"We are acting because of the urgent need to respond to the daily toll of gun violence in our communities, whether they are mass shootings or not, and whether or not they make national headlines," he said.

Republicans pledged to support "sensible" legislation on guns but denounced the Democratic legislation as flawed and a risk to gun owner rights under the Second Amendment.

"What I am not willing to do is support legislation that will do nothing to make us safer and simultaneously infringes on the rights and liberties guaranteed by our Constitution. Unfortunately, all three bills we are considering today do just that," said the committee's top Republican, Representative Doug Collins.

The panel began the debate with so-called red flag legislation that would allow courts and law enforcement officials to remove guns from people deemed a risk to communities. Other measures would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines and extend an existing prohibition against gun possession for those convicted of hate crimes from the felony to the misdemeanor level.

Trump and Republican leaders from the House and Senate met at the White House and were expected to discuss gun legislation among other matters.

McConnell reiterated on Tuesday that he would wait for the White House to propose gun legislation that Trump would sign. On Monday, Trump stressed the need to protect gun owner rights.

With a majority of voters favoring background check legislation, Democrats are hoping to underscore the sharp differences between them and Republicans at a time when, according to a new Gallup poll, nearly half of Americans worry that they or a family member could become victims of a mass shooting.

"This is a representative democracy and the people want it, and we have to perform our offices on the assumption - whether it is true or not - that everyone else in our political system will do their jobs," said Representative Jamie Raskin, a House Judiciary Democrat.

Staff-level discussions between Congress and the White House during the August break focused on "red flag" legislation and proposals to close loops in current background checks that exempt internet sales and private gun sales, including those that take place at gun shows.

House Democrats, who are also nearing a majority of support for an assault weapons ban, expect the bills to clear the committee and the full House.

Some were stubbornly optimistic that the Republican-controlled Senate might eventually take them up.

"I choose to be positive that we're going to listen to the American people at some point and do something," Representative Debbie Dingell said.

Republicans care more about NRA money than dead children in schools.

Gun control works, just look at Hawaii where guns cannot flow in from other jurisdictions with lax gun control laws.

No, they care, that’s why they support the NRA, but Democrats would rather do whatever they can to take away our rights and undermine our 2nd amendment, it’ll never happen.

Hawaii is a small Island, different politics, history etc...funny how they can have gun control, but it is one of the worst when it comes to pedophilia. Funny how they don’t see that as a huge priority to tackle or even seeing it as a serious priority.

How's that GOP mental health legislation coming along? Still trying to kill Obamacare and Medicaid expansion so tens of millions of Americans lose their coverage?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Trump and Mitch are looking for a fall guy... because they know if they don't have one, they are going to get crucified at the polls in 2020.

The majority of Americans want gun issues legislated --- and, not wishy-washy laws.

The House and Senate are elected by the people and all of those members elected work for the The People and NOT for the corrupt, incompetent "President" or any president for that matter.

Democrats are hoping to underscore the sharp differences between them and Republicans.....

Many voters clearly see the sharp difference between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats reject the idea that U.S. citizens should be able to defend themselves. Democrats want to ban firearms. Democrats want to make felons of gun owners. Democrats want to "buy back" firearms that the government never owned. Democrats want to permit foreign gangbangers into the U.S.. Democrats want to hold inanimate objects responsible for murder. Democrats want to end gun violence while ignoring violence.

This same discussion has been taking place since before 1968. Democrats are afraid to push the progressive view of banning firearms because the voters will un-elect Democrats en masse. Again.

gun control

What about wackos control?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Moscow Mitchell will never concede the Senate is part of a separate branch of government, not a Trump bootlicker.

What a bunch of cowards. While mass shootings continue to happen in this country, this party of cowards waits and waits.....sniveling cowards, the lot of them. This party has the blood of many dead Americans on their hands. Absolutely pathetic.

Lmao! Not even close, but feel free to continue believing this is why gun control is effective in Hawaii and not Chicago.

There is nothing funny about pedophilia. What a disgusting attempt to obfuscate and deflect.

It’s pretty much on life support at this point.

and Medicaid expansion so tens of millions of Americans lose their coverage?

What about the tens of millions that can’t afford that junk?

Lmao! Not even close, but feel free to continue believing this is why gun control is effective in Hawaii and not Chicago.

Chicago? Beg your pardon??

And That’s just Labor Day. Thankfully Chicago is the safest city in America because of their gun control.

Who won the elections today? About time Dems start doing some bipartisan things.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

No, they care, that’s why they support the NRA, but Democrats would rather do whatever they can to take away our rights and undermine our 2nd amendment, it’ll never happen.

Democrats and most Republicans want common sense gun control, not a repeal of the 2nd Amendment. The hard core gun nutters will always try to frame the issue as black and white - all guns or no guns - an argument easily understood by a 2 year old...

I carried an assault weapon for 27 years - I've seen enemy combatants shot with one. Given the muzzle velocity and tumbling of a .223 round, there is no such thing as a flesh wound. If it hits your shoulder, your hole arm is coming off - and your lung collapses from the impact. Its good for what it does - kill the enemy. It should never be in civilian hands.

Many voters clearly see the sharp difference between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats reject the idea that U.S. citizens should be able to defend themselves. Democrats want to ban firearms. Pure BS scripted in Moscow - see how easy the Trumpers fall for it....

gun control

What about wackos control?

Agree - first stop the White House, or maybe we'd have better luck finding the wacko at 18th hole at Bedminster....

The NRA/GOP don't care about mass shootings of young kids at schools. They don't care gun homicide costs $229 billion every year. 10 years $2.29 trillion. Without more strict gun controls there will be no end to the deaths.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Run a Dem Presidential candidate on the platform of “take away everyone’s guns”. Oh wait, you have one and he is only getting 3-5% of Dem support.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Times are changing. The Obama activist judge who did a nationwide injunction for a second time was overruled again within 12 hours. Will he try again a 3rd time?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

About time Dems start doing some bipartisan things.

Like your boy in the Senate Massacre Mitch? He and the GOP are poster children for bipartisanship.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

You don’t have to do bipartisanship when you win. The losers have to come to you.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Must kill you Trump haters deep inside to know he is the reason why Republicans won the N.C. election.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Must kill you Trump haters deep inside to know he is the reason why Republicans won the N.C. election.

Why was there a special election?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Because Dems claimed the republican only won by “fraud”. So did it again and a brand new Republican beat the same guy by 5 times as much. Oops.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

You don’t have to do bipartisanship when you win. The losers have to come to you.

A district that's been red since 1963 with Trump winning by 11%. You won by 50.7% to 48.6%. Please continue doing what you're doing.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

According to Dems no such thing as “voter fraud” anyway, right?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Yep keeping on winning. That’s what we are doing. Winning in the courts too.

People hate Trump, right? No way this nobody should have won after Trump held a rally for him. Yet.....

Please continue doing what you're doing.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

According to Dems no such thing as “voter fraud” anyway, right?

There was voter fraud in North Carolina? Like, real voter fraud or the unsubstantiated kind?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

A district that's been red since 1963 with Trump winning by 11%. You won by 50.7% to 48.6%. Please continue doing what you're doing.

That’s not good for Democrats, seems like they need to maybe rethink about holding the House.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Bass:. That’s not good for Democrats,

Agreed. They voted for Trump +11% and this guy won by +2% in a red district. The gain is pretty bad news for Dems. Maybe in the next election things will get even worse for Dems if they lose by a half a percent.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Trump’s popularity helped a guy nobody had even heard of win by even more than the last guy won by.

oh so Dems now admit there is real voter fraud? Or is that just what you scream when Republicans win an election not once but twice with 2 different people?

Like, real voter fraud or the unsubstantiated kind?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Why are the Trump supporters and his voting base afraid of the democrats?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

zichi - Why are the Trump supporters and his voting base afraid of the democrats?

LOL. That doesn't seem to be the case, but Democrats, and Hillary worshippers, certainly like to think so.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Lmao! Not even close, but feel free to continue believing this is why gun control is effective in Hawaii and not Chicago.

I don't know what you are basing your opinion on but I can tell you, based on my lifetime experiences living in Hawaii, that the main reason gun controls work in Hawaii and not in Chicago is because...

Hawaii is a small Island, different politics, history etc..

Contemporary Hawaiian society is the product of a distinctly unique set of historical and cultural influences. This has resulted in a place where the daily lives of many, if not most, of its citizens are grounded in traditional cultural values adopted from the native Hawaiian culture as well as strong influences from Asia. For the most part, contemporary hawaiian society is collective in nature and the actions of one can impact the lives of those within their sphere. Couple that with an underriding "warrior" mentality that endorses dispute resolution through face to face physical violence and you get a situation where it's okay to get in a fist fight. Your friends and family will back you up and maybe even be proud of you. But pulling a gun to settle a difference is widely viewed as a sign of weakness and lack of respect for your family, for your community and for yourself.

I've only visited so I can't speak from personal experience. So I ask, is it the same in Chicago?

As an aside, It might surprise you to learn that there are more guns in private hands in Hawaii than the are people. There's plenty of guns in the Aloha State it's just we don't shoot each other all that much. It's a cultural thing.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

So reminds me of the guy and his constant habit of trying to tell us that what he thinks is best for everyone.,

That guy's name is Donny and he's the reason the GOP barely won in a district they've held for decades.

I don't know what you are basing your opinion on but I can tell you, based on my lifetime experiences living in Hawaii, that the main reason gun controls work in Hawaii and not in Chicago is because...

Facts as evidenced by studies, not personal anecdotes.

zichi - Without more strict gun controls there will be no end to the deaths.

You forgot to say the Democrat's magic words - "gun deaths". Violence deaths will continue. Bomb deaths, vehicle homicides, blunt force traumas, strangulation, poisonings, arsons, etc.. The best way to prevent, or reduce, murder, mayhem, and violence by individuals (not inanimate objects) is to identifying these monsters BEFORE they act out, and provide them with the help they need, or lock them away (jail, healthcare facility, or prison) until they are no longer a threat to society.

Democrats want to stop "gun" deaths by blaming inanimate objects for the actions of the twisted monsters who wield them.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Violence deaths will continue. Bomb deaths, vehicle homicides, blunt force traumas, strangulation, poisonings, arsons, etc..

Exactly. This is why you see the same rate of murder in Japan and other countries as America, even though there are no guns. Because the people want to KILL, and anyone who wants to kill with a GUN will NOT be satisfied until they have found another WEAPON and MURDERED someone with the other WEAPON instead of a GUN.

This is FACT. The murder rate is the SAME everywhere in the world as AMERICA, because it's not GUNS. How DARE you criticize GUNS. EVERYONE who murders with GUNS murders with other WEAPONS when they can't find GUNS.

oh so Dems now admit there is real voter fraud? Or is that just what you scream when Republicans win an election not once but twice with 2 different people?

The first time with the help of actual, verified voter fraud by the GOP. Sweet argument.

Someone doesn't understand the meaning of bipartisanship. You're almost as funny as Stranger, but in a far different way.

You don't understand what Medicaid is.
