Vatican, China sign landmark accord on appointing bishops

I am no fan of the Vatican or the Catholic hierarchy, but this seems like a total sell-out to me. I can see what's in it for Beijing, but I think the Pope is giving up much more than he might be gaining. I would think 5 true believers would be more valuable to him than 5 million party-approved believers. The global damage to the credibility of the Church would be devastating.
