In comments that could further annoy Trump, Ryan, said people should avoid using the malaria medicine hydroxychloroquine

That's definitely the end of the WHO funding from the USA if they say truthful things like that.

Pulling out of international organisations bus of course a classic step towards authoritarianism.

This week Trump threatened to withdraw from the WHO and permanently withhold funding.

I think WHO did mess up. But I also think Trump is using WHO, China and even some from his own staff to point blame for the rising US death counts and the damage to the economy caused by his slow response to dealing with the virus and the ongoing bungling done by his inept administration.

Pulling out of international organisations bus of course a classic step towards authoritarianism.

And another step towards ultra-nationalism.

"I said it time and time again that WHO calls for accountability more than anyone. It has to be done and when it's done it has to be a comprehensive one," Tedros said of the review, while declining to say when it would start.

If Tedros is truly calling for accountability, then Tedros should not object to providing a public explanation for why the WHO took so long to declare that Wuhan's bat virus was transferable from human to human, and that there was a pandemic. Months were lost, and many nations, nations which pay for the WHO's guidance, have lost so many souls.

Tedros should also be publicly accountable as to why the WHO refuses to recognize Taiwan.

Tedros should resign.

Months were lost,

The first death from Covid-19 happened on January 9th in China.

On January 22nd, the WHO put out a statement recognizing human to human transmission was happening.

How many "months" were lost exactly between January 9th and January 22nd?

Where?

Globally. That means in the world.

From the article: . "We are very concerned about rising cases in low and middle income countries."

It was about two weeks back in January but I remember wondering every day why the WHO were refusing to declare a pandemic, and my sense of frustration grew exponentially over their indecision and foot-dragging. What increased my irritation and made the situation more perplexing was (granted Tedros may not be a native speaker) the way he badly mispronounced many words in his ‘prepared’ speeches, suggesting that he does not actually know their meanings. The guy may feel he is doing his best, but I seriously had to question what their priorities really were, and what the H in WHO stands for.

Meanwhile Taiwan, non-WHO member, had already responded in late December last year.

Trump's pitiful attempts to deflect, dodge, and solely blame China and the WHO is pure fantasy...

US intel agencies briefed him in Dec and Jan - he did nothing...

The warnings came via the President’s Daily Briefing, a daily report controlled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that informs the president about significant geopolitical developments and potential security threats. The virus was mentioned in the PDB both through in-depth articles and smaller updates on the latest coronavirus news, and mentions of the coronavirus in the PDB became more frequent by mid-to-late January.

While ignoring the warnings, he was tweeting what a great job China was doing in Jan and praising his good friend President Xi;

Jan. 24: In a tweet, Trump praised China for its efforts to prevent the spread of the virus. "China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!"

More of the same in Feb including more praise for China and the WHO:

Feb. 24: In a tweet, Trump wrote, "The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart."

The demonization of China and the WHO is all just another Trump con-job...perhaps the only thing he can call himself an expert in....

And don't forget - he still in business with them having his clothing line made in Chinese sweatshop factories....

The virus came out of China and was knowingly being allowed to spread by the CCP-‘nuff said...

The virus came out of China and was knowingly being allowed to spread by the CCP-‘nuff said...

And what exactly did China achieve by allowing it to spread? Keep in mind, the virus killed thousands of their own and destroyed their economy as much as any western country.

The pandemic was finally declared on 11th of March while Tedros had remained reluctant.

Meanwhile Taiwan, non-WHO member, had already responded in late December last year.

Those two facts have nothing to do with each other. Taiwan enacted inspections for travelers coming from Wuhan on December 31st, which was a very good preventive measure, but at that point the virus was far from being even in the epidemic state (the first death had not happened yet), and it also didn't keep cases from happening in the country. Would you have liked the WHO to declare what was happening in Wuhan a global pandemic before the first death even happened? How would they (or you) have justified that?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

If the WHO is to regain any credibility, they MUST recognize Taiwan as a full member of the organization, effective immediately.

Its a scandal that Taiwan - the most successful nation in dealing with Covid-19 - is not given a seat on the WHO to direct and lead the world's response to this crisis. One thing is very clear : this pandemic is going to get far, far worse than now. We haven't seen anything yet.

Tedros said he was committed to accountability and would carry out a review into the response to the pandemic. Such a review was demanded by member states in a resolution this week that was passed by consensus, although the United States expressed reservations about some elements of it.

"I said it time and time again that WHO calls for accountability more than anyone. It has to be done and when it's done it has to be a comprehensive one," Tedros said of the review, while declining to say when it would start.

So Tedros going to investigate Tedros and his cohorts in the CCP?

They will review what happened and more bribes be handed over while they pat each other on the back.

There should be a complete independent investigation carried out into this virus, its spread, its mishandling, the CCP and The who and make WHO ever was responible accountable !

The they should be given a fair trial at the Hague if it is shown they have been corrupt or acted carelessly and endangered lives of innocent people throughout the world.

Then we can extract compensation from those responsible !

Seems to me that you already decided "they" were guilty. (without any proof of course)

Umm no do you struggle with comprehension ? they should be given a fair trial at the Hague if it is shown they have been corrupt or acted carelessly and endangered lives of innocent people throughout the world

The vocabulary you use and your invoking the Hague (where war criminals are judged) clearly indicates that your opinion on the matter is already settled. Why even deny it?

Wow. Contrary to what people want to believe, WHO is an organization that does try for the greater good concerning world health. Those who want to belittle or make them out as criminals have an agenda based on emotion, bias and misinformation.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

sunfunbun where would some one accused of crimes against humanity be tried then?

Some one in charge of a country or world organisation found to have endangered millions of lives by neglect or wilful actions, where is the appropriate place for them to have a fair trial , if it was found to be the case during this review or investigation. Lets just say hypothetically the director of the WHO and/or the leader of the ccp .

Keep in mind there is something in the region of 122 countries calling for an independent inquiry into how things were handled.

@Bjorn

Are you serious or joking?

Without knowing it, it is quite difficult to give you a sound reply.

It sounds like you are oblivious to the corruption of the WHO by the CCP. What media do you get your news from?

Yes, the World Health Organization, an organization full of doctors, and literally dedicated to the health of the world, is corrupt.

Jesus, the right has gone beyond the pale. Next thing you'll be saying we need to get rid of the police because they are corrupt.

Yeah, because that will make things better.

wipeout - Such a declaration is only made when the evidence clearly indicates it.

You can donate as much money to the WHO as you chose.

Even Tedros is saying that there should be an investigation into the WHO's response. The evidence clearly indicates an investigation should take place.
