I don't see why this is acceptable anyway, from a catholic perspective. What is the point of confession if you're doing it without any consequences? It's a pointless get-out-of-jail-free card. Why does avoiding penalty in this life also lead to avoiding penalty in the next life, if that's what you believe?
Can anyone explain the logic to me? Why does confession exist and why does it need to be confidential to be effective?

Having learned the actual history of confession (some 800yrs) I must say it is not a nice History. But would be too long to go intohere.
In short it started as a money making scheme for the Church, which upset the Monarchs.
Said that Protestant don't have Confession (they confess during Prayer) which is also due to different roles for priests.
Not sure how other Abrahamic religions deal with it, AFAIK it is only Catholics.
