Would you really consider having kids while you are kidnapped? If you were in danger of being killed, giving birth to babies in such a situation seems unbelievable, ridiculously irresponsible and the last thing on your mind. This guy seems very dodgy and, as the article mentions, was previously married to the wife of a Guantanamo Bay inmate.....

He took his pregnant wife to Afghanistan 'backpacking' butos now saying they were helping people there. He sounds like a fantasist and his wife and children paid the price for his self absorption.

Would you be backpacking in Afghanistan in the first place? Probably not. So trying to attribute rational based on what you would think/do to this guy probably isn't going to be that accurate. He likely thinks about life in quite a different way than you (and I for that matter).

A brave pacifist goes off to do humanitarian work in a dangerous place. His wife is raped, his daughter killed and still the online juries have already convicted him.

We're not sure what it is, your honor, it might be the beard or the pacifism, or the wanting to help people. Whatever it is; he must be guilty. Of something.

He has said and done all the wrong things so far, so if he wants to be taken seriously by the world community then the both of them need to sound a little more plausible, if only for the sake of their kids.
