We're going to do the same thing, and government comes to a halt, and I would blame them.

Ha ha! Two points: government has been at a halt for a prolonged period because the Republican party couldn't agree with itself; and Trump will never take responsibility for anything - this is simply preemptive blame.

and government comes to a halt, and I would blame them," Trump said

How many times has Trump threatened to shut government down?

It's clear he's cracking under the pressure he's created himself. Take Truman's advice: 'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen'.

And also 'The buck stops here'. And 'here' doesn't mean your bank account, nor your family member's.

Let's make America great again. Hope they rip him apart.

So how many Dems who got elected after saying they wouldn’t vote for Pelosi for Speaker....will vote for Pelosi as speaker?

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

I think it's time for Pelosi and Schumer to stand down, having them to carry on until the 2020 elections does not fare well for the Democratic party. Now is the time for the Democrats party to rebuild itself, new faces and new ideas.

Deflect! Deflect! Deflect!

Can't wait for the whining from the right when the left starts using the right's tactics against it.

Look, Republicans no longer have total control of the government. We have absolute proof that Trumpism is a failure. Democrats now have the power of the subpoena. Even if nothing else, we don't have Midnight Run Nunes running any 'investigations'. Cheer up, Dems, you won!

I agree. The Democratic Party hierarchy must allow younger people into its power structure and allow them to start setting agendas. It's their future.

I'm not really a big fan of Pelosi, but I give her credit for this:

"We have a constitutional responsibility for oversight,"

Straight out of the GOP playbook, the exact same words the GOP uses to justify endless investigations of their own. She made me chuckle with that one.

The GOP opened up Pandora's Box with "investigation oversight." Now it's the Dems turn, if they choose, to start up investigations just to suppoena information that can be selectively released publicaly to damage the GOP.

And all of us Democtrats can just sit back and say, "Well, oversight is their job and they take it seriously."

Look, Republicans no longer have total control of the government.

That’s ok, they’re now in a much stronger position politically because now the burden is on the Dem run House, good luck.

We have absolute proof that Trumpism is a failure.

If so, then why wasn’t it a blue wave? Why did Trump lose less seats than Obama who lost 63 in the House and 6 in the Senate, but Trump gained 3 in the Senate and was still able to hold seats in the House from allowing the Dems to have an even bigger majority. Phew!

Democrats now have the power of the subpoena.

And guess what, that’s not gonna go very far especially with this new AG and what the new lawyer she’s going to beef himself up with.

Even if nothing else, we don't have Midnight Run Nunes running any 'investigations'. Cheer up, Dems, you won!

Well, it was a good night for both sides that’s for sure.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Now that because of too brain farts yesterday the Dems actually have a majority in the House, we're going to need to pursue aggressive House oversight in order to limit the damage to the country until the Republicans take it back in two years.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

LOL! Dump is going to get his tax returns requested! With Dems controlling the House, there is no way that Dump can stop it. Ha Ha!

The new House should be receiving Mueller's report soon. It will be interesting!

You would “THINK” that consatives would imagine how all of this power grabbing and whining about having to share power ends. History is replete with examples of kings and presidents (look at Africa or Asia or Russia) and it always ends the same. Collapse of that society. As these conservative posters shake their fists, and yell and scream about liberals, and then (next year gradually phase in new “laws” which “their” conservative Supreme Court will rubber stamp, I can say that the land of freedom will be anything than that. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if there were concentration camps for liberals by the end of next year, with that “pesky” CNN reporter Jim Acousta being the first one interned. Funny thing, without CNN giving endless and uncritical coverage of Trump (instead of ignoring him like they did with Sanders), Trump would have never been president. And this is their thanks!

Democrats ready to pursue aggressive Trump oversight: Pelosi

In other words, pursue an aggressive partisan obstructionist agenda and destroy the Trump Presidency, at the expense of dividing and destroying the country. The Democrats are intent on clipping Trump's wings because they have none.

expected to lead investigations into Trump's long-hidden tax returns

What is this fascination over President Trump's tax returns? If he were guilty of tax fraud of any kind, the IRS would have publicly announced any wrongdoings when candidate Trump announced he was running for president. Also, if there were fraud, the omnipresent "anonymous source" would have exposed it long ago.

Ever the optimist. You are able to come up with every excuse in the book to spin something to make it look like a win for the repugs. It all rings hallow because of the double-standards you embrace.

No one is expecting fraud. We’re looking to find out who owns him financially. If it’s found that his finances are beholden to Russia and other countries with anti-American interests, it will give the contextual backdrop against which his actions towards those countries can be evaluated.

This is something all Americans should be interested in. How could any person who wants the best for their country encourage a situation in which the president may have conflicts that place his personal interests above that of the country he is supposed to be leading. Promoting a situation that would cover this up is not just stupid, it’s acrually against the interests of America. Anyone who thinks that trumps tax returns are not important can stop pretending to be a patriot. They are only trumpets.

I have a funny feeling that, despite everything, Pelosi and Trump will actually be able to work together on some projects. A large infrastructure project, for example, or trade policy, both spring to mind. They are both of a similar age and social status, something that scores big with Trump. It'll be interesting to see if Pelosi can keep the young turks in her party at bay long enough to reclaim her speakership.

Atilla: That would be great. However, it seems to me that Trump's hyperpartisanship and Pelosi's memory of Trump attacking her won't allow this scenario. Pelosi isn't Twed Cruz, which is to say she probably won't fawn over Trump after Trump's attacked her in a childish way.

Yep, just like the repugs did to obama. Did you have an issue with that?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The people voted them into the House, so people want them in the House to serve as checks & balances. People don't want rubber-stamps and blank checks

Trump has to learn to work well with others now, if he wants to pass his agenda thru Congress. That means compromise

Since the House controls the purse and budget of the government, this likely means no more tax cuts without getting closer to a more balanced budget (the US budget deficit ballooned 18% to over $800 Billion, after having shrunk to under $500 Billion in recent years)

Getting Trump's tax returns is the biggest priority for the Democrats, not infrastructure, not wages, not the looming threat from China, not drug OD's, not even health care. Trump's tax returns. That's what Democrats really want. LOL.

Why does it bother you so much that they are doing things the way you guys do instead of the way they used to do it? Are you worried that now the country is left with neither party caring about the people anymore?

The tax returns will be fun just for the exposure and it’s good to have oversight, But it won’t change much in terms of public opinion. Trump’s taxes could show he’s dodged taxes for the last 20 years and his base will stay silent. Removing your spine is a requirement for being a Trump fan.

True. They don't actually care about America, only about Trump.

But at least this exposes these people for the anti-american hypocrites they are.

During my 33-year military service and subsequent 20 years in the Department of Defense, I've never considered myself to be a "patriot," I am an American who loves his country. Also, I have been an Independent voter since 1956. I've voted for Democrats, Republicans and third party candidates. After elections, I have always supported the winning candidate, even if I didn't voted for him\her, and always hoped that the newly elected official would do what's best for my community, state and country. I try to avoid political arguments, mainly because it never ceases to amaze me how quickly some Democrats and Republicans will resort to name-calling and character assassination when someone disagrees with their opinions or have personal views that are different from theirs.

As far as the President's tax forms are concerned, considering recent incidents of confidential documents being made public, I personally believe that if there are documents which show fraud, they would have been leaked long ago. However, if an investigation is conducted, and it's found he submitted fraudulent tax reports, I won't commit seppuku, but it'll certainly look very bad for past and present IRS tax enforcement officials.

"Trump’s taxes could show he’s dodged taxes for the last 20 years and his base will stay silent."

If he dodged them illegally, which is doubtful, then no, we'll call him out on that. If he dodged them legally like everyone else in the country endeavors to do being as how the government wastes so much of our tax money, he gets two scoops of ice cream.

"Removing your spine is a requirement for being a Trump fan."

No, but having common sense is.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I doubt Trump has dodged any taxes. He likely just used a lot of lawyers and creative accounting to get out of paying tax legally. But that's mostly irrelevant. You can't morally condemn a guy for doing what the law entitles him to do. You can criticize morons who would elect him even with that, but you can't condemn him.

No, the bigger question is who owns Trump financially. That's what the tax returns will reveal, and once we have that, it will paint the context within which his actions as president have taken place. Not that it will matter to the morons though, they'll still support him even once they find out he's owned by Russia and Saudi Arabia.
