Both nations refusing to shut the Kim Jong Un regime down. The regime that they created. They really need to get serious if they honestly want to ensure no military response.

"Moscow has called and continues to call on the parties involved in the conflict and on those who have anything to do with this issue to exercise restraint and to avoid any steps that would only worsen the situation."

But they continue to provide oil to NK from Russian ports.

China hopes all sides do nothing to irritate each other or worsen the problem and speak and act cautiously, she told a daily news briefing.

90% of NK's trade is with China. Token actions so far.

5 ( +16 / -11 )

NK will soon be called The North Korean American territory.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

I thought Trump was supposed to be the ultimate deal maker??... haven't seen anything to justify this claim since he came to power - just bellicose amateur hour bluster....

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Trump and the Republican's bungling have shown why Putin and his oligarchs had their paid keyboard brigade oppose Clinton's election, and to this day continue to try to undermine US institutions. They knew Trump was inept and that they could continue to gain power having him in office.

But as long as Trump's base can get more and ever more powerful weapons to add to their private arsenals, they won't care that the US is the laughingstock of the world, and that by involving itself in ongoing losing military involvements worldwide and spending trillions to do so, its days as a world power are rapidly slipping away.

1 ( +10 / -9 )

Firstly Putin does not want a regime change in NK. Secondly Trump and crazy Kim have been trading insults as far as I can see and for a 70 year old man that is pretty pathetic. Trump needs to learn diplomacy

7 ( +13 / -6 )

It is an alarming and complex problem no matter whom might be more right or wrong. It is evident that some of the sanction placed on N.K. have caused some parts of the problem to be resolved, but a final solution will need to be discussed by not just American's or resolved by American's, but by other nations involved since technically they are all linked in multiple way's.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Perhaps instead of playing "Hail to the Chief" when our president enters a room, the Marine Band could play "If I only had a brain."

3 ( +9 / -6 )

So you,d prefer to have millions die in a potential " military response " conflict on Korean Peninsula rather than have NK accepted into the nuclear club and negotiate with them based on that reality ( unpleasant as it may be ) . NK have stated repeatedly that they want to have nukes as a deterrent to potential US " regime change , hey you need some freedom over there " operation, not to launch the first attack. Btw, it's not Russia and China that need to " get serious" they have been pushing for restraint and negotiations continuously to de escalate the crisis. Its your Donald that needs to get serious and stop talking like a 10 year old on an international stage just to outdo Kimbo over there.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Both nations refusing to shut the Kim Jong Un regime down. The regime that they created. They really need to get serious if they honestly want to ensure no military response.

Exactly! 100% correct! Russia and China, particularly China are the biggest problem in all of this, they could call NK to stop from ratcheting the rhetoric.

Trump and the Republican's bungling have shown why Putin and his oligarchs had their paid keyboard brigade oppose Clinton's election, and to this day continue to try to undermine US institutions. They knew Trump was inept and that they could continue to gain power having him in office.

Hillary didn't visit Wisconsin not one single time, not that's inept and shows how incompetent the woman really is. Dodged that bullet.

But as long as Trump's base can get more and ever more powerful weapons to add to their private arsenals, they won't care that the US is the laughingstock of the world,

Why would they care, they're not Kindergarten kids craving attention and acceptance, the last president was ineffective and loved the attention, Trump's base just want a president that puts America first and NOT the world and all the name calling from the left is not going to change that. Kudos.

and that by involving itself in ongoing losing military involvements worldwide and spending trillions to do so, its days as a world power are rapidly slipping away.

So if we spend trillions on entitlements that's ok?

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

Trump's clearly talking about a massive military strike. When Idiot makes up his mind to do something, he generally does it a few days later, and it's ALWAYS bad. This looks worse than bad.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

China and Russia never call for NK to restrain itself. China and Russia have no class and no credibility

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

And since when has Putin been the sane voice in any conflict the US should listen too. Putin's pawns have been around Trunp since his campaign does before he was elected as per the information warfare expert Molly Mc Kew. We have Bannon, Gorka, Manafort and Kellyanne Conway all paid for by Putin and let us not forget the hacking of cyber defense intel, emails and nuclear power plants. The spreading of propaganda on social thanks Putin

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Mattis and Trump seem to be playing good cop/bad cop, with Mattis hinting, "Dude's unhinged enough pull your card, man! Put down those nukes before he does something really crazy!"

Problem with the good cop/bad cop scenario, though, is that the bad cop has to not actually be crazy, has to know his role and where to draw the line. Does Trump? Honestly no one know, and that's what's causing even members of his own cabinet sleepless nights.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Not to mention Putin's "restraint" in Crimea and Ukraine. When you look at what China and Russia have been doing to "constructively" stop NK from threatening to attack Japan, the US, SK, you have to wonder who's fooling whom.

Not that Trump shouldn't be a little more subtle. But Un can't have any misconceptions about what would happen if he were to attack anybody.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

yes, hey Russia please "restrain" yourself from invading Afghanistan, Crimea and Ukraine! China please "restrain" yourself from running over your own citizens with tanks at Tianemen square.

The perfect two nations to preach restraint!

2 ( +8 / -6 )

NK has not attacked anyone they are missile testing and mouthing off to Trump/Abe mouthing off. Some other crazy must be whispering in Trumps ears (Kellyanne). Because plays both sides in conflicts through his pawns. They are there to destablize and cause anarchy as per the US information warfare expert Molly Mc Kew. She fingers Kellyanne Conway on August 3rd on her twitter page as a threat to US national security

2 ( +5 / -3 )

I meant Putin is playing both sides in this conflict with NK.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Hello OsasanAmerican, I wanted to thank you for our previous conversation, your information was factual and accurate but again, I respectfully disagree on which path to take. While it appears diplomacy has failed in regards to NK, there won't be any military solution that doesn't end in tragic lose of lives by those who participate and maybe even those who don't. SK and Japan will most likely be targeted if the US attacks NK, we are simply, easier targets.

Lets give the sanctions China is ready to implement a chance. Diplomacy should never be off the table, the alternative would be disastrous!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Just peeped at Reuters top news Why is Russia giving a review of the Pentagon's security software??? My guess is they have hacked it or tried too.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Russia cautioning caution regarding Trump? They should have thought of that before they made him President.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Coming from Russia who invaded and annexed the Crimea, and China who is militarizing the SC Sea and pretending they aren't involved. Can these comically villainous "powers" get any more hypocritical and ridiculous? Russia and China should be not only ignored but eliminated from the UNSC as they contribute less than nothing to this world and always have.

It is now 100% clear that China and Russia are not only hoping, but actively contributing to see NK launch a few thermo nukes at the US and extinguish a few hundred million people so their relative global positions are unilaterally strengthened.

An unstable NK gets eliminated on their border so they don't have to deal with it, their regional strength is multiplied heavily as they take a leading role in reconstruction on the Korean peninsula, plus America is severely weakened from taking massive home losses from nukes and massive military losses in the NK war.

You can bet your life China and Russia are cheering on NK behind the scenes, as every possible scenario strengthens them and weakens America

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Both nations refusing to shut the Kim Jong Un regime down. The regime that they created. They really need to get serious if they honestly want to ensure no military response.

How are they supposed to shut down the regime? If they shout their mouth and cause issues like the US and Japan have been doing, they will just become another country that NK threatens. I think both China and Russia are playing it smarter here.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

OssanAmerican

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld served on the board of a Swiss company that in 2000 sold light water nuclear reactors to the government of North Korea, which critics?including Pentagon hardliners?say could be used to produce nuclear weapons.

There are others besides China & Russia who are also responsible for this mess.

Its one thing to have ICBM's but the U.S. is directly responsible for some of NK's nuclear advancements, which is the real threat!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

On Molly Mc Kew twitter page she says there is a radioactive cloud over Germany and that it looks like it came from Russia. Now what did Europe do to piss Putin off

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

China and Russia have no class and no credibility "

As opposed to Donald ? they have tons of it.

yes, hey Russia please "restrain" yourself from invading Afghanistan, Crimea and Ukraine

Oh, not enough space to list them all here ....i get it.

Trump talks about 25 years of talks with NK have availed nothing but how old is Kim Jong Un??? What?? 30 at the most. NK has a new leader and diplomacy should be new. Or is Trump senile and sees and old man because I see a young new leader governing NK

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

China and Russia have no class and no credibility

Yes, you've said that previously. I intially thought your were referring to Putin and his administration and Xi and his lot. But no, it appears you mean the entire countries, their peoples and cultures.

Stunning ignorance.

China and Russian leaders are (for a change) correct to call for restraint. It's too volatile a situation to continue with the rhetoric being spouted by Trump and Kim.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

OssanAmerica: "Both nations refusing to shut the Kim Jong Un regime down. The regime that they created."

Actually, if you're going to argue that kind of nonsense, then it is Japan that created North Korea. So, look no further than your own backyard.

"They really need to get serious if they honestly want to ensure no military response."

It's not China and Russia's job to ensure no military response when the US is set on it, and Japan backs them. You don't point a gun at someone and say to someone else, "It's your responsibility to stop them from being shot." You lower the gun.

Yes, hey America please restrain yourself from invading Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya etc.! It's strange that Americans with their track record consider themselves morally superior and think they have moral right to lecture others on international law.

Don't forget that NK stubbornes with its nuke / missile program is motivated by the belief that nukes are the only guarantee against US aggression. Saddam and Qaddafi stopped their nuke programs in exchange for Western promises of security. What happened to them? Kim remembers it very clearly and does not want to repeat their fate. Trump now reaps what previous US administrations sowed.

Russia and China are voices of reason here. With all that bluster, profanities and threats that Kim and Trump heaped on each other lately the situation is too close to the point when further threats stop to be taken seriously, when it is too close to the "stop talking and just do it" threshold.

Russia, China call for restraint after Trump's comment on N Korea

Russia and China can call for restraints against US military action, while they themselves thumb their noses and ignores similar calls while pursuing their own expansionist campaigns.

Don't forget that NK stubbornes with its nuke / missile program is motivated by the belief that nukes are the only guarantee against US aggression

NK have stated repeatedly that they want to have nukes as a deterrent to potential US " regime change ,

That's not the primary reason NK has developed nuclear weapons and missile capabilities.

Now armed with thermonuclear and ICBM missile capabilities, Kim is in a better negotiation position than previous NK leaders to frighten and force the US and UN to negotiations in Pyongyong and appease to NK's terms.

You all forget that the DPRK's goals have always been a peace treaty to replace the truce under terms that would demand the removal of U.S. forces out of the Korean Peninsula, surrender of South Korea to North Korea,  reunification under DPRK regime.

Trump talks about 25 years of talks with NK have availed nothing but how old is Kim Jong Un??? What?? 30 at the most. NK has a new leader and diplomacy should be new.

Kim Jong-un is dedicated to carrying out the goals his father and grandfather has followed since the formation of DPRK.  Kim has stated that NK will never agree to giving up its nuclear and missile programs, nor will they accept a reunification on anything other than DPRK terms.

So you,d prefer to have millions die in a potential " military response " conflict on Korean Peninsula rather than have NK accepted into the nuclear club and negotiate with them based on that reality ( unpleasant as it may be )

Marcelito, et al,  do you prefer to have appeasement to terms that requires South Korea surrendering to NK, agreeing to a reunification of the two Koreas under the brutal totalitarian DPRK regime?

Is it your preference to have the South Korean people surrender their sovereignty and freedoms and be forced to live under a brutal totalitarian regime?

Considering you all are thousands of miles away from South Korea, and not being the ones threatened to accept reunification under brutal totalitarian regime, it's easy to agree to appeasement to NK terms is the preferred solution.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

And a pre-emptive strike is bravery? Advocating a conflict with innumerable casualties from the safety of thousands of miles away is courageous?

As if both countries really give a rats....anyway, for China and Russia keeping Kim in power and in the region preserves the status quo for them, it’s not like they are extremely worried and from the kindness of their hearts want to solve this conflict because they’re worried about an outbreak. China and Russia both have their national interests at heart, nothing more.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@Halwick

That's not the primary reason NK has developed nuclear weapons and missile capabilities

Correct. But the fates of Saddam and Qaddafi are now the primary reason why Kim will never surrender his nukes. He is ready to starve his people to death in order to get operational nukes as the only deterrent against US aggression. And the US aggressions against Iraq and Libya - countries that agreed with the US to scrap their nuke programs - amply justify his paranoia.

surrender of South Korea to North Korea,  reunification under DPRK regime

Not correct. While unification rhetoric is officially adopted by both Koreas, neither of them actually wants a real unification. The South is afraid of colossal material cost of unification it will have to bear, the Nortern party cadres do not want the unification because there will be no place for them in the elite of a new, united Korea.

do you prefer to have appeasement to terms that requires South Korea surrendering to NK

The main concern of Kim is survival of his regime, not the conquest of South with its strong army and rather hostile populace. Kim wants to keep the status quo. And do you prefer a big war to the status quo?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

At the end of the day, I will put my house up when it comes down to the US military might. No second thoughts

Did I say anything or the sort? What I am saying, and it should be pretty clear from the above, is that China and Russia need to start taking responsibility for their little Frankenstein monster and stop protecting NK. There's no reason that they had to water down the sanctions other than to maintain the a ti-U.S. posture. Neither China nor Russia are idiots, they know that a more cooperative regime in NK would serve their purposes while not causing unnecessary problems. Failure to do so may eventually result in NK actually firing an ICBM on US territory, and the probability of a military response by the US to that is about 100%. Something both China and Russia realize.

Lets give the sanctions China is ready to implement a chance. Diplomacy should never be off the table, the alternative would be disastrous!

Both China and Russia need to openly denounce NK's nuclear and missile program. Directly at North Korea. No more of this telling "everyone" to calm down. They need to forget about continuing to defend NK by watering down UN sanctions. The price is a potential military action. Don't tell me about the "millions of casualties", we all know this. But if Kim Jong Un fires a missile that lands on, possibly even near, U.S. territory, Trump will have no alternative but to respond militarily. Failure to do so would be complete political suicide. So China and Russia need to accept this reality and act accordingly rather than their usual two faced behavior.

^Fixed it for you.

Want to explain why? I presume you are fully aware that North Korea was created by the USSR, that Kim Il Song was a solider in the Soviet Red Army, that North Korea crossed the 38th Parallel unprovoked in June 1950 starting the Korean War, that UN Command had defeated and pushed the NK troops back to NK when China invaded by crossing the Yalu, pushing the UN troops back to the 38th Parallel.

So how did the United States "create" North Korea? Without Chinese and Soviet backing, there would have been no "North" Korea after 1951. And the Republic of Korea would have encompassed the entire Korean Peninsula.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

PTownsendToday  06:58 am JST

Do you think it was anyone else? NK wouldn't even exist today if not for Russia and China.

Japan's defeat in the Pacific War?

Technically correct. Except that Imperial Japan didn't WANT to be defeated, whereas the USSR and PROC WANTED North Korea to exist.

So for the last time - CHINA CAN STOP NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR AND MISSILE PROGRAM RIGHT NOW.

Japan is protected by the US-Japan Mutual Defense Treaty and covered by the U.S. Nuclear Umbrella. No country dares to attack Japan for fear of retaliation by the U.S. And Japan has neither the need nor desire to develop and maintain a nuclear arsenal and missile delivery capability.

North Korea is already protected by a Defense Treaty with China going back to 1961, wherein China will protect North Korea from attack. All they have to do is offer North Korea their Nuclear Umbrella. Now no country will ever attack North Korea, and every argument that North Korea has to pursue their nuclear and missile development goes flying out the window.

China is in a position to prevent a military conflict and bring peace and stability to the Korean Peninsula.

"Then you should agree to give new sanctions a chance and deplomacy never be taken off the table."

Whatva load of garbage! NK never had any true intention of solidifying anything with the US, the hatred for the US and Japan run so deep, there is nothing that would have mended the relationship then and even now. The US didn’t cause the NK over the last 25 years to test ballistic missiles and to proliferate.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

The US didn’t cause the NK over the last 25 years to test ballistic missiles and to proliferate.

Well, actually it did. Neither Clinton (even though talks were on the cards) or Bush gave much hope. Especially Dubya's "axis of evil" speech which to the isolated and paranoid leadership of DPRK was yet more proof that the US (in conjunction with the "traitors" in Seoul) was seeking the destruction of the North.

And now, of course, Washington's weasel words are done and they are openly calling for the North's destruction. Which will make Pyongyang feel vindicated.

You couldn't make this up. Not even you.

Especially Dubya's "axis of evil" speech which to the isolated and paranoid leadership of DPRK was yet more proof that the US (in conjunction with the "traitors" in Seoul) was seeking the destruction of the North.

Oh, please, Kim Jong Il always wanted one thing from the US as well as the international community and that was food and aid, nothing more, the North never wanted to unify under a democratized SK, they never had ANY true intentions on returning the Japanese hostages they kidnapped, this was a dog and pony show to give the illusion that NK wanted serious and sincere dialogue with the US. The one thing in NK you will never see are hungry or malnourished NK soldiers, they need to be clothed and well fed, as for the people, entirely different story.

And now, of course, Washington's weasel words are done and they are openly calling for the North's destruction.

Kim could make this so much easier, but alas.....

Alas, Trump is on full scale countdown to conflict. How can the citizens be protected from him?

Faileir to do so would be complete political suicide. So China and Russia need to accept this reality and act accordingly rather than their usual two faced behavior.

"Im still not really sure what you mean by this statement. As for being two faced, please show me a politician that isn't."

Who wants to start a war? Everything I've pointed out is a means to avert war. As stated, China can end NK's nuclear and missile program. Please read carefully.

"As I've said several times before but you'll never acknowledge, Donald Rumsfeld already sold nuclear technology to NK, this action has directly lead to NK's advancement of making a nuclear bomb. Now that the cat is out of the bag, no sanctions can completely stop NK, it can only slow them down. As for who wants a war, YOU already stated that diplomacy was and is a complete waist of time, the only other options are sanctions or military actions, since sanctions alone can't work, the only thing you appear to offer is the threat of war. If I'm wrong, please clarify how sanctions alone, will stop NK dead in their tracks."

The only thing keeping Kim Jung Un alive is his missile program and the threats to retaliate against a US-lead regime change, undeclared Pearl Harbor-like attack on North Korea by the buffoon in the White House.

I think Trump is going to do it. He knows the average American loves war and attacking another country for calling you names is just dandy. His popularity will skyrocket as the nation of 12 year olds will think they're watching a movie.

Americans will be crying with joy at another good war. Salute the flag, play the anthem, shed tears of joy that their sons are being sent off to war.

Hey, why not attack Iraq again while they're at it?

So what if there about 200,000 South Korean casualties from conventional artillery bombardment of Seoul set to be released on a trip wire just in case someone actually did attack North Korea. That's the bargaining power they have to such a conflict.

They're only Koreans anyway. They don't value their lives like Americans do (that was what General Westmoreland said about Vietnamese people. It was ok to slaughter them en mass since they didn't value their lives like American boys).

Ah I love the smell of radiation and artillery rounds in the morning.

Likewise - the US needs to stop threatening the DPRK

I agree as soon as they NOKOS stop firing their missiles over Japan, they don’t, they stop the pursuit of nukes, Kim can keep his nation.

As will many cities in the US and our cities here in this region.

By whom?

Alas, Kim is on full scale countdown to conflict. How can the citizens be protected from him?

Stop the proliferation, stop firing missiles into the Sea of Japan and we are good to go.

. Do you honostly believe that N. Korea being allowed to obtain Nuclear warhead material and delivery system is in the best interest to world peace in the Asian Region,

You missed his point. He didn't say NK nuclear proliferation was to the benefit of the world. He claimed its to the benefit of NK.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov? Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying? Tweedledum & Tweedledee. Who are these people? Factotums? Janitors? Might as well report "anonymous sources".

The fake news media once again tries to preach to its choir what is clearly a partisan, leftist opinion as "news".

It does get the leftist worked up and excited. More proof that their "gal" lost to an "idiot", because of (...wait for it) the woman did not campaign in the rust belt states! So that "idiot" is now President. Cry me a river! Man up already!

Let President Trump deal with this and have him shut the little fat guy up for good - without even firing a shot!

The US can not stop North Korea's nuclear and missile development. NK has maintained that those are NON NEGOTIABLE. So there is no basis for discussion and diplomacy.

Read my above post wherein a solution exists that is neither diplomacy, sanctions or war. Perhaps you can answer why China will not offer this solution to NK.

CHINA CAN STOP NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR AND MISSILE PROGRAM RIGHT NOW.

The US is in the position to prevent a war by not starting one.

Do it. Go on do it. All this waiting is agonizing, torturous, just do it. Hmm.. wait, maybe this is a grounds upon which I can sue the US Administration... ?

And I guess, whilst I'm suing the US Government, I can also sell Real-Estate in the Afterlife to anyone so concerned about protecting their standard of non-existence. ;-)

No... I'm not a member of Donald Trump's extended family... are you telling me they've already cornered the Market in the afterlife's "un"-real-estate ?!

"That factual statement and action doesn't offer any solution to the problem, it fact it shows how the US allowed the problem to grow to what it is today. They created the problem, they get the desired reaction and now they offer their desired "solution", with hidden agenda's."

NK will not be any safer unless they change their coarse of action and same goes for any other country making poor choices."

If North Korea were protected by China's nuclear umbrella, they would have no reason to pursue their own nuclear and missile development program. That would be a change in their course of action. One that is being sought by the US and it's allies. Their "Songun" policy could be abandoned and resources directed toward building the country rather than perpetually fighting a nonexistent war.

"You don't know that for sure, no one truly knows Kim's motives and deepest thoughts. Your assuming that his every action is of sound judgement or only for the best interest of his countrymen. Often people of great power, only serve that of self interest."

That would be a change in their course of action.

"Another assumption."

One that is being sought by the US and it's allies.

"Is the US asking China to put NK under its nuclear umbrella?"

Their "Songun" policy could be abandoned and resources directed toward building the country rather than perpetually fighting a nonexistent war.

"I agree that should be the ultimate goal but I fear to many players are using this mess to further and achieve their own agenda's."

If you can't control your little brat, you should let Trump give it a go.  Maybe he can scratch and solve the problem.
