The results of 2016 referendum, the parliamentary after effects of a 2017 conservative election campaign,so appallingly incompetently mismanaged. Theresa May's dysfunctional leadership producing an agreement/treaty paragraph after paragraph would legalistically bind UK to EU customs rules and regulations indefinitely without any means of negotiation to challenge future terms and conditions. These are the issues to be addressed.

Add in a Jeremy Corbyn lead opposition, Bexit policy changes on a day to day basis dependent on which member of his shadow cabinet is making a statement.

This whole sad and sorry Conservative leadership champaign, typified in the Channel 4 debate, a toe curling humiliation, speaker after speaker bumbling embarrassingly unable or unwilling to acknowledge the overriding fact is their political ineptitude brought the country to this sorry situation. .

Has democracy ever seen a worse time since it was adopted by a young America? The two leading proponents of democracy in this world, Great Britain and the US, are dramatically demonstrating how pathetic it can be when the voters don't have a clue (and maybe don't even care) about what they are doing. How did the planets align to give us Brexit and Trump all at the same time? Pathetic, just pathetic.

Yep. And Leicester City winning the Premier League....

This was not a great exercise in democracy. B-list Tories bickering on live TV with each trying look the least cynical and least objectionable with the most cynical and most objectionable candidate watching at home because his handlers knew he was very likely to make a complete arse of himself on live TV.

Shower of...

The answer is in your question I.e clueless/gullible voters tend to elect idiots, charlatans etc. This is the result of decades of dumbed-down education, programs, misinformation etc in both the us and uk (old Europe and other countries aren't far behind, they’re getting there, it's inevitable.)

Not sure most ppl/countries see gb & the us as the 2 'leading democracies' tbh. (old Europe, Oz, Canada, nz, India and a few other nations have their own model of democracy and it's been working ok).

Ah yes. It is so much preferrable to leave the decision making to the globalist elites, rather than the unwashed masses who have live with the results of the decision. The EU-crats and globalist banksters agree whole-heartedly!

Boris is going to be PM. What a garbage situation the UK is in.

The shifty Tory shysters are evidently averse to putting out their Johnson for public scrutiny, but who's going to vote for an empty chair? The myriad of secret Borisian sycophants hiding in the woodwork, of course. Tory Stewart "binned" the other candidates in the debate, but he'll have to wait a while longer for his chance until after Boris has led his party down the Brexit path to oblivion.

Nigel Farage is the only one who is actually willing to deliver what the majority voted for. It is embarrassing to see the corrupt elites in both parties in action.
