Our stupid dear leader should put sanctions also. Sanctions are tax stolen from citizens by increased prices for products. That tax money goes to the govt. Abe, wake up!

State controlled capitalism is fascism and do you really want Americans to give up their last freedoms?

Yawn, pot and kettle is exactly what's going on here. Trump started this idiocy instead of truly handling this in a smart and effective manner. I've got no compassion for either. China has been abusing it's WTO status, and the greedy elite (In both China and the US) have been exploiting everything they can to add to their cash grab mentality.

The US economic system has withstood the test of time and beaten all others.

So said the Babylonians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans, the Spanish, the British, the Japanese to name a few.

and will never reach the US level because the government does not reflect minority opinions that lead to better decisions.

Ah yes, those famously harmonious American ethnic relations.

For better or (probably) worse, it's only a matter of time before China becomes the most powerful nation on earth

The US economic system has withstood the test of time and beaten all others. The Chinese have a per capita of something like 3,000 dollars(?) and will never reach the US level because the government does not reflect minority opinions that lead to better decisions.

You use the word "beaten" as though trade is a war - this is the merchantilist thinking of the 18 century - trade is not a war but a mutually beneficial system.

Chinese GDP per capita was $1500 in 1990 - the equivalent today of about $3000.

In 2017, GDP per capita was $15,300.

You are wrong by a factor of 5.

Current China GDP is about half of the USA's but catching up fast.

History books in the future will write that globalism and free trade did not go well.

Really? It is what has dragged China out of poverty and given citizens of the USA the world's highest standard of living.

Like all good Republican, Trump is pretty weak at home and good internationally. Standing up to (especially Asian) international economic and military threats is not a matter close to US shores so not so close to US hearts. We need a strong stance in Washington. Bullies taking advantage of US shortsightedness will at some point pay. They’ll scream bloody murder but they’ll have recourse but retreat - and pay.

This isn't just a case of bullying, it is a case of abject stupidity. Either that, or Trump is doing what Putin wants him to do. He's not known as Putin's Puppet for nothing.

This trade war is the essence of stupidity and ignorance. While it may play emotionally well with Trump's base, it will accomplish little and hurt all Americans. There were ample avenues of addressing these issues without resorting to escalating tariffs. And if you look at what businesses are saying, these jobs aren't coming back to America, but going to Viet Nam and other countries and at great cost to American companies. Trade is complex and is not easily manipulated by overly simplistic and imaginary solutions such as tariffs.

State controlled capitalism is outsmarting traditional capitalism. Trump is doing a right thing.

"China accuses U.S. of 'trade bullyism'

Oh, the hypocrisy.

"China imports far less from the United States, making a dollar-for-dollar match on any new U.S. tariffs impossible."

China is going to lose this battle. They had better get with the program and agree to more fair trade.
