WHO advance team heads to China to set up probe into coronavirus origin

A two-member advance team of World Health Organization (WHO) experts has left for China to organize an investigation into the origins of the novel coronavirus behind a pandemic that has killed more than 550,000 people globally, the U.N. agency said on Friday.

The virus is believed to have emerged in a wholesale market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year after jumping the species barrier from the animal kingdom to infect humans.

The two WHO experts, specialists in animal health and epidemiology, will work with Chinese scientists to determine the scope and itinerary of the investigation, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said, declining to name them.

"We know it's very, very similar to the virus in the bat, but did it go through an intermediate species? This is a question we all need answered," Harris told a news briefing.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus later told a news conference: "Two WHO experts are currently en route to China to meet with fellow scientists and learn about the progress made in understanding the animal reservoir for COVID-19 and how the disease jumped between animals and humans."

He added, "This will help lay the groundwork for the WHO-led international mission into the origins."

COVID-19 is the respiratory disease caused by the virus.

The United States, the WHO's largest WHO donor, this week notified the agency that it was withdrawing in a year's time after accusing it of being too close to China and not doing enough to question Beijing's actions at the start of the crisis.

"We view the scientific investigation as a necessary step to having a complete and transparent understanding of how this virus has spread throughout the world," Andrew Bremberg, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, said in a statement to Reuters.

"We expect that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) will offer the team of scientists full access to data, samples, and localities, and look forward to its timely report," Bremberg said.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have said the pathogen may have originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, although they have presented no evidence for this and China has denied it. Scientists and U.S. intelligence agencies have said it emerged in nature.

This is the biggest joke of the corona history. Even a high school student can understand WHO just acted as a puppy for China. Now this drama for searching origin is white wash for WHO and CHINA dirty dealings ... I predict the result now. WHO comes out after a few months of investigation ( ha ha ha) and declare it was came from some rat, cat, pooty, etc..., WILL GIVE A CLEAN CHIT TO CHINA end ...

As long as the the Trump re-election campaign keeps using China as a whipping boy to try and distract the world from the USA's own inadequate response to the pandemic, and for as long as other countries just go along with that, often for the same reason, then the WHO being the only body allowed to investigate what happened in China is as good as you're going to get.

As for what they come up with, it's not like the WHO is just going to be able to put up a report without that report being scrutinized and assessed by independent epidemiologists and scientists the world over - as well as by politicians, naturally, whose main interest will be in trying to use it for their own less than honourable purposes.

Nothing to see here. Move along please!

It is the opportunity for WHO to do the right thing for its own survival and being relevant to this suffering world.

Regardless of the outcome, Tedros must resign for bowing to Beijing's pressure.

Only 9 months after a deadly virus began in the Wuhan area of China, the "World" Health Organization has finally sent two of their specialists into the area. I wonder what could have caused the WHO to finally find time to do their job?

Not by the Chinese it isn't, and I think most researchers now accept that it could not have emerged there.

This is a joke !!! And I bet the result of "investigation" will be that the virus is actually from the mars, it just fallen down by coincidence very close to Wuhan lab. Good job CCP !!!

What are the bets that this WHO team will conclude exactly what the CCP wants them to conclude. Big thumbs up for Trump to get out of that corrupted organization. If and once the WHO rids itself of the CCP influence, a re-entry can be considerred.
