Top Democrats leave open option of Trump impeachment after Mueller report

By Sarah N Lynch and Yasmeen Abutaleb

Top congressional Democrats left the door open on Sunday to the impeachment of U.S. President Donald Trump, but said they would first need to complete their own investigations into whether he obstructed justice in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

Some party leaders have cautioned against impeachment just 18 months before the 2020 presidential election, although prominent liberals have demanded the start of proceedings to remove Trump from office since the release on Thursday of a redacted version of Mueller's report.

U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, whose panel would spearhead any impeachment proceedings, said Democrats would press ahead with investigations of Trump in Congress and "see where the facts lead us."

"Obstruction of justice, if proven, would be impeachable," Nadler said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The redacted version of Mueller's long-awaited report on Russian interference in the 2016 election, the product of a 22-month-long investigation, outlined multiple instances where Trump tried to thwart the probe. While it stopped short of concluding Trump had committed a crime, it did not exonerate him.

Mueller also noted that Congress has the power to address whether Trump violated the law, and Democrats said it would be a matter of discussion in the coming weeks.

"That's going to be a very consequential decision and one I'm going to reserve judgment on until we have a chance to fully deliberate on it," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said on "Fox News Sunday."

Democrats in the House of Representatives planned a conference call for Monday afternoon to discuss their next steps in response to the Mueller report. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote lawmakers last week to notify them of the call "to discuss this grave matter."

Nadler has issued a subpoena to the Justice Department to hand over the full, unredacted Mueller report and other relevant evidence by May 1, although the Justice Department called the request "premature and unnecessary."

Before drawing any conclusions, Nadler said Democrats would want to see those materials as well as hear from Mueller and Attorney General William Barr, who is scheduled to testify in early May. Nadler also said he would call former White House counsel Donald McGahn to testify.

Republicans have stood by Trump, and Speaker Pelosi has cautioned against an impeachment effort that would have no chance of success in the Republican-led Senate.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren became the first major contender for the Democratic 2020 presidential nomination to call for the start of impeachment, saying on Friday that "the severity of this misconduct" demanded it.

Julian Castro, former housing secretary under President Barack Obama and another 2020 contender, joined Warren in backing the launch of impeachment proceedings.

Democratic House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said on CBS television's "Face the Nation" that he could foresee possible impeachment proceedings against Trump,"but I'm not there yet."

He also said Congress needed to look at Trump's finances and gauge Mueller's intentions with his report. But even if Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic impeachment effort, Cummings said: "I think history would smile upon us for standing up for the Constitution."

Representative Tim Ryan, another Democratic presidential contender, said the party should wait until multiple ongoing investigations of Trump in Congress have had a chance to uncover more evidence.

"Let the process play itself out," he said on CNN's "State of the Union" program. "I would just rather us take this next step: educate the American people, really get these details out, let the Judiciary Committee do its work."

Trump, who has repeatedly called the investigation a "witch hunt," has claimed vindication from Mueller's report. Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's lawyers, sought to undermine the credibility of Mueller's investigators on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"I don't think his people are fair," Giuliani said of Mueller's team. "I don't think that report is fair."

While Trump's team had indicated it would release a rebuttal to Mueller's report, Giuliani said that was not imminent although it would probably be released at some point.

"We planned to do it if we needed to. So far, we don't think we need to," he said on Fox News Sunday.

Deapite the repugnant republicans in the senate that wouldn't even put it to trial, impeachment would be another black eye on this flaming clown car of a president.

"I don't think his people are fair," Giuliani said of Mueller's team. "I don't think that report is fair."

Get rid of the redactions, so.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

1 lie about sex with an intern was enough for Republicans to impeach William Jefferson Clinton.

Over 9000 documented lies about national security, financial crimes, election fraud, emoluments violations, and foreign influence should be enough for Democrats to impeach Donald John Trump.

Top Democrats leave open option of Trump impeachment after Mueller report

Leave open? What? Right...waiting for the right moment it can do the most damage! Closer to the start of the primaries!

Do your elected jobs! If an impeachment trial is justified then do it, dont talk about it!

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Actually, I support an impeachment ATTEMPT.

Got loads of popcorn piling up.

-5 ( +10 / -15 )

do it Dems! I dare you.

-3 ( +10 / -13 )

Seems to me the democrats want to spend a lot of money on idiosyncratic vainglorious naval-gazing.

4 ( +14 / -10 )

Trump is obviously corrupt, even his fans will agree with that.

Some people want to hold him accountable, some want him to walk free. That's the debate.

I think some people have had so much sand kicked on their face that they will turn to anyone for hope. They know Trunp uses them, but it's better than being ignored as they always have been.

1 ( +12 / -11 )

God, this is going to fail sooooo badly.

Nadler, do it, pleaseeese! It all helps Trump. ROFL!

-2 ( +14 / -16 )

"Impeachment is likely to be unsuccessful," Rep.Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told ABC's "This Week," before adding: "It may be that we undertake an impeachment nonetheless."

time waster. He supposedly saw evidence of collusion where is it?

0 ( +11 / -11 )

Isn’t it obstruction of justice if Schiff has seen documents that show collusion but he didn’t give them to Mueller?

3 ( +9 / -6 )

The Democrats will do anything to destroy America. Trump is the right man for POTUS! The Democrats are revealing how sleazy and back-stabbing they really are using the weak media as their agenda puppets. Pelosi, Schumer, Hillary, Nadler? Who the hell cares what these people think? Funny how those four people are filthy rich and corrupt, but only complain how filthy and corrupt Trump is! They are horrible ring leaders for their party. Move on, Make America Great Again!

0 ( +10 / -10 )

Make America Great Again!

What does this mean, exactly?

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

Isn’t it obstruction of justice if Schiff has seen documents that show collusion but he didn’t give them to Mueller?

Were such documents requested?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Isn’t it obstruction of justice if Schiff has seen documents that show collusion but he didn’t give them to Mueller?

Did he have documents or see documents?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

5 downvotes (and counting) but nobody is able to explain what the mantra actually means.

What does Make America Great Again mean, Trump supporters?

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Neither, because Schiff has just been lying for the last 22 months about what he saw or had.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Impeachment won’t happen. Voting will happen, and Democrats’ time would be better spent developing a solid, workable platform to improve the country. And will somebody please tell Joe Biden that this isn’t his moment. Let younger folks have a shot, if they aren’t too crazy.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

What’s great about the MAGA concept is that it can mean something different to each and every person and it’s about the USA and it’s people.

Compare that to “I’m with her” where the focus is only on one person and it only has one meaning and excludes ME.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

What does Make America Great Again mean, Trump supporters?

The overall vision of a the country is lacking in its former greatness, Thus MAGA!

4 ( +7 / -3 )

The overall vision of a the country is lacking in its former greatness, Thus MAGA!

Thank you. What is the overall vision of the US and what, specifically, defined its "greatness"?

3 ( +8 / -5 )

"America" (the United States of) is portray as exceptionally the best, or the worst ever. Both are true and false, but both extremes stink as a political device. It is the worst and best of times. Revolution is in the air, so is the "Tokyo Rose" psycho-babel from the Establishment Party and establishment media for Sanders to "surrender."

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

What’s great about the MAGA concept is that it can mean something different to each and every person and it’s about the USA and it’s people.

I guess.

To me, it sounds like a rallying call for the far right. A dog whistle, a modern day fascist slogan, an overturning of civil rights. A hankering after the times when women, gays and "minorities" knew their place and you could freely abuse someone without worrying about consequences.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

I'm for impeachment if there is an absolute win.

If not, I'd let his presidency run its course, which will be over soon. He's pretty much a lame duck president, already. His bipolar, but mostly insane, twitterverse should get loads of lies and ridiculousness on even a higher level and his golf schedule should increase. I have little doubt, after the exposure of his unhinged behavior from many, but the most credible being the Mueller report, his reign of terror is over.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

All countries are great and exceptional. The U.S.A. is just the loudest.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Neither, because Schiff has just been lying for the last 22 months about what he saw or had.

So no, it wouldn't be obstruction of Justice.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Unless he isn’t lying and really has something he didn’t give to Mueller.

lets FBI raid his house at 6am and find out.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Thats really sad that you think that is how to make America great again. I certainly don’t.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

His bipolar, but mostly insane, twitterverse should get loads of lies and ridiculousness on even a higher level and his golf schedule should increase. I have little doubt, after the exposure of his unhinged behavior from many, but the most credible being the Mueller report, his reign of terror is over.

What's most disturbing is the support for him. Whether he is sane or not. But then, history has shown that these populist leaders thrive on the cult of personality, display narcissistic tendencies and seek absolute power.

They also tend to get triggered by criticism or perceived popularity issues (poll ratings, numbers etc).

Dictators will have their fans, I suppose

unhinged behavior

What a laugh. No more rockets from North Korea flying over your head.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Unless he isn’t lying and really has something he didn’t give to Mueller.

If you wanna go around in circles go ahead. If he wasn't lying, and the documents weren't requested... Then no, it isn't obstruction of Justice. If he saw documents, then no. If he had documents that proved it, and they were requested and not provided, then maybe. Were the documents requested? Do you know if the documents were requested?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Thats really sad that you think that is how to make America great again. I certainly don’t.

That's rather disingenuous of you. I said that's what MAGA sounds like to me. I certainly don't want it to be the case.

It just comes across as a strange and meaningless slogan, like something people would chant at a game.

But that's the problem with many American voters - everything seems to be framed in the context of sport - games, teams, sides etc.

As long as their "side" wins, it doesn't matter on what basis.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Oh for pity's sake! When will you Democrats grow up!

Talk about unhinged behavior? She’s got crazy eyes. Calling Trump a dictator? Do you agree with her assessment? Last time I checked, Trump won an election. So he’s a dictator because the anointed one didn’t win? You Hillary people are so funny.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Oh for pity's sake! When will you Democrats grow up!

When Trump and the Republicans do? Fair?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

So he’s a dictator because the anointed one didn’t win?

He's a dictator in the making, given his actions.

A president who shuts down government in order to get his way on a controversial issue, such as building a wall along the border with Mexico, offering to reopen it as a concession when his opponents give in, is not protecting the means of democracy. He is treating the government of the United States as a bargaining chip. He is asserting power by any means possible. This is the method of a dictator. A president who claims he has an absolute right to order the military to take actions in the US that are the subject of intense political debate, and do so without congressional approval, is not acting as the head of government of a democracy; he is assuming the role of a dictator. A president who spouts lies during a primetime national television address over what he terms an “undeniable crisis” at the southern US border, which is in fact no crisis at all, is not protecting democracy. He is using whatever means available to him to preserve and build his base of power.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/10/trump-government-shutdown-democracy-power-dictatorship

You Hillary people are so funny.

I'm not a Democrat, I'm not even American. Hillary was the flipside of the coin and the Dems will continue to be as irrelevant and centerist as ever until the likes of AOC and other visionaries rise up through the ranks.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

"Obstruction of justice, if proven, would be impeachable," Nadler said

It wasn't proven, Nadler! Because it didn't happen, Idiot!

Oh for pity's sake! When will you Democrats grow up!

With the exception of Tulsi Gabbard, all the Dems running for president are like a bunch of children.

Hillary LOST! Get over it! Jeez...

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

Trump's gambit is being unveiled, as stated by Rudy Giuliani, who said there was nothing wrong with accepting information from the Russians. That is, Trump is saying there was no collusion, but accepting help from a foreign adversary who has hacked American databases is totally okay.

Is it totally okay? My opinion is that it is not. The Democrat's conundrum is, if not impeached, Trump's behavior could be normalized, yet there is neither no clear path nor time for impeachment.

Shun him. Present the evidence, explain how Trump and his team facilitated and took advantage of it, and let the American people choose next year whether they deem such behavior appropriate.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

nice way to conveniently edit the next sentence.

Rudolph Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s lawyer and a former federal prosecutor, said there’s nothing wrong with a U.S. presidential candidate taking information from Russian sources. “It depends on where it came from,” Giuliani told moderator Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Impeachment for what exactly, being cleared of collusion maybe, the Democrats are unhinged.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Isn’t it obstruction of justice if Schiff has seen documents that show collusion but he didn’t give them to Mueller?

You obviously have zero understand of how obstruction of justice occurs.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

His legacy deserves no less than impeachment, and it'll give him ample opportunity to play the victim, his favorite role. I'd rather they found something that would give him a coronary or a stroke so he could be removed under the 25th Amendment, personally.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Well Muller's witch-hunt didn't work!! therefore, if building a vibrant economy is a crime then impeach! if rebuilding our military is a crime then impeach, if creating jobs is a crime then impeach. It's a shame if people have eyes but don't use them.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Tulsi Gabbard is right: it's time to move on from this.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

They can only talk tough because a number of their dem friends will be getting investigated. Dems will need Costco's jumbo pack of toilet paper because their poopy pants never ends.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

until the likes of AOC and other visionaries rise up through the ranks.

Oh My God.

Ralph Nader rose up and stood for President and the Dems did everything possible to destroy him, more than the Reps. And Ralph was sensible, not like that crazy rich girl.

This morning is turning into a laugh fest. So you hate Trump but you can’t see that your rich girl is a huge fraud?

Top Democrats are insane and in denial.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

The Democrats should concentrate fully on a costed and creditable policy platform.

The current 2016 policy platform is due for a update 2020 Democratic National Convention.

The 2020 presidential election is just 18 months away.

Unless there is political unity within the party, an impeachment process would be an asinine and illogical undertaking, would enquire the support of 20 republican representatives in the Senate, and divert valuable media campaigning resources away from leading and setting the 2020 presidential election political agenda.

Focus on winning 2020 presidential election...

Democratic Party Platform.......

"Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it."

Get rid of the redactions so we can prevent the Russians and corrupt politicians from doing this again.

Impeachment? It ain't gonna with Trump's Republican stooges in control of the Senate. But the public should learn about what's in the Mueller report, especially where Putin and the Russians are concerned. Just like that old story, somebody sold their soul to the devil to get what they wanted.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The democrats are coming apart at the seams. They're looking very desperate now. Impeachment in the 4th quarter of the game? Seems unlikely.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I'm curious. What is it you want? Did you want Hillary? Are you just so angry she didn’t win? Or are you just angry that Trump won?

I’m just observing. Trump is incompetent and his handlers saved him from his incompetence. That seems a reasonable observation given what we now know.

It’s very childish to throw your toys out of the cot because someone makes a reasonable but unflattering observation about politicians you like.

He is pretty good at trolling on Twitter though. I think that’s a reasonable observation too.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Charles Blow of NYT makes a compelling case for impeachment, separating it from removal from office:

Yep, keep the snowball rolling, because another country can actually decided who becomes the leader of another country. Oh wait, I thought the US were the professionals in choosing the leader of another country. Well, Hillary (we saw, we came, he died) Clinton is anyway. How’s that Libya thing working so far? I agree that impeaching Trump would be a tactical error.

Focusing on the incompetent manner Trump went about his business would be very useful. Arguing that Trump came out of this looking like a competent man is as delusional as his crackpot conspiracy theories.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

There is no hope of an impeachment getting through, just the Democrats showing how desperate they are to win anything against Trump - Seeing a 2020 win by Trump the betting at Ladbrokes has now dropped to $2.25 from $2.63 only a month ago.

Very silly partisan nonsense. There are rabid people on both sides.

Not much reason there. At the same level as those who compare him to Hitler.

Einstein was really only good at one thing, physics and maybe playing his violin but lacked in so many areas like relationships, family. He was driven by the sole passion to succeed so in that view maybe similar to Trump.

Calling Albert Einstein “good” in physics. Thanks, you just took my morning laugh into the afternoon. E=mc2

Democrats should concentrate on finding a candidate who isn't a geriatric and who can propose sensible ideas and beat Trump in the next election. Trying to impeach Trump would allow him to whine about being victimised and unfairly treated etc.

The Democrats are completely insane. They are so obsessed with this man, it’s obvious what they are trying to do, they know they can’t do anything to the President, they all know it, but if they can continue to drag his name through the mud maybe people will get tired of him or so that’s the plan, it failed for the Republicans in 1998 and it’s failing for the Democrats and seeing that his poll numbers are still consistent it means their tactics are not putting a dent on this President. Keep trying, keep trying...lol

Consistently poor.

I would say business savvy and shrewd which is to his benefit.

Many have tried to justify his barefaced lies and crackpot conspiracy nonsense.

Liberals do the same in justifying the lies of Democrats and the idiots on CNN.

Not much reason there. At the same level as those who compare him to Hitler.

Which is just the stupidest thing. When Brown shirts are walking the streets and Democrats are herded into camps and wiped out and publicly says, we need to cleanse the country of every single minority, I’ll be the first one to throw in the towel on this President.

Not that bad considering the witch hunt roller coaster he was on, which is fantastic and not good for Democrats at all.

Why should he, he can do whatever he wants to do with his money. In America socialist will understand that, if you work you win some you lose some that’s the whole thing about being independent businessman, he lost a lot of money but gained back each time.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

But never paid the creditors of his bankrupt six companies which runes into millions. Contractors and other workers who also need to feed their families and pay their debts. No consciousness from Trump who basically didn't care about ripping people off. That is acceptable to his fan base?

Not good, but has nothing to do with him being successful or not, if he didn’t pay his creditors which I don’t believe all of that, then that’s between him and them.

Contractors and other workers who also need to feed their families and pay their debts.

Happens.

No consciousness from Trump who basically didn't care about ripping people off. That is acceptable to his fan base?

Never said it was, but our government has been ripping us off since I can remember, so from that perspective, I don’t think what he did was nearly as bad.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Not good, but has nothing to do with him being successful or not, if he didn’t pay his creditors which I don’t believe all of that, then that’s between him and them.

But it does in my code book when the success is built on the pain and loss of others. You don't believe because you don't want to but the info is online.

Happens.

So if it happened to you, say you are owned $100,000 or lose your home because you didn't make the monthly payment. Then that is acceptable to you because "happens".

I don’t think what he did was nearly as bad.

An individual or companies ripping someone off is worse that your claims about the government ripping you off for years. The business of government and business are very different. You pay your taxes and dues the rest is out of your control. Someone sells you a bad product you have redress but not so in bankruptcy.

We do know that because the info is available forcing him to ask German banks.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

My understanding was that Trump was handling around 500 companies and they decided to bankrupt 5 as they weren’t making enough money so they were liquidated,, Trump cannot circumvent the law and would have fulfilled his legal obligations, major creditors are paid first and if any money left goes to the rest, so would anyone expect Trump to pay from his own pocket, of course not. Morally right, not sure, legally right, you bet.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Trump dealt with the Deutsche bank. No law against that.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

We do know that because the info is available forcing him to ask German banks.

So where is the proof? Do you have indisputable and or irrefutable proof?

I agree with the nonsense of the Hitler comparisons. Just hysterical partisanship. I can remember an unhinged partisan on here who compared Bernie Sanders to Stalin.

But it happens, people say worse about Trump.

Yes, there are rabid partisans on both sides. I’m sure as a non-partisan, you have no time for those who compare Trump to Hitler and Sanders to Stalin.

I remember another poster who actually changed his history due to rising partisanship. He told us he voted for Bill Clinton, and then told us later he had never, and would never, vote for a Democrat. Crazed partisanship!

I’m glad you are here to put a lid on stupid generalizations and untruths.

Keep doing what you do!

That's why God invented Google, do your own searches instead of getting me working for you. You are one introducing Trump's savvy business skills even if false.

Deutsche Bank and $2 billion Trump loans.

Top congressional Democrats left the door open on Sunday to the impeachment of U.S. President Donald Trump, but said they would first need to complete their own investigations into whether he obstructed justice in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

At least Dems have given up on the Russia collusion delusion. The next delusion is the obstruction of justice delusion - you know - of the collusion crime that Mueller says never happened. It will be interesting to see how the Left reacts as more evidence of corruption in the FBI and DOJ come out.

Well that settles it. If the Internet says Trump is guilty of taking illegal loans from a German multinational bank - you can take that - to the bank. Its the same source that proved Obama was born in Kenya. The Internet can not be questioned.

If you don't use to use Google there are other search engines and media outlets but when a person is a blind horse its difficult to lead them the water tough. Your dismal also reflects on your own posts when you need to use the internet to express what you know without which you would be a little lost from your humble abode in Fukuoka to even know what's happening out in the great world.

The fact is which ever search engine you want to use, or newspaper to read, the American banks didn't trust Trump to lend him $2 billion forcing him to get it from a German bank who became unsure this year about his ability to repay the loan.

The story appeared in a wide range of media foreign and domestic.

Well that settles it. If the Internet says Trump is guilty of taking illegal loans from a German multinational bank -

who said anything about the German bank loan being illegal? I said an American bank wouldn't give him a loan so he went to a German bank. But nothing illegal about.

Liberals still aren’t tired of the “(something), if proven, (something else)” narrative.

Gave you 2 years, a team of 18 lawyers and 30 million dollars and you still giving me the same “ifs” as when you started.
