Much of Trump's approach to foreign policy seems to consist of punishing our friends and encouraging our enemies.

The massive US military presence in Germany has been a thorn in the side of the Soviets/Russians for decades.

Based on this context, it's hard to see this as anything other than a gift to Putin.

Once again, a stable, free democracy gets the cold shoulder from Trump, while dictators get praised or a free pass. Bizarre.

Wow! Which country would be most pleased by this decision? I know....Russia!

trump.......The Manchurian candidate that keeps on giving!

So Trump got his revenge on Germany. Congrats.

Thankfully, this takes time to execute and Biden will likely reverse the order.

Interesting diplomacy, trying to force someone to do something by threatening to put down the gun pointing at their head. The word 'Defense' has come to have ambiguous meaning but the term 'Occupation' has not changed in definition or nuance. The American troops in Europe (and in Japan) are still forces of Occupation. The 35,000 troops in Hanguk and America's interference has been the only major stumbling block to the reunification of Choseon because both sides want it but America doesn't. With reunification, there is no way to justify our military occupation of the isthmus. As Vanessa Carlisle points out above: "The biggest threat to world peace is the United States. All the troops all over the globe should go home." And, instead, the U.S. should spend the money converting all of our offshore military bases into free, high grade American Universities whose only requirement is English and some advanced preparation such as high school or minimal entry test. Culture is stronger among Humans than ANY weapon, as the Catholic Church learned 1500 years ago. and has employed consistently, AND SUCCESSFULLY, since. If we want to make the World safe FOR America, let's first make the World safe FROM America. And maybe help a whole lot of very good minds be able to make their contributions which are not possible without education of previous Human experience. It's all that is keeping us alive.

Question....

Which Trump promise did Trump keep?

The one to his supporters where he said he'd build a wall and Mexico would pay for it?

The one to Putin where he said he would help destroy NATO?

Answer: Obvious....

Tensions with Russia are mostly caused by Americans. American troops are in Germany, Japan, Turkey, Iraq and Afghanistan to name a few. Care to guess what country those countries surround? Did WWII end or no?

Imagine the belly-aching if Russia had troops in Canada, Mexico, Greenland and Cuba. The U.S. would go directly to war.

The U.S. still has no learned the lesson of the Turkey/ Cuba missile crisis. It all began with the U.S. putting nukes in Turkey in Russia's face. So Russia put nukes in Cuba in America's face. Does America accept the tit for tat? Oh, no! Its all whine and complain and worry and stress and release the warships! How did it end? Kennedy sends his brother to make a deal will the missiles get removed. But America history books just call it the "Cuban Missile Crisis" and make you think Russia started it.

The biggest threat to world peace is the United States. All the troops all over the globe should go home.

If it happens, this will cost the US the tax payers more.

Should be a good news for Germany and the German people! They should celebrate US troops out of their country! Fewer US troops means fewer local crimes and NO US troops means no local crimes! The people of Okinawa were so much desired to see foreign troops get out of their islands!

If you don’t pay, we will go away! MAGA. Oh and as a going away present, some sanctions.

Why does Germany need US troops? Russia is a great allay and the Nord pipeline is proof.

So Trump got his revenge on Germany. Congrats

Not revenge, Merkel wasn’t destined to govern a fifth term, thankfully.

U.S. to withdraw about 12,000 troops from Germany but nearly half to stay in Europe

Putin's not gonna like this. But I thought... well, this must mean the ones still beating that dead horse are wrong!

so Angela Merkel, based on her actions and public statements, would be considered a "friend" of the United States? The German people, yes, but their leadership? no way.

I mean, I know she is mad since Obama got caught spying on her phone and all but still.

Much of Trump's approach to foreign policy seems to consist of punishing our friends and encouraging our enemies.

All these promises, as a minimum. But keep on misinforming and speculating. Removing troops from Germany and redeploying them makes perfect sense. even more so if they refuse to pay for NATO.

Which Trump promise did Trump keep?

There is no reason for the US military to be in Germany in the first place.

How interesting to see the warmongers of both parties unite to protest any kind of troop withdrawal.... wonderful harmony between the neocons and neolibs.

Which Trump promise did Trump keep?

All of them. At least he is trying to. But having the entire swamp, both the neocons and neolibs, their corporate donors, the fake media, and the consumers of the fake media fight him every step of the way does not make it easy.

some U.S. troops would reposition to the Black Sea region and some could temporarily deploy in waves to the Baltics.

I heard Poland could be a possible move as well. Makes perfect sense.

Germany is only half heartedly participating in NATO. Let them have half the defense commitments from the US. It’s a win-win. for both sides.

The biggest threat to world peace is the United States. All the troops all over the globe should go home.

That’s just absolutely absurd.

The US is not not trying to annex the Baltics and it’s not trying to annex Cuba and how did he Cuban missile crisis end? Both countries remain still standing, intact and the US thankfully didn’t blink which ultimately proved to the Russians, we will always be a stalemate in their eyes. There was and still is no way the US will allow Russian territorial encroachment on their doorsteps as well as the same attempts by the Chinese. The US is not the problem, it is however a problem for the Chinese more so and that’s a good thing.
