Good grief... you mean politicians could be liable for the lies they tell to further their careers? What a radical thought....

Less than 24 hours after polls on the referendum closed, Nigel Farage was on BBC stating that it was wrong of him to have claimed that the National Health Service would be able to get 350 million pounds per week if the UK left the EU. This statement was the key argument on which pro-Brexit leaders campaigned, and it is clear that the voters were actively, and intentionally, misled. Boris Johnson told these same lies.

@CrazyJoe

I feel your commment is missing some key details that I think are important.

Farage has stated numerous times that Johnson and the Leave campaign (not to be confused with Farage's Leave.EU campaign - which was completely separate) made a mistake by using the gross figure of £350 million. He added that the gross figure was actually higher than that (nearer to £385 million). In actual fact, after the rebate and the money that comes back from the EU, the figure that the UK gives the EU each day is £34 million (or £238 million a week). He said it would have been much better for Johnson and the Leave campaign to have used this net figure instead.

However, the one fact that everythone overlooks (or ignores because they don't want to acknowledge it) is that the wording on the bus was:

"We send the EU £350 million a week" "Let's fund our NHS instead"

At the time, the Leave campaign refused to say that this was a pedge because it was a referendum and not a general election. In addition, the word "Let's" doesn't mean "We will" or "We promise to", so you can't argue the point that it was a promise, it was just pointing out what could be done with the money.

Personally, I think the idea was good, but the figure was a bad choice. If they had used the net figure instead, there would be no problem with what was written.

Here is a link to a video of Farage stating all of this:

One of the best things about Britain is that every person has the right (with some limits) to bring their own private criminal prosecution against any other person, even where the authorities have declined to prosecute for some reason. It's the ultimate check on government corruption and lawlessness.

Johnson has lied and lied again, along with so many politicians. Those in public office should not be allowed to get away with constantly spinning lies, shame it's taking a private prosecution by a member of the public for this to happen.

Hapless crowd-funder Marcus Ball, 29 -- not stated disparagingly, very honourable and noble crusade to hold, "well" if proven soon to be jailbird Boris Johnson accountable for a bus hauled around the UK emblazoned with a highly dubious statistical end of the rainbow pot of gold for the UK national health service.

In reality Marcus Ball, and Boris Johnson are little more than convenient cannon fodder for District Judge Margot Coleman to inadvertently set in motion an agenda for a full Judicial Review to reverse the 23rd June referendum and ultimately Brexit.

Interestingly the predominant factor is that the proceedings belies a means to hold Tony Blair and Alastair Campbell accountable for there actions in the Middle East, following the Chilcot inquiry that delivered damning evidence that Blair decision to support, with the aid of Alastair Campbell dodgy dossier and illegal War costing the lives 150,000 innocence civilian deaths, entire families!!

While I love the principle of this, particularly when it involves a compulsive liar and slimy opportunist like Johnson, this won’t fly in court from what I’ve read. I do hope it serves to draw attention to what kind of man he is and damage his bid for the leadership.

@Tangerine2000

While you can argue about the wording of the infamous NHS stunt, we all know what game they were playing and it was worded to deceive. It reeks of Johnson.

@Jimizo

I believe the intention behind all of this is to find a reason to declare the result of the referendum invalid, in order to hold another one.

I believe this is happening because Farage won the EU elections easily, that the result shows more people back leave than 3 years ago. He also now has a real shot at winning an election. Also, the Tories are being forced to choose a WTO candidate as leader. And finally, the timing of this whole thing is off. Why now? Why not any other time within the last 3 years. This whole situation smells very fishy. Just like the Gina Miller case, which was designed to stop Article 50 (by requiring an act of parliament when in fact Cameron said he would invoke it the day after the referendum).

I would like to ask you, if this ends up nullifying the result from 2016, would you think it fair to hold another referendum because of a court decision 3 years after based on an opinion that leave won because of the bus?

After a little research, it seems that the private prosecutor who has brought this case forward, 29-year old Marcus Ball, deleted the following post from his own blog......

“Once these prosecutions have established that politicians did indeed lie to voters our next step will be to take other action to prevent Brexit. This may be in the form of a judicial review… We will also work to reverse Brexit and ensure our membership of the European Union is not lost”

Wow! After digging a little more, this guy deleted his original crowdfunding video for the case. It stated:

“We have the research, the evidence, the legal team, the QC’s legal opinion on side, a persuasive legal argument on side, thousands of wonderful backers, as well as lots of journalists and national press, keen to cover the story.”

Where is all of this coming from?

Aside from the fact that the guy looks like a complete toff, complete with suit, unbuttoned shirt and pocket square when dressing casually, he has some shady business history....

Ball had run multiple enterprises before striking Boris-Gold, having incorporated himself as a company (with overdue accounts – a criminal offence under the Companies Act) and had another that was compulsorily struck off.

The GBP 350 million a week figure is false: the UK has never paid that amount to the EU. Lying Johnson knew it was false but kept repeating the lie regardless. I don't see how he can plead anything other than guilty.

If money is so important why hasn't lying Johnson criticised Chris Grayling for wasting billions? Why hasn't Johnson apologised for millions he wasted on the non-existent Garden Bridge and water cannons that could not be used? The lying, philandering oaf should be put in the stocks and left there.

@Scrote. Bang on.

Is that the case? Honest question. Blair's lies were to parliament. My understanding is that lying to parliament is not subject to the same laws.

@albaleo Yes, anything said in the chamber is subject to Parliamentary privilege.

Are there other examples of this kind of case in the UK or did you just fire that off without thinking?

Boris Johnson, the favorite to replace Theresa May as British prime minister

He may have to do until the Brexit Party takes power and Farage becomes PM.

The Brits are going to put their own Donny into power. Smooth.

Wow, a politician being hoisted by his own petard

Being taken to court by an own blatant lie

Double, triple-check a fact when making it your center-point

When the left fear their opponent take them to court

Perhaps, but in this case, I think some on the right will be smiling too. I don't imagine Johnson is a favorite among many on the Tory right.

The Brits are going to put their own Donny into power. Smooth.

I don't think they are of the same kind. In some ways, I'd prefer Trump to Johnson. While Johnson might be more fun to have a drink with, as a Prime Minister I think he'd be useless or worse. Trump at least sees himself as being serious and we can see what segment of the population he panders too. Johnson is a clown. Unfortunately, he seems popular among the 140,000 card carrying Tories.

Hi albaleo,

The comparison between Johnson and Blair on my part are tenuous, law and the confidence of Justice are sometime opaque and to distinguish opinion between the too, is a tad frivolous.

However this Johnson private prosecution is a first, and a bottom up from a legislative standpoint, in the context of Blair/Campbell, all previous attempts have fallen on stony ground.

Tony Blair: Iraq war prosecution attempt goes back to court …..

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/16/tony-blair-iraq-war-prosecution-attempt-goes-back-to-court

However a member of parliament, even theoretically a former Prime Minster can be deemed in contempt of parliament.

Please, detailed below page 25..

So for servicemans familes and indeed my huff puff is at present wishful thinking.

Will be condemned to have a hair cut.

He's already had one in anticipation of the leadership contest, but he's still unpresentable to decent society. I say, "Lock 'im up!",' but he'll be shown mercy by the court which always has a soft spot when dispensing "justice" to Tory posh boys.

He may have to do until the Brexit Party takes power and Farage becomes PM.

And with your detailed knowledge of British politics, can you explain exactly how this is going to happen?
