If the tower clears a pilot to land from one direction, but he attempts to land from the opposite direction, then the type of aircraft is probably irrelevant to the crash. Pilot error would be the first question.
I hope those that died at least didn't suffer, that's all you can hope for in the face of such a tragedy.
