Funny to watch the welcome Trump received. "Frosty" would be too warm. In the GOP world, Bush was the antithesis of Trump: Pragmatic, willing to work across the aisle, mindful of history and the importance of enduring friendships, self-effacing, and, above all, aware that the office of the presidency far supersedes the man who currently, temporarily holds it. These are qualities Trump will never understand.

What amazes me is that how phony the Democrats out reach and admiration is for Bush 41. Back in 1992 when I was still with NBC they Democrats and news pundits were roasting, absolutely tearing the President apart. Tom Brokaw hated the man Andrea Mitchell, Sam Donaldson, the list goes on and on. Only 7% of the media voted for Bush. And still now they can’t honor the man, the Democrats NEVER liked Bush, they treated him horribly, they have to take cheap shots and throw Trump’s name into the mix when Trump has nothing to do with Bush. Even on “The View” the other day Meghan McCain and the so brilliant Joy Behar got into a shouting match on live TV because Behar wanted to talk about Trump and McCain thought it was inappropriate given the presidents passing and wanted to give him that respect and Behar felt insulted and demanded to finish her idiotic criticism of the current President and acted like a little kid. The Democrats can snipe the President any other day, but they just can’t help themselves The media is just absolutely awful, Shameful, sad. Laura Ingraham said it best. The Democrats scorn Republicans when they’re alive, but praise them when they’re dead, totally nailed it.

not my favorite president by any means but certainly a good man. much better than his son...

He's one of those guys where you read about his accomplishments and you feel three inches tall.

“His life code was: Tell the truth. Don’t blame people. Be strong. Do your best. Try hard. Forgive. Stay the course. And that was, and is, the most American of creeds,"
Jon Meacham on Bush with Trump sitting in the first row. Fantastic shade game.

That's typical phony politics for you. The lovefest for GHW is fake news at its finest. We don't need to wish ill on the dead, but it's been nothing but veiled swipes at Trump.

Apart from his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair and a few other important things...

That is a perfect definition of ‘having low standards’.
Bush senior was a decent man with standards higher than most.
Toasted Heretic
Ironic then, given your entire post is a swipe at Democrats. Yup, some people just can't help themselves.
bass4funk
I agree and yet Democrats have been doing it since Nixon’s death.
I agree.
But I’m not a politician, big difference.

He was far from perfect, but in comparison to the man in the White House today,..........

"but in comparison to the man in the White House today,........."
He sucked.

1glenn, you put it perfectly. Bush Sr was by no means a great President. But he was not a racist, misogynist and morally bankrupt , all of which the current one is.
I remember ranting about Bush Jr on this forum 10 years ago, but now I can't help but think fondly of him.
Just goes to show how everything is relative....

Readers, comparisons with President Trump are not relevant to this discussion.

To be fair, I don’t think many ( any?) politicians could pass the kind of purity standard you seem to be working with. Lying is part of the game. Routinely trading in lies, conspiracy theories and fake news is another matter.
Bush senior was probably better than most on the honesty score.
lincolnman
He was as honest as a politician could be - to be in politics, you have to sell some of your soul.
He was involved in Iran-Contra and the Willie Horton ad can be considered one of the offensive ever, but those are small compared to his leadership of the first Gulf war and his delicate handling of the fall of the Soviet Union. And his 73 year marriage to one woman has to be celebrated.

Happens to all of us. Get over it, try some self-moderation and plan your next approach, is my advice.
Aaaaand there goes any sympathy you might have garnered.
Toasted Heretic
True dat. It doesn't excuse him, of course, but my heart's not made of stone and I did find myself welling up when George W gave his eulogy. Nobody could be failed to be moved by that, I reckons.

"The Democrats scorn Republicans when they’re alive, but praise them when they’re dead"
Because 41 was actually a good person with kindness in his heart. You and Ms. Ingram won't need to worry about any perceived hypocrisy towards your beloved in the years to come. Nothing to praise about 45 now and there wont be anything in the future
William Bjornson
@bass4funk
The Democrats don't praise Republicans when they're dead, they praise them BECAUSE they are dead. And I believe that such praise, such behavior, whether hypocritical or not, is called 'grace'. When Mr. Carter returns to the Great Probability, most on all sides will do the same. It's the State. Were it the man who recognised penicillin or who invented our digital age or anyone who contributed to the greater good, a footnote, two column inches maybe. But he who wields the mace demands veneration and, as we see, we give it. So it has been, and so shall it ever be. It has become innate in us. Obedience. Requiescat in pace, Mr. Bush.
