I don't think the Dems have ever handled 'race' well. The stigma will always be there, they used the KKK as muscle to harrass blacks. IMHO, if Ms Harris wanted to play the race card, she should have joined the Reps instead.

no we will not be giving illegal aliens healthcare. we will be deporting them.

Glad to see Dems finally got around to their favorite thing, identity politics!

Harris is awful. She will never be president even if the Dems are dumb enough to nominate her.

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

Kamala Harris would make a mess of imposter Trump in any debate. An assertive, intelligent black woman.

The stench of fear from the Trump cult is already apparent, three posts into the thread...

0 ( +9 / -9 )

Harris is a bit too green - give her time. Biden is too long in the teeth. My bet is on Warren.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Biden, the former vice president making his third run for the White House, said Trump's tax cuts for the wealthy and other economic policies were increasing economic inequality in the United States.

To be fair, this started under Reagan and increased under both Republican and Democrat presidents since at different rates. Nobody has fully addressed this as president.

Harris would make a mess of imposter Trump in any debate

I’d say Sanders would be better toe-to-toe with Trump in a debate. Trump backed out of debating him last time.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I think Senator Harris would be best as a vice presidential candidate. She has proven that she works well under other politicians. As for her debate performance, it doesn't take much to fluster Uncle Joe.. All he is running on are the fumes of the Obama legacy, and it's clear that today's democratic party is different.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Biden is too old to be the president.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Harris looked good. I've been more impressed with Warren on policy, but think Harris might have a better chance at actually beating Trump. She would destroy him in a debate. Actually Warren would destroy him in a debate too, but I think Harris would do it a bit more effectively.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

People the enemy here is trump, team up and get trump out before , all american go broke and trump get richer & richer & richer.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I would like Senator Harris to be the next POTUS. I think the time is right. I will, however, vote for whoever the nominee is. We must get Trump out. That is the most important thing.

Capable and intelligent with a compassion for the American People. We don't need another old white guy in the WH.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Harris challenges Biden in breakout U.S. debate performance

And Biden looked rattled as everyone attacked him.

The only mantra Democrats have is: "Defeat Trump" and "freebees for everyone, including illegal immigrants".

I'll bet that the Democrat Party will self destruct along the way to the Democrat National Convention, and the Convention will be a chaotic circus with no clear cut winner.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Yes, by all means, get rid of President Trump before everyone goes bankrupt. With the best economy in decades, record employment (particularly among minorities), high business and consumer confidence, sure...

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Good to hear. I don't plan on voting for Harris in the primary but good to hear she did progressives a solid by taking Biden to task. Someone needs to. Sanders is too nice and Warren was on another night. Biden will be blown out of the water long, long before Iowa.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

She would destroy him in a debate.

No, she's far too emotional to debate Trump. Remember, he's the master troll of our times and Harris probably wouldn't react well to that. Even during this debate, she started strong and petered out towards the end.

Buttigieg would debate Trump much better because he comes prepared with Grade A scripted material and is good at staying composed (but, judging from this past week, when he does get flustered it's a very bad look for him.)

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Great job by Dems totally destroying the guy it has already been decided will be the nominee. trump can reuse all these attacks later as you agree it’s true when Dems say it, it’s also true when Trump repeats it.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Great job by Dems totally destroying the guy it has already been decided will be the nominee.

Who has decided this and how do you know this?

Genuine question.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Yeah, I was waiting for the knives to come out. last night was just too cozy and chummy. Looked more like everyone was trying to position themselves for a cabinet job in the future, rather than actually run for President. It was good to see some fireworks.

One problem that Sen. Harris may have is that she isn't actually authentically "African American". These days, distinctions are being made between those who are actually DOS (descendants of slaves) and those who aren't. As the very privileged daughter of two academics she knows very little of the DOS experience.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

I would say that swing voters are tired of identity and victim politics promoting, race baiting politicians such as Ms. Harris. So far she has proposed nothing that will improve the economic livelihood and welfare of working class citizens more than President Trump has. She has no chance. Thankfully.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Nancy Pelosi is wisely trying to steer the Dems away from extreme leftists like Ms. Harris. Will she succeed? I think the cancer is too advanced and average U.S, citizens doing too well under Trump for the Dems to win in 2020 no matter who they nominate.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I will be remembering some these boisterous and erroneous comments when Trump sweeps up.

I see red everywhere.

The Dems do not have a viable candidate. PERIOD! Yawn.....

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Its really interesting watching the Democrat party self destruct.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

she isn't actually authentically "African American".

Using that metric, nor is President Obama. And how do you know she knows little of the experiences of those descended from African slaves?

White bigots discriminate against dark skinned people all the time. White US bigots attack people with darker skin, people who don't 'look' white, all the time.

Harris is of South Asian descent, too. Read about South Asians who've been attacked because the white bigot thought they were Arab. Or some other stupid reason.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

@kestrl Its really interesting watching the Democrat party self destruct.

Perhaps for those who want to undermine the remaining bits of democracy and establish authoritarianism.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Why do people see a debates and differences of opinion as ‘self destruction’?

Trump was cracking knob jokes and engaging in schoolyard nicknames in his ‘debates’. He was also tweeting unflattering pictures of Ted Cruz’s wife.

I watched about half of this. There were a few digs, against Biden in particular, on his record but nothing personal.

A reasonably substantive discussion without trash. A democratic discussion. I don’t see the self destruction.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Here's what the 2020 election is going to come down to:

Which do you think the average voter will prefer -

A platform that says orange man bad, pay more taxes, and we're going to throw the borders open

Or

A platform of hey, I've been the president, the economy is soaring, no major wars, by the way I think we do need border security

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

It is very sad to watch a debate of useless and naive politicians who don't understand what are our top priorities. The ratio between highest and lowest paid in a company is about 250. In some companies reached 3000!!! We need laws limiting this ratio to about 10 like it is in Germany and in Japan. 250 means that we have a very unfair distribution of wealth, or in other words we have pure slavery. To tax the richest ones is to take money that belong to the lowest paid in companies and give them to government. Money belong to people that earn them. WE MUST ELECT A PRESIDENT WHO UNDERSTANDS THAT OUR TOP-TOP PRIORITY IS TO HAVE LAWS LIMITING THIS RATIO TO ABOUT 10!!!!!! That would solve many-many other problems we have. We need to educate our voters to elect smart and passionate politicians!!! We need to educate our media about that!!!

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

no we will not be giving illegal aliens healthcare. we will be deporting them.

Glad to see Dems finally got around to their favorite thing, identity politics

The clock is ticking, they have one week left.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

So besides the usual hysterical screams of doom and gloom we have to abolish private healthcare insurance-screw 150 million Americans, give out FREE healthcare, let the government take over because they always get it right, especially if it’s run by Democrats (heaven help us all)increase more entitlements (you know that’s a given) allow everyone to come in (sovereignty what’s that?) from anyone for whatever reason, criminal or fugitive. They want to get rid of ICE (who the heck needs immigration enforcement, after all, we are the world); want to raise taxes....again, want to wipe out all student school loan debt (who will pay, haven’t figured that one out yet, but someone will...hopefully, somehow) I mean, what’s $1.5 trillion, that’s chump change, we promise to allow transgender men to shower, play and compete with women because it’s the right thing to do...according to Progressive ideology, let’s allow late term abortion, who cares if you kill a full term child, not important, let have more regulations, go after big business, because they are all evil, so maybe the homeless in LA and SF can provide jobs for millions of Americans....I year, we have to give up eating meat, because in 12 years we’ll all be dead anyway as one road scholar politician predicted. Oh, I forgot, we need to add the racial component because to get the full effect, race HAS to be interjected into everything if you want to win or compete in any debate.

Yeah, that’ll knock Trump out of the water for sure. Lol

Its really interesting watching the Democrat party self destruct

Actually, it’s almost sad, really sad.

Harris put people in jail for smoking weed. While she was smoking weed herself and listening to rap albums that didn’t exist until years later. What part of picking her makes any sense? Yet you just let her destroy your nominee.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

In some countries, like Japan, Britain, EU countries there are universal healthcares providing good healthcares for most of the people. In addition, there are also private health insurance which people can have and use in both public hospitals and private ones. There are public hospitals but there are also private hospitals such as the London Clinic. The private ones are extremely expensive but if you are rich. Most public hospitals have private wings.

I think basic universal healthcare provided or controlled by the government. The private healthcare organises itself.

America is capable of providing universal healthcare while retaining the private healthcare.

Let’s be honest. In supporting Trump, you’ve had to forgive more dodgy stuff than anyone.

I don’t think Trump supporters should be taking the purity angle.

You flushed that down the toilet a very long time ago.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

So anyone who lies and does hypocritical things on your side is not held to the same standard as you hold Trump to?

Incorrect. Same standard.

Yes, I mean, why worry about $1.5 trillion, when we can't even pay for the $2 trillion we just gave the upper 1%. I mean, compared to that, compared to the economic effect of ensuring millions of students will be highly educated, trained, and able to do things like buy houses, start families, and have the economic freedom to start small businesses... well, those tax cuts are just more important.

Whatever happens in a debate, however bad it is for Trump, he and his base will still claim it as a win. I bet none of his supporters will ever concede that he's been destroyed, even if he clearly is.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

So anyone who lies and does hypocritical things on your side is not held to the same standard as you hold Trump to?

All candidates need to be held to account, but in supporting Trump, you have to turn a blind eye to or explain away unparalleled trash, lies, childishness, vulagarity, pure filth and spectacular ignorance on a near daily basis.

There are those who say they see what Trump is but are prepared to stick with him as long as he gets done what they want done. That is a defensible view of a leader to some extent and one you have clearly adopted.

I just think when you are coming from this place, looking to make it about purity doesn’t really carry a lot of weight.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

For a second day in a row, the winner of the democrat debates was President Trump.

Right. Like Willy Brown. Under indeed.

My private insurance is great and it does the exact same thing, but I don’t have to worry about massive waiting times and I’m allowed to keep my favorite doctor which I had since high school.

The socialists version of a free takeover, kiss all that goodbye.

In addition, there are also private health insurance which people can have and use in both public hospitals and private ones.

As I have said before, fix the system for the 20 million that can’t afford it, leave my private insurance alone and we have no problem.

.

America is capable of providing universal healthcare while retaining the private healthcare.

Not on a massive scale. Obamacare is proof of that.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

Conveniently located on a non-existent US base in Fukuoka.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

blacklabel: no we will not be giving illegal aliens healthcare

You said you purposely don't have health insurance, meaning if some catastrophic event happens to you, the taxpayers will be footing the bill. I guess one could say that you have the "illegal alien healthcare plan." You're the same as them, so thanks for putting that burden on me.

My private insurance is great and it does the exact same thing, but I don’t have to worry about massive waiting times and I’m allowed to keep my favorite doctor which I had since high school.

You don't have private health insurance as you don't live in the US. You said that you go to the base for healthcare. Also, you haven't had the same doctor since high school. Given your statements about Nixon and remembering New York in the 70s that would make your high school doctor pretty darn old by now.

Besides, your party has had 10 years and you haven't even come up with a healthcare plan yet. 10 years. Obama got the job done, why can't you?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

America is capable of providing universal healthcare while retaining the private healthcare.

Not according to Bernie and Elizabeth.

I wouldn't vote any of these people in this debate dogcatcher, much less to run my country.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

I will say this - Biden was far too nice to that loudmouth Harris, who kept interrupting him.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

A bit uncouth for you?

Have more reserved and polite politicians become your thing since 9:18 pm JST?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Private healthcare often does not cover the full costs. I know that from my elderly parents who for years paid for private healthcare but on top of that also had to pay more than $500,000 for treatments that would have been available under universal healthcare.

your childhood doctor would have turned more than 100 years of age? How so? Your childhood was more than 50 years ago. Does he also work at the Fukuoka military base where you work?

Serrano: Biden was far too nice to that loudmouth Harris, who kept interrupting him.

Harris is a badass. I didn't watch the debates because I don't like watching politicians be politicians, but I did enjoy her moment when she turned your hero AG Barr into a stuttering little puppy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHd_UlebyoM

You really only need to watch the first 60 seconds. She has a great look on her face.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Trump has been unable to come up with a replacement for Obamacare and has postponed it until his second term, if elected?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I watched the whole debate. It was not a breakout debate for Harris. She did fine. Biden treaded water.

But that is all he needs to do.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Pete Buttigieg gets a strong second place for his response to which country he’d talk to first: “Well, we don’t know who we’ll piss off the most over the next two years.”

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I have to admit, Harris was good, loved the way she talked about Biden, hit the nail straight on, still would never vote for her or her insane impossible and irrational idea of politics, but she’s definitely got my respect on how she handled herself, now could she handle Trump is an entirely different story.

Well with gerrymandering being legal now there will be pockets of the country where democracy won't exist anymore depending on how far it's taken. They can go extreme in my state of Arizona and lock up Republican rule for the foreseeable future, and California Democrats could do the same there.

bass, looks like you and me might be switching states in the future?

I guess so.

They can go extreme in my state of Arizona and lock up Republican rule for the foreseeable future, and California Democrats could do the same there.

And the Republicans can expand theirs and the Dems have to deal with it, good times ahead.

looks like you and me might be switching states in the future?

Texas has as much time chance of turning blue as California turning red.

The Democratic debate was by far the most embarrassing 2 hrs of tv that I have seen in a long time.

The candidates are like little children, jabbing, poking and trying to get attention so they can play in the sand box a little longer. NO plans, NO value, No charisma and same old same old. You did it to yourself Democrats. Congratulations on another 4 years President Trump.

The only thing they’ve done was ensure Trump’s second victory. Despite many of his imperfections, Trump is no weakling and No dummy, but these socialists....if this is their best they got, Trump doesn’t really have to try, even Donny Deutsch admitted that.

the daughter of a black father from Jamaica and an Indian mother

And herein lies her virtue.

I'm reminded of the words of MLK: … not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I wanted to puke when Harris said, guys, guys, the American people don't want to see a food fight, blah blah blah. That was some serious virtue signaling there. The irony is, black students were doing way better in school before Brown vs the Board of Education--look it up. All kids would have done better if they didn't have to stand out at the bus stop in winter at 6am just to catch a bus to go across town just to fill a racial quota. Also, think about the implications: black students can only succeed in the presence of whites. But I am sure the irony is lost on Ms. Harris as she bleats for reparations. Now, black students perform at the bottom of the class nationally--no matter how much money you throw at the schools (again, the implication: black students can only learn if they have top of the line technology and equipment--not a sense of responsibility, no that's not what's need, only more money. Never mind that Asian student of immigrant parents--who barley speak English and go to the same rundown inner city schools--perform nationally at the top of the class).

Ms. Harris does not have the best interest of her race in mind.

She was only going after floppy Joe because he is in the lead--even though, Joe is a racist.

All the candidates--all 20--did poorly. Again, there only platform was: free! free! free! and orange man bad!

They promised a better economy, but they didn't say how. Trump had actual plans to propound during his debates. The dems promised to build up middle-class America, but they didn't say how. Again, Trump had actual steps laid out.

Finally, you'll notice, Trump talks about American citizens--whether native born or not--but the dems just keep talking about immigrants--and in Spanish no doubt!

The dems are losing the race already.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

but these socialists...

Listen, I know you've got talking pts. to adhere to and all but 20 socialists? Get a grip man. I mean, I could sort of see where you're coming from if the discussion were restricted to Warren or Sanders, the only two fire-breathing progressives in the race (even though they're basically new dealers with no desire to tear down capitalism). No one's arguing for the seizure of the means of production or putting people in communes, let's put it that way. They just want recalibrate or reign in markets, which for the past 30 years have been worshiped as infallible.

But Uncle Joe or Kamala or Booker--these are neoliberals who are no more threatening to the order of things than Obama, the Bushes or even Reagan for that matter (all of whom paved the way for our current president). Like their predecessors, they're by and large going to work on behalf of Wall Street and elites. Socialism perhaps, but for the wealthy, which has been the template for our elected officials for far too long. Ditto Mayor Pete and Beto--they're no threat to anything, thus the more favorable coverage they get. Frank Bruni in the NYT just today saying the Kamala-Pete ticket is the way to go. The supposedly liberal, let alone socialist-in-your-eyes NYT, advocating for tame neoliberals, candidates who naturally are generating the most buzz among Wall St. donors.

So, perhaps just a bit more precision.

Yeah, you can believe that, I’m not a fool.

No one's arguing for the seizure of the means of production or putting people in communes, let's put it that way. They just want recalibrate or reign in markets, which for the past 30 years have been worshiped as infallible.

I never advocated that they were, but they do want to control freedom of speech (fascists) they want to control and take over the healthcare industry, increase the size of government, give everyone a free living wage, abolish ICE, so let everyone in, Castro wants to decriminalize migrant law breakers, want to control how much you can earn and how much they can take from you, not only are these people socialists, they are out of their minds.

But Uncle Joe or Kamala or Booker--these are neoliberals who are no more threatening

Well, yes, they won’t be President, so they aren’t threatening, you’re right about that.

Socialism perhaps, but for the wealthy,

What?

which has been the template for our elected officials for far too long. Ditto Mayor Pete and Beto--they're no threat to anything, thus the more favorable coverage they get. Frank Bruni in the NYT just today saying the Kamala-Pete ticket is the way to go.

Now we are quoting the most liberal and most leftist progressive paper in the country? Oh, dear lord....I’m going to post something from Breitbart next.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

What a bizarre debate last night. The Dem candidates are all in for the illegal immigrant vote and taking away people’s private health care. I hadn’t seen pandering like that since Biden’s black church speech where he attempted to frighten blacks by claiming that the party of Lincoln was going to “Put ya’ll back in chains” - affecting a black preachers accent.

The Democrats lurched so far to the Left last night Clown Car #2 fell over on its side. Will be interesting if the nominee can recover from that full on Communist Party rally that they put on last night. The only way Trump wins is be getting a corrupt or loony tunes opponent like he got in 2016. 2016 he got Putin’s puppet in Hillary. In 2020 it’s look more like a Fidel Castro knick off.
