Damned earthquakes...always scare me.

It is nice to hear that nobody is hurt.

After so many years in Japan, and experienced the craziest earthquakes, I will never get use to them.

The Ring of Fire being quite active these past few weeks.... I wonder if we will see any significant earthquakes along the Americas in the coming weeks/months?

This is quite true. In the Cascade mountain range (Oregon and Washington) there has been some unusual seismic activity under Mt. Hood in Oregon and elsewhere. Scientists said it is not a sign of pending volcanic activity but the seismic activity was significant and unusual.

There was a large earthquake in Miyagi here in Japan and this as well.

There is certainly more seismic activity around the ring of fire than normal now.

Magnitute 8.1 is very large and I certainly hope that was "the event" for this series of quakes and not a precursor to something else.

I wonder if it has something to do with the Earth's tilt in relation to the sun. Many of the largest quakes have happened around March. Interesting, I just checked, over half of the 20 largest quakes in recorded history happened from February to April.

I have read speculation that it's also related to full moons where you have the Sun and moon on opposite sides of the Earth, their gravity sort of stretching the planet. I've experienced a M6.6 quake on 9 February 1971, a M6.8 quake in 17 January 1994 but the largest quake I have experienced, and quite close thank you (15-16 km from the epicenter), was a M7.1 on 5 July 2019 after an equally close M6.4 the day before.

Slept through it...

Well-disciplined people - Kiwis just drove or walked inland and up the nearest hill. The family sent video clips of themselves picnicing in the morning along with we are OK message, they had been sailing up there last week! A few traffic jams, but no honking or road rage, they just got on with it.

What's about the lockdown in Auckland ? Still enforced or cancelled ?

The tsunami warnings supersede the level 3 lockdown. This was clearly communicated.

I didn't feel any of the earthquakes, but my wife felt one of them. The main warning was the threat of a tsunami, which have now passed with no drama.

Ring of fire it may be so dubbed. But, there is no relation to be determined with phases of the moon or plate movement in Oregon with that in NZ. It is immensely complex. And it isn't astrology, it's science.

We really need to put an end to fossil fuels and go 100% renewable before it's too late;

these earthquakes are getting ridiculous.

I felt absolutely nothing during my plane flight.

It is science. And the Marianas underwater fault, just like the San Mateo fault in california (I've seen it) is a part of it all. California gets tremors on a near weekly basis but usually they're so low nobody notices. And 'Japanquakes' occur every two years or so. However, all those scary movies I remember as a little kid, as well as Godzilla being awakened from the Marianas region is just Hollywood and sci-fy.

They reacted well, and thankfully the worst case scenario did not materialize. Good Job NZ'ers.

I hope too that the Japanese have learnt lessons from the 2011 quake... for example, not to marshall school kids to the middle of a low lying playing field! (The very thought of that Mentality is depressing to think about)
