A true test of the new world order. Will local people have self determination, or will they be compelled by others? Will democracy be able to make change, or authoritarian minds mire the world in the past? Spain’s best chance at retaining Catalonia should be to start talking with it, and respect its’ democracy; to stop talking like mindless authoritarians and make a substantive case to its’ people they should stay. This should be true of the government of any country made up of democratic territories.

They will be compelled by others to follow the law under the democratic Spainish constitution, which Catalans agreed to be bound by. Sorry, but we can't always get what we want, especially when we all agreed earlier that it would be completely illegal.
Would you support a jingoistic rightwing government in North Dakota or Idaho deciding to call a referendum and unilaterally declaring their independence from America? I doubt it. In contrast to Catalonia, independence referendums in Scotland and Quebec went through a legal process (I personally supported independence in both of those cases and if the Catalan referendum were legal, I would support Catalan independence as well).

Most European countries (but not Spain) supported and recognised the Kosovan declaration of independence, against the wishes of Serbia. I think those countries, and the EU, should explain why they are now against independence for Catalonia. I don't see any difference between the two myself.

There is a big difference. Genocide was committed in Kosovo by the Serbs. Genocide never happened in Catalonia. That's the difference.

Absolutely not correct. The situation in Kosovo (original Serbian land, cradle of the Serbian state) began to worsen when migrant Albanians began to force out the local Serbian populace. Muslim Albanians, then called Kosovans, easily outnumbered Christian Serbs and began to drive the Serbians from Kosovo completely. To hasten the process Albanians created an underground army (UCK) and started a campaign of terror against Serbian civilians and government. When Serbian government tried to restore order NATO intervened on Albanian side and by military force robbed Serbia of its province. That the real big difference in situation: Albanians (Kosovans) are invaders and land-grabbers, Catalonians are on their land.
This said, I hope Catalonia and Spain remain united, fragmentation of established states is a sensless process.
