Trump objects to 'mute' button in next Biden matchup, but debate will go on

By Steve Holland and Andy Sullivan

The final debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden will feature a mute button to allow each candidate to speak uninterrupted, organizers said on Monday, looking to avoid the disruptions that marred the first matchup.

The Trump campaign voiced objections to the change - made after the president repeatedly talked over both Biden and the moderator at last month's debate in violation of its agreed-upon rules - but said the Republican would still take part in the Thursday night event, one of his last chances to reach a large prime-time audience before voting ends on Nov 3.

The Presidential Commission on Debates said each candidate's microphone at the debate in Nashville, Tennessee, would be silenced to allow the other to make two minutes of opening remarks at the beginning of each 15-minute segment of the debate. Both microphones will be turned on to allow a back-and-forth after that time.

"President Trump is committed to debating Joe Biden regardless of last-minute rule changes from the biased commission in their latest attempt to provide advantage to their favored candidate," campaign manager Bill Stepien said.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

More than 30 million Americans have already cast their ballots, limiting Trump's chances of reframing a contest that national and state opinion polls show him trailing.

Trump repeatedly interrupted Biden during a chaotic and ill-tempered debate on Sept. 29, at one point provoking Biden to snap: "Will you shut up, man?"

Trump backed out of a second scheduled debate set for last Thursday over a disagreement about the virtual format following his COVID-19 infection. At that time, he raised concerns about having his microphone muted.

"You sit behind a computer and do a debate - it's ridiculous, and then they cut you off whenever they want," Trump said in an Oct. 8 interview on Fox Business.

Earlier on Monday, Trump's campaign said it was unhappy with the announced set of topics for Thursday's debate, arguing that it should focus more on foreign policy and asserting that the nonpartisan group was tilted toward Biden.

Biden's campaign said both sides previously agreed to let moderators choose the subjects. It said Trump wanted to avoid discussing his stewardship of the coronavirus pandemic, which surveys show is the top issue for voters.

"As usual, the president is more concerned with the rules of a debate than he is getting a nation in crisis the help it needs," Biden spokesman TJ Ducklo said.

The number of Americans who voted early reached 30.2 million on Monday, according to the University of Florida's United States Elections Project. That number represents more than one-fifth of all the votes cast in the 2016 election.

Early voting is likely to ramp up this week as more states open up voting centers for those who want to avoid possible coronavirus exposure at crowded Election Day polling sites.

In Florida, where more than 2.5 million have already voted by mail, residents lined up for the first day of early in-person voting. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released last week showed Trump and Biden effectively tied in the state, which is seen as a must-win for the president.

Hundreds of people, most wearing face masks, stood in pouring rain in the morning outside the public library in Coral Gables, a majority-Hispanic city near Miami.

Louis Perez, 57, an insurance fraud investigator, said he was voting for Biden because of Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

"He lied about it right from the beginning," Perez, who is not affiliated with a party, said of Trump.

Registered Republican Antonio Sanchez, an architect who arrived in the United States from Communist Cuba, said he supported Trump because he "stands for freedom" and against socialism.

"My two daughters are doctors," said Sanchez, 59. "I don't think this could have happened anyplace other than America."

the biased commission in their latest attempt to provide advantage to their favored candidate,"

Why is allowing both candidates to speak uninterrupted being "biased"?

Oh, right. Trump is at a disadvantage when he can't interrupt.

"President Trump is committed to debating Joe Biden regardless of last-minute rule changes from the biased commission in their latest attempt to provide advantage to their favored candidate," campaign manager Bill Stepien said.

Trump and his team never stop playing the victim.

It’s pathetic.

I honestly don’t see the point of a debate with trump. Maybe making plaster handprints, a mud fight, finger painting, a name calling contest, or bobbing for apples would be more appropriate.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

Of course Trump objects to it -- he cannot speak to anything of value and/or common sense, so he doesn't want to allow others to do so either, instead objecting and screaming as the do. He's a two-year old in a 74-year-old man's body. Even in the town hall the other day, one-to-one, he couldn't stop trying to shout over the moderator, "Why do I have to denounce QAnon, whom I know nothing about except that I know this and that?? What about Joe Biden? What about him? not fair! Not FAIR!!" I hope they use the bottom in ANY case where these guys will not let the other speak, but we know full well it'll be 95% Trump interrupting and shouting and behaving like a child.

Whiners. If Trump were that great a candidate he could beat any opponent no matter what.

Because you honestly don't want to see your pathetic candidate creamed again?

It will be interesting to see if Biden is asked any hard questions at this debate.

It blows my mind that anyone believes anything Trump says, and that he is allowed to get away with it. Trump is a liar. Period.

I don't believe a lot of what Trump says. He is a world class BS artist. But so what? I care more about what he does than what he says.

It also says a lot that people here can't have a rational discussion without resulting to peurile insults and personal attacks- ironically the very thing they decry Trump for. I guess that is because they can't argue the actual accomplishments made by the current administration...

As for the debate, it will be interesting to see if the two minute rule helps or hurts Biden. He seems to run out of gas a lot, doesn't have the energy or focus that he used to. IF Trump were wise, he would let Biden ramble on and hang himself on his own words. He was incoherent at times in the town hall debate, making numerous dubious claims and improbable statements that the mass media just let pass unchallenged.

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

more changes to help Biden. The moderator spent Christmas with the Obamas, of course.

-15 ( +6 / -21 )

Just give trump enough rope, he’ll do the rest.

Really looking forward to this one, it’s going to be a blast. trump is going to go totally off the rails over the next couple of weeks.

They should put a mute button on his mouth.

more changes to help Biden. The moderator spent Christmas with the Obamas, of course.

Wow, sounds like it’s game over then. Biden already won it. Guess he won’t need a microphone cunningly disguised as a loose thread. Poor trump, why can’t he ever get a break?

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Does it have to be just for the debate?

I'm happy to chip in for a permanent mute button for him.

Whiners.

Dems have been for 4 years....depressing...

If Trump were that great a candidate he could beat any opponent no matter what.

True, if Democrats didn’t cheat, you are so right on that.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

Jimizo: perhaps it would be more accurate to get straight to the root of the matter and say, "he's learned how to be a politician"...

But some of the stuff that Biden came up with in the town hall? Amazing. Telling police to just shoot violent criminals in the leg. Good luck with that one. Claiming his father saw a gay couple kissing in public in 1960's Scranton Pennsylvania and approved. Give me a break.

The topic selection is also telling. The topics are: COVID-19, American Families, Race in America, Climate Change, National Security and Leadership.

If you see polls of what Americans care most about in the election, the top answers (according to Pew Research) are: Economy, health care, Supreme Court, Coronavirus, violent crime, and foreign policy.

I don't see a lot of crossover there, perhaps 2 topics at most. I wonder why crime, the court, and foreign policy are being ignored....

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

The Democrats don't need to worry about how this debate goes, they have other reasons to panic:

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

this whole mute button thing is just a distraction to cover up with foreign policy and the economy are not topics but climate change (again), race (again) and COVID (again) are.

@Ego Sum Lux Mundi Thanks for the link. Very interesting. Seems the huge turnout at Trump's rallies and the pathetic showing at Biden's appearances is a more accurate poll than the ones that have Biden ahead 10-15 points.

-11 ( +6 / -17 )

True, if Democrats didn’t cheat, you are so right on that.

The moderator spent Christmas with the Obamas, of course

Making excuses before it’s even started. Shows how much confidence you have in your guy. Looking forward to fallout frenzy Friday!

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Jimizo: perhaps it would be more accurate to get straight to the root of the matter and say, "he's learned how to be a politician".

It wouldn’t be more accurate. He was a liar before he became a politician and was doing this early in his political career.

Muslims dancing in NY on 9/11? Non-existent sex tapes? His father was born in Germany? We can go on here.

These aren’t exaggerations. They aren’t even for political gain.

I know you like his sometimes conservative policies. but let’s keep it honest.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

I find it interesting that up until now Trump supporters here have been saying Biden can’t talk for two minutes and, if he were forced to, he would destroy himself. They said Trump would be smart to just let Biden talk. Well, now that Biden, actually each candidate, gets two full minutes to talk uninterrupted because the opponent’s mic is muted, there beside themselves. It’s pretty obvious they are more concerned about Trump having two minutes, without Biden interrupting, and their worried.

Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Yes, that was the biggest mistake of Trump in debate one.

Right when Biden was about to say something really insane, Trump cut him off. Let him speak as much as possible. but that only works if the moderator forces him to answer the question, which they wont.

-11 ( +5 / -16 )

that only works if the moderator forces him to answer the question, which they wont.

Your batting average in predictions isn’t too promising at the moment. Remember last week when you predicted trump would dominate the ratings and actually Biden gave him a royal whupping?

3 ( +8 / -5 )

yes, and I explained why. I even watched Biden Town Hall instead myself. the "ratings" only capture TV sets, you know?

What happened to Obama and Joe going out and campaigning together? that was supposed to be Wednesday but now Joe has "called a lid" all week.

Obama knows whats coming, I will be very surprised if he actually campaigns for Joe in person.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

I'm not sure if I can ever remember a candidate with NO public appearances for 4 straight days like this. Especially within 2 weeks of the election. There has to be something going on, and not just 'debate prep'. Maybe they are hoping to call a lid on the blossoming scandal involving the entire Biden family and various foreign schemes as well. I mean, I get that he is trying to run out the clock, but it might be a huge mistake to put that much faith in the polling numbers, especially given what happened in 2016.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Of course Trump objects to it -- he cannot speak to anything of value and/or common sense, so he doesn't want to allow others to do so either, instead objecting and screaming as the do. He's a two-year old in a 74-year-old man's body.

And a lot fitter than most his age.

Even in the town hall the other day, one-to-one, he couldn't stop trying to shout over the moderator,

Because the moderator (a partisan Hillary supporter wouldn’t let him) so yeah, makes sense to me.

"Why do I have to denounce QAnon, whom I know nothing about except that I know this and that?? What about Joe Biden? What about him? not fair! Not FAIR!!"

Yes, why is it that liberals give pass to the people that have destroyed so many cities namely Antifa and BLM and where are these leaders and why aren’t they helping these communities and why do they support the violence and won’t back police funding or a crackdown on these thugs, that question was not driven home to Biden.

I hope they use the bottom in ANY case where these guys will not let the other speak, but we know full well it'll be 95% Trump interrupting and shouting and behaving like a child.

If Biden continues to get snowball questions and the moderators won’t ask, Trump should.

-15 ( +3 / -18 )

Trump will definitely be speaking about foreign policy.

When they inevitably ask him about white supremacy again, he should just say "already answered that" and pivot to foreign policy and the economy.

Those should be every answer, regardless of question. Foreign policy and economy.

While Joe will be asked about what flavor ice cream he ordered.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

The mute button caused by Trump outbursts from first debate.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Muting is a good idea, or even turning the volume down so low that Trump would sound like a mouse screaming. Or they could pass out yellow cards and then red cards like in soccer, and once you get the red card your microphone is turned off when the other is speaking.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

I'd also like to see a mute button on the moderator. Let the candidates answer without being badgered. Also it would be great for the mods to just get the hell out of the way and let the candidates go at it.

The town halls were frankly ridiculous. The Trump event was scheduled 60 minutes, and the moderator debated the President for the first 24 before deigning to allow a question from the audience. That's nearly half the alloted time! The Biden event? Took all of 30 seconds before the first question from the audience- from a Democrat supporter of course. But the contrast couldn't be more clear.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

it's ridiculous, and then they cut you off whenever they want," Trump said in an Oct 8 interview on Fox Business.

No, not "whenever they want". They cut you off when you fail to abide by the mutually agreed conditions under which the debate takes place. For example, if this is like the first debate you'll get cut off if you speak for more than 2 minutes in your initial response, and you'll get cut off if you constantly interrupt the other candidate when they're doing their allotted 2 minutes. Or if you persistently, constantly, endlessly, boringly interrupt the other speaker whenever you feel like it.

If you don't want to be muted, stick to the conditions of the debate that both parties agreed to prior.

I'll be watching on Thursday (Friday morning my time). I anticipate Trump sticking to none of the above conditions, and predict a nervous breakdown for whoever's handling the muting.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

This format with a mute is going to turn into a massacre of Trump.

Biden will outline broadly policies and ideals. Trump will just squander his time insulting Joe and lying.

If Trump is smart he’ll call in sick!

Have any of you seen the NHK broadcast of the first debate with Japanese translators trying to translate that trainwreck? I'd feel bad for them except they are employed by NHK.

To translate what Spinning Plates said:

"Biden will randomly mumble carefully memorized bromides prepared for him by his handlers. Occasionally he will interject with irrelevant and possibly false personal tales from the old days in Scranton.

Trump will attempt to list genuine achievements and turn the debate to issues the voters actually care about, over the fervent and constant objections of the moderator."

It’s sufficient only to send the mutes, beeps and drink breaks. Bring some funny economy strengthening commercials instead. lol

0 ( +0 / -0 )

did both sides agree to suddenly introduce a mute button?

"Suddenly"? The possibility/probability of a mute button has been talked about since the day after the first debate, three weeks ago by now. Plenty of time for all parties to think about it.

Your guy knew the rules before the first debate, and if he didn't he was constantly reminded of them whenever the moderator got a word in edgewise. You can't whine about a rule change after that display. And if Trump doesn't like it, he doesn't have to be there. If he is, then he's going to have to stick by the rules. Or get muted.

Same goes for Biden. Did you forget that?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Jimizo, if you check the topics chosen for the debate, they do not reflect what voters are concerned about. Why is that? Why spend so much time on social issues and so little/no time on the economy and foreign policy?

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Jimizo, if you check the topics chosen for the debate, they do not reflect what voters are concerned about. Why is that? Why spend so much time on social issues and so little/no time on the economy and foreign policy?

Why even have pre-approved topics for their "debate"? I put debate in quotes because it's not even a real debate. They don't present two sides to an argument. It's just a manhood measuring contest.

They should be asked tough questions about tough topics and made to squirm under the bright lights if they're not prepared for any possibilities. Having a pre-thought answer to a pre-approved question is complete nonsense.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Jimizo, if you check the topics chosen for the debate, they do not reflect what voters are concerned about. Why is that? Why spend so much time on social issues and so little/no time on the economy and foreign policy?

I was replying to your idea of what Trump wants to do in debates. Based on his last travesty, he wants to interrupt, have a crack at Biden’s kid, spread conspiracy theories, have a go at the media, lie, play the victim on Covid and talk in the past tense about his achievements on the economy.

It bore no resemblance whatsoever to what you said Trump wants to do in debates. Maybe he will act like a house trained adult this time, but don’t put your house on it.

Oh, hang on. How did he perform in the second debate which never took place but he said he destroyed Biden in?

I missed that one.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Sneezy, I was going by the official transcript, freely available on line. Also, the audience only was able to ask a grand total of 7 questions in the event. Each of which was stepped on and followed up by none other than the "moderator" rather than the audience member.

If you have other information, I would be glad to check it out.

How did you expect Trump to get back the 10 trillion that "was lost under Obama"?

I expect Trump to keep increasing our powerful economy/business to the point where we generate more money. more money earned= more tax money received at the same or even lower tax rate.

It's normal for the voter to ask their question, and then not speak again unless directly questioned by the candidate. You can see previous town hall debates for this. It would ordinarily be unusual for the candidate to interact mainly with the moderator, but that's because they would normally be expected to interact with their opponent. When Trump decided to run away from the debate, this means that the moderator is the one who needs to interact with him.

Trump agreed to the debate rules that there would be no interrupting. He consistently broke them. So to solve that problem a mute button will be used. And now Trump objects to that. ....yea right. Total idiot.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

We can quibble about the transcripts and the exact timing, but the larger point still stands. The two town halls were held VERY differently, with very different agendas on the part of the moderators. The candidates were treated far differently, the public was treated differently, the moderators took their roles far differently too.

My premise is that the moderators need to stay out of the way, stop editorializing, and not be a participant in the event. Ms. Guthrie seemed to think it was 'her' hour and that the questions from the audience were mere setup lines for her to launch into her own line of questioning. It was quite disrespectful to the people who attended. Stephanopoulis (sp) at least gave Biden the opportunity to interact more with the crowd and make his points without constant interruptions.

If Trump objects to a mute button, I suggest duct tape for his pouty burger hole.

The two town halls were held VERY differently, with very different agendas on the part of the moderators. The candidates were treated far differently, the public was treated differently, the moderators took their roles far differently too.

If Trump hadn't run away, this wouldn't be the case. The networks have different ways of doing things, and by necessity had to use different moderators. If Trump doesn't like it, he has no-one to blame but himself.

We don't like the topics...

We don't like the Moderator....

We don't like the mute button...

WHAAAAAAA.....

Still doesn't hold a candle to the crying I have heard from you and your buddies since Hillary LOST. For some reason you didn't come through with your promise on giving up your U.S. citizenship. hmmmm

I guess you confused me with Trump....

And I sure hope you have plenty of tissues for Nov 4th....you're going to need them...

The Trump comedy show...

Appoints Dr Fauci to his task force....

Then retweets that Fauci should be fired...

But uses Fauci in his campaign ad (out of context)...

Then says Fauci is an idiot...

He is, he isn't....he is, he isn't....Trump is starting to sound like Crazy Rudy...

The vast majority of people in the world wish there were a mute button for Trump. He couldn’t stop his lips from flapping of his life depended on it; just watch one of his depositions.

Looking forward to hearing what Biden has to dsay about being in the pay of China and Russia and Ukraine.

This debunked conspiracy theory lives on in the minds of conservatives.

On the subject(s) of moderators and topics, those were chosen and agreed to by both sides before the debates began. Complaining about them now is a pitiful excuse to deflect Trump’s inevitably poor performance in advance.

The mute button came about because Trump would not, could not follow the rules that his own team agreed to in advance.

Just imagine a situation in which you are such a petulant man-child that other people have to cut off your mike because you cannot follow agreed norms of behavior?

On a separate note, when you are down to arguing about were the commercials edited out or not, you’re losing the argument. Bigly.

at one point provoking Biden to snap: "Will you shut up, man?"*

That I will miss!!

Never thought I'd live to see the day when we have such an immature president that you need to keep him quiet by force!!!

He’s got a point there!

How debunked exactly?  Show me some concrete evidence of this being disproven.  As opposed to it being blocked on social media or some vague NYT article?

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

It amazes me that we have some credsible evidence of a possible President and family being corrupt and beholden to foreign countries and all of the liberals just skate over it.  Trump has a recorded conversation with a foreign leader and they try impeach him.....

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Show me the evidence that it’s true. The burden of proof rests on the accuser.

As for reasons why it is likely false.....

The Chain of custody

No other news org can confirm.

The FBI has not been granted access to the raw data which would enable them to examine IPs, digital distortion, etc.

Oh, and the fact that Trump is flailing and desperate.

You really think it's credible?

Trump is really going to talk about adult Children profiting off their father’s name and position?

Seriously?

So, with the mute button, this might only be the 2nd worst debate in modern American political history. Yay.

It amazes me that you could type that with a straight face.

Forget possible, we've got an actual one doing that and you've always been happy to 'just skate over it'

I simply want Biden to quit lying that he isnt going to raise taxes, except on people who make less than $400,00.

By removing the Trump tax cuts, he is in fact raising taxes on everyone.

Why cant he tell the truth?

Fun fact, the president can't unilaterally raise or lower taxes. It depends on congress to change tax laws. The president can and often does recommend tax changes, but the legislation has to start in the House of Representatives. So even if Biden wants to "raise taxes", would the House of Representatives follow along with his recommendation?
