First were active Western support and direct participation in the unlawful coup d'etat in Ukraine (by the way, what about interference in internal affairs?), McCain, Nuland, EU leaders on the streets of Kiev with their inflammatory speeches, and only then there was the Crimean referendum. The Ukrainian boats intruded into Russian territorial waters early in the morning of 25th, and only in the evening, about 8 pm, the Russian coast guard ships, after all their warnings failed, opened fire and captured the intruders. The Russians had the whole day to ready the blockship.

With this loss Putin's approval rating is still high. Compare it with Poroshenko's dismal rating in less then half year before elections, coupled with economic meltdown. When they saw that they couldn't get around it, they decided to turn back around. And that's when the Russians went after them.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he did not like what was happening between Russia and Ukraine and was working with European leaders on the situation.

Trump will wait until Putin calls to tell him Russia's not trying to re-establish and expand its empire, that it can't be proved there are Russian forces already in Ukraine, that it's just the 'western' media fabricating stories, and tell Trump 'the west is worse'.

Then Trump will say he agrees with Putin, just like Trump agreed with Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud when he said he knew nothing about Khashoggi's murder.
