China has caused many nations, including past enemies, to become friends.
Marc Lowe
Outstanding developments continue at a rapid pace. China has isolated itself from every nation that is worth anything. Vietnam doing this gesture is very important. And, by using the USS Ronald Reagan to do so is very profound. America, Japan and Vietnam are now best friends and allies in standing up to the sandbox bully of the CCP.

Ronald Reagan must be turning in his grave. Haha. Chill the brewskis and turn on the red light, Roxanne.

I think the cozying of the Republicans up to Russia is causing a lot of cold warriors to turn in their graves.
EFD
Sure.
Calling the dictator of China a dictator and unifying a regional force to oppose Chinese hegemony constitutes “cozying up”.
In bizarro-world.

US carrier Reagan and 4 warships went to a disputed island-coral reef between China and the Philippines in South China Sea, to intimidate China in support of the Philippines. China sent 4 warships accompanied the U.S. carrier group.
A Chinese Air Force H6K bomber skimmed above the sea, escaped the radar and approached Reagan aircraft carrier, assisted by Chinese Air Force electronic warfare warplanes. At a short distance of 40 km, Chinese H6K bomber illuminated the carrier using it fire-control radar, flew higher to be seen by Reagan radar, Reagan made an emergency 90 degree evasive turn and immediate escaped and left South China Sea.
This is currently huge news in China, a significant victory for China.

Oh i don't know, The US were very very happy to build up the chinese economy,by buying as much cheap stuff as possible in the deluded hope the people might want something more like democracy. Republicans new it. Wanted it, and built a big monster that could go toe to toe with the US. Might be a situation when if the chinese economy sneezes, the world catches a cold. Time to build away from china, let them feel the pain of high unemployment, and see how corrupt and manipulative the CCP is. Why in the world did we get into bed with a communist country? Profits! China good. Cuba BAD. seriously, how does that work out? I don't see Cuba wanting to invade anyone any time soon.

The Vietnamese love Americans. A recent poll showed that pro-US sentiment there is 2nd highest of all countries in the world, after Poland.

How odd. Isn’t Vietnam a one party communist state?
but they gonna help fight the authoritarians and the communists?
Fighto!
The Vietnamese would choose to help the US against China every day of the week. Just as WW2 was 80 years ago, the US involvement in the Vietnam war ended almost 5 decades ago. Smart nations move on.
Very true. The Vietnamese think very highly of the US - and Japan for that matter.

The attack group should next visit Taiwan, drill with latter's nacy and airforce, and sail up to Japan via the west side of the center-line of the Taiwan Strait.

Has China EVER have a battle victory?
I can't thinknof any in the last 100 years or more.
1glenn
The last time China invaded Vietnam was in 1979. Even while helping to arm the North Vietnamese against the Americans, they found time to go to war with Vietnam.
Vietnam takes the threat from China seriously.
theFu
Hard to say. Is Vietnam or Korea or Tibet or Hong Kong a "battle victory"? They stolen "surface features" from the Philippines successfully too.
China likes to use proxy wars to redirect attention, while their other hand is doing something else.
OssanAmerica
Why? Reagan was staunchly anti-communist, even before he became President.
deanzaZZR
Meanwhile, Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has arrived in Beijing.

I'm sorry the truth causes you so much pain. It's relevant 1) because someone brought up what anticommunists of the past would think and 2) Russia at least historically was an ally of Vietnam but Russia is a clear part of the dictatorship axis with China these days.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Why do I think this is complete bs? The Ronald Reagan made it to Vietnam successfully. Wait until the next Taiwan strait transit if you want to claim you turned back a US ship. Will never happen. Also China has NO rights on those reefs. Sail right up to them I say.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Clearly not Vietnam as they were sent packing from there. In Korea, Mao tacitly approved of the invasion and then had to send in troops to secure the status quo along with massive help from Moscow. Illegally building islands is hardly a battle victory, especially when opposed by just the Philippines.

As someone stationed in I Corps (the area DaNang was part of) 53 years ago, it’s hard to process this. The Vietnamese shooting at me didn’t seem to love me.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
Yrral
Peter, glad you got back, you should of not been sent to this lost cause in the first, think of all others that did make it back ,and no will be held accountable

Sometimes it’s not the battle but the results. Vietnam was a victory.
It was a proxy war. In the end China had the U.S. remove its military base, all military personnel and nuclear weapons from Taiwan. It was a part of the US Taiwan Defense Command and the weapons of mass destruction were in Tainan Air Force Base. Nixon had no choice but to agree and this was completed by 1974.
Plus alpha, the U.S. also had to agree to recognize China in the UN, agree to a One China policy, say Taiwan is a part of China and kick Taiwan out of the UN. The US said yes to all of the above.
If you can’t see this as a victory for China I don’t know what is. You are in denial. The conditions demanded are akin to a peace plan to end war. In essence the US wanted out of Vietnam.
And this was beautifully done with the peace plan the following year in Paris. It could have continued and Peter Neil may not have returned. Save the optics of Americans escaping from the helicopter on the rooftop of their Embassy, the China gave US face.
deanzaZZR
Last I checked the Vietnamese Communist Party was in charge in Hanoi.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Lololol. Not for China it wasn't. Vietnam kept control of Cambodia the whole time.
If you don't see that as the misguided consequences of normalizing relations with China, you are deluding yourself. The US could have kept all of that stuff if it wanted to.
Wasn't done with the help of China. North Vietnam would never have negotiated away their territory for China. Was done with American bombs.
1) Wasn't Americans on the rooftop and 2) China didn't "give" anybody face. They lost face by subsequently also losing to Vietnam.

a) remove US military bases from Taiwain
b) remove all military personnel from Taiwan
c) remove all nuclear weapons from Taiwan
d) recognize Communist China UN membership during the Cold War
e) adhere to a One China policy
f) acknowledge Taiwan is a part of China
g) reject Taiwan's UN membership.
In American English, throw Taiwan underneath the bus. The US said okay, we will do it and did it. There is no way to argue this but "yeah but we wanted to do that anyway."

It's not as if one day China decided to invade Vietnam. It's more complicated than that. Three players: Soviet Union, Vietmam, and China.FWIW, strong countries provide for the little countries and have little minions or vassal states. I am positive we can agree on this right. Here are examples.
US: Ukraine
US: Japan and Korea
US: Australia
US: Germany
and in the historical context of this article
China: Cambodia
Vietnam joined Moscow as a mutual defense-treaty ally and invaded and toppled China’s Maoist puppet government, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. China punishes Vietnam but from the Western perspective, as it is often the case, it is simply China wanting to expand and take territory from Vietnam.
The Qing expanded Chinese territory but this doesn't mean that the war in 1979 was an act of expansionism. If the Chinese labeled US military presence in its south border as the US eyeing Mexico and seeking to expand, it would not be accurate. Territorial conquest was not China’s strategic intent.
Thankfully, the Soviets and the Vietnamese were able to topple the Khmer Rouge.
TaiwanIsNotChina
There's no way to argue this as the conditions for normalizing relations. No way this was about Vietnam as China had and has no pull there.

I'm sorry, all I'm hearing is that this was a LOSS for China.

The Vietnam War had ended by then. Do Americans really believe the U.S. didn’t lose the Vietnam War? I don’t know what your media tells you but the US lost.
1979 War, when the Vietnamese in the south aligned with the Soviets in the north is what Americans use to deflect attention from Vietnam War.
And where is the news of the U.S. carrier being chased away by the Chinese?
TaiwanIsNotChina
No. But we know the Chinese lost their Vietnam war as well.
Because it is a CCP fantasy. The carrier was headed to Vietnam and just making a stopover to invalidate China's illegal claims.

The Vietnam War 1954-1975 - 20 years
This was the longest war in American history and the most unpopular American war of the 20th century. It resulted in nearly 60,000 American deaths and an estimated 2 million Vietnamese deaths. The US is surely not one of those "smart" nations that "move on."
China's war with Vietnam
Feb 17 to March 18, 1979 - 1 month
Smart nations move on.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Smart nations are honest about their capabilities. You seem to have a problem being honest about China's like thinking you ran off a carrier with a targeting laser.
You should take away we don't quit easily.
How many 10s of thousands of mainlanders will die if China tries to take Taiwan? 100s of thousands? And that is if it doesn't go nuclear.

Chinese naval training ship was in Vietnam on goodwill visit. The Japanese navy was also in Vietnam. Many are visiting Vietnam.
The news is that the Vietnamese foreign minister is currently in Beijing to work on the China-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation. This is postive for both countries. China's is Vietnam's largest trading partner.
Nguyen Huu Minh
The cost that Nixon and Kissinger made in 1974 by abandoning South VN to the communist North VN and moving out of the Philippines is mounting high just because Nixon and Kissinger had underestimated the CCP, and the subsequent US governments had overestimated Chinese contribution to world economy. The US and the West have no knowledge how China operates at all. Now they are trying to win back Southeast Asian countries.
The US has always focussed on the main adversary and ignored those influenced by it. China is more cunning by focussing on the lesser important countries while creating fears in those countries by coercion, weakening the US by removing those countries which would be allied with the US in the act of turning them into countries ruled by dictators.
If the US focus on military only, ignoring ideological, economical aspects of war then it would be tough to win against the CCP.
Anyway, Vietnamese people always wholeheartedly welcome the US visits but the fact that the Vietnamese communist official went to China during the US visit is to soften the blow and confirm their alliance with the CCP says it all.
