Xi and the CCP must really regret not having the previous guy who bent down to their every whim...and continues to be their long-term business partner...

U.S. invitation of Taiwan to democracy summit angers China

Good. To hell with the CCP and what they think

Good job! Taiwan is its own country. It is time that they are recognized.

Boo-hoo China. Maybe if you whine some more, the rest of us will care less.

The preoccupation with Trump is nonsensical. He is no longer president. Besides, everytime someone brings up Trump it reminds people that the biden’s pulled billions out of Taiwan on business trips on the taxpayers dime. His son still holds a 10% share of a company with a relationship with the CCP

Given his copious use of executive orders to hinder the US energy sector it’s hard to tell whether biden truly wishes to promote democracy or if he is seeking to provide his old friend Xi with a pretext to invade Taiwan.

This is a good move. Step by step Taiwan needs to be recognized and fully accepted by the international community. The Chinese dictatorship can take a long walk off a short pier.

If Trump were to get out of politics, and was no longer leading an anti-democracy movement in the US, I might agree with you, but given the power he has over his QGOP sect and millions of followers and how he continues to influence US politics, I think concerns about Trump and his global alt right followers make sense. But then I am anti-authoritarian, and do not want to see the US turned completely over to violent far rightists and the fossil establishment they support.

Invite's are to democratically elected governments of which Taiwan is one. It should surprise nobody.

It may have applied to Hong Kong if it had become democratic as the treaty with the UK stipulated.

The CCP should be happy for Taiwan but it fails to understand that Taiwan is already independent and has been since the end of the Chinese civil war.

Taiwan is part of China as the UK is part of Europe. Both are independent sovereign states. The only difference is the CCP belligerently claims Taiwan when it has no right to.

This get together for democracies should be interesting. Lets see what comes from it, if anything.

The summit makes good on a pledge President Joe Biden made during his campaign,

Excellent--he kept pledge.

and it reflects his emphasis on returning the U.S. to a global leadership position among world democracies.

The US hadn't been in such a strong global leadership position as under Trump since the end of WWII.

Nothing more authoritarian than communist, or socialist regimes.

But you prefer to have the US turned over to violent leftists? How many leftist protests took place over the last two years in the US? And how many contained violence?

The US hadn't been in such a strong global leadership position as under Trump

The US has ZERO global leadership under Trump. None at all.

Good. The western bully is the only one who can keep the eastern bully in check.

Only folks that see it that way in the US are authoritarian fascists barely hiding behind the facade of "conservatism" that the GOP used to represent. And the fact you can't tell the difference between socialism (driven by the will of and well being of the people) and communism (authoritarianism driven to have the people serve the government in today's terms) just keeps driving the point home how off the wall the GOP "die hards" have gotten. Need I remind you that America's closest allies are majority socialist democracies. The only reason you've got your undergarments in a twist is because it isn't "your" guy and based on super toxic partisanship goggles. It's even worse you think that the previous president was showing strong global leadership...

Taiwan worked hard to get where it is today, and they suffered through their own dictatorships and tyrants after the ROC government fled there. The CCP thinks there should be no shred of political opposition which is why they've set their eyes on Taiwan.

The Biden administration has invited Taiwan to its Summit for Democracy next month, the State Department announced, prompting sharp criticism from China, which considers the self-ruled island as its territory.

For once the incompetent Biden admin did something right. Credit for that.

A couple years ago, I thought that any war with China would be impossible. However, considering that the US is pressuring both Taiwan and South Korea to build fabs in America, I believe our leaders think war is a very real possibility. If China captures Taiwan, they could sanction America by withholding access to low-distance nodes.

The US can abandon Taiwan after TSMC and Intel finish building 2-nm and 3-nm fabs in America.

The American inviting the Israeli regime to the summit shows that the exclusion of China had nothing to do with the form of government or any human rights concerns. Indeed, the long list of democracies that weren't invited shows that the summit isn't about democracy, but rather about the opposite of democracy, imperialism.

I don’t see much difference between the authoritarianism of the mob and of the strongman. It isn’t too hard to get people to vote away their freedom in exchange for comfort provided by others. What I don’t understand is the Left’s insistence on using the force of government to realize their socialist goals. They could easily create voluntary associations as has been done many times in the past. They insist on government force in order to coerce those recalcitrants that refuse to give up their personal liberties in exchange for personal comfort.
