RIP.

Didn't agree with everything he said or did, but he's a stand up guy.

RIP John McCain you are an American hero. This man went through hell and did not complain, i salute his ability to face the bad and come out on top.

11 ( +18 / -7 )

While I rarely agreed with the senator's politics, I always knew he made decisions with integrity. I will forever be grateful for his saving the ACA and for standing up for integrity and honesty.

11 ( +18 / -7 )

During a 2007 campaign rally in front of his own supporters, he admonished a republican woman voter for saying that Obama was a "muslim" and that she "didn't trust him." He stuck up for his opponent in front of his own supporters and got booed for it.

That's real political courage, folks. I dare anyone to find a contemporary politician with such strong character.

Senator, you will be sorely missed.

11 ( +18 / -7 )

McCain and the Democrats did a great disservice to the nation by voting against the repeal of Obamacare. .

Totally Serrano, let's kill all the poor people. Hey Serrano, what was Donny's solution? Oh, right.. Hahaha hahaha

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Another great American gone. Yes - Salute the gentleman, whatever your political affiliation.

Now to practical matters. McCain was unpredictable but ultimately a pragmatist, which made him a centrist, an increasingly rare breed in the GOP. One might be concerned about who will replace him.

“He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

Donald J Trump

R.I.P.

I personally didn’t have a problem if McCain didn’t like Trump for the right reasons, but he disliked him for the wrong reasons personally, less politically that was one of the problems I had against McCain, if he voted against the GOP it was obviously because he didn’t like Trump and nothing more and that’s something that he will be remembered for as well and since he knew of his slow but sure eminent demise, he was going to stick it to the President any chance he could and that have never been, but McCain was a man with pride and a long family history of serving and he did the one thing he should have been aware of that was to humiliate and embarrass Trump and he didn’t reckon with Trump going on the offense against him, some say that was disrespectful, some say it was justified, whichever side you fall on, the hatred and animosity between the two was strong that’s for sure. But both are men and both fallible as well as emotional and I do understand both sides.

WRONG!!

John McCain hated Trump for all the right reasons.

He new that Trump is everything a POTUS should not be, a fact borne out the actions of the Cesspool Landlord since he took up residence in the White House.

He could see from the outset that the coward Trump would try to destroy everything that he, and generations of American Service Men before him, fought for, and gave their lives to protect.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

President Donald Trump, who once mocked McCain's war record, said he sent his "deepest sympathies and respect."

He's changed his tune, I must say.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

miyam: He was a undoubtedly an American hero but would have been more aligned politically as a "moderate" war hawk Democrat.

This is the third time I’ve seen this, describing McCain as a moderate Democrat. Looks like it’s a talking point being distributed to conservatives to belittle his career in their eyes. Obviously it’s very effective propaganda if it’s being used so much across several sites.

Bass: Trump going on the offense against him, some say that was disrespectful, some say it was justified

Sure, mocking his time an a POW. Apparently sometimes that’s justified in your eyes. I suppose that’s one way we are different.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

McCain will forever be remember as the guy who stopped repeal of the ACA. That was a pretty big vote, regardless of which side you may have been on.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

ike - Yes, that was utter stupidity, but not entirely of his own doing (thought the buck must stop somewhere). Perhaps that's testament to the danger of hiring elderly as leaders - there are pluses and minuses. And then, he was also a member of the "Keating Five," a bipartisan group of swindlers.

But on the occasion of the death of a mortal - someone who has done good and also made mistakes - let's remember the good.

6 ( +14 / -8 )

people falling over themselves all over the place to give him praise. But he was a warmonger later in life, in spite of his hero status

RIP to John McCain, but not for his later years

6 ( +10 / -4 )

When did I mock the man?

Nobody said you did. Trump mocked McCain for having been captured. Read Super’s post again.

Do you consider it disrespectful or justified to diss a guy as not being a hero because he was “just” a POW? Trump trashed McCain’s military service and courage because he didn’t like McCain’s criticism. What a manly man Trump is. Now Trump sends a generic tweet offering not a word about McCain’s life or service to his country because Trump doesn’t like people who don’t kiss his rear end.

I guess Trumpsters are OK with that. This is their American dream.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

For those who do not know, this is what Trump said about McCain:

“He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

And now, Trump has the gall to tweet:

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

Trump's HYPOCRISY and CYNICISM are utterly abhorrent. The rest of the world joins America in pouring CONDEMNATION and SCORN on this failing president.

S---L---I---M---Y!

6 ( +7 / -1 )

That’s how they grew up, tough people, so I’m not surprised.

not tough enough to put his life on the line for his country. those bonespurs could easily have been corrected with surgery, you know because he tough enough to handle the pain. But 5 draft dodges later hes still got those bone-spurs

you start insulting him and he’s throwing it right back at you, that’s it, get used to it.

half the time nobody says anything he just make a stupid comment about something he clearly know F/all about then the insults start flying back at him, hes entitled to defend himself as is anybody else, but he not entitle to make propganda statements about things when the facts clearly show hes wrong.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

RIP Senator. I didn't agree with his politics but I admired his fortitude and bravery.

And what a gent he was when that ignorant woman called his political rival an "arab". Most other candidates would have run with that, but he defended the man.

Fair play to ye.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Toughness comes in many forms, McCain was tough in some areas and the President in others.

Trump is not tough. Tough guys don’t insult POWs for being captured, women for their appearance, or reporters for their physical disabilities.

There are legitimate ways to disagree with people, but Trump is too thin skinned to control himself. Nothing manly or courageous about that.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

McCain decided last year to put his personal above his constituents

On the contrary, he put his constituents above party.

Which is what real politicians should be doing.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

I didn't agree with his policies for the most part, but his actions toward Trump in the past couple of years showed very clearly that he was truly was a servant of the country, doing what he thought was best for the country. Good on him, and may he rest in peace.

4 ( +13 / -9 )

This is the third time I’ve seen this, describing McCain as a moderate Democrat. Looks like it’s a talking point being distributed to conservatives to belittle his career in their eyes. Obviously it’s very effective propaganda if it’s being used so much across several sites.

Then why did the Republican party select him as their leader?

It's a silly argument. But they love to turn on themselves. Reminds me of the extreme leftists who jump on left-wing people who they feel aren't as extreme left as they should be.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Only past presidents and future president Pence invited to the funeral. Orange man is persona non grata.

RIP old dude you were on the right side of history...

4 ( +6 / -2 )

McCain really had an extraordinary life. Difficult in the extreme but long and eventful.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

and apparently, the President isn't immune either from scrutiny.

not apparently, HE ISNT immune to scrutiny. As the late Senator McCain rightly stated , Congress senators are the POTUS equals not his subordinates. If Trump had an ounce of military experience under his belt hed know and respect the difference.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

but there was No way he was going to give Trump a win. That was personal and every knew it.

Trump made it personal insulting him by belittling McCains 5yrs as a POW, for which he never apologized

he voted no because he thought the legislation was shite and it was. but you got to admit that thumbs down was epic his final Fyou to Trump. Hell be remembered as an American hero with a proud military family heritage navy boats named after his family and a legacy that rival many POTUS and he didnt even sit in the oval office, RIP John McCain

4 ( +4 / -0 )

No, literally almost always the left is saying something about this President and he will react

And that's why he can't do his job and keeps failing. He can't take the heat. If he would focus on his job and not care what people say (remember Nixon said you can't hate people who hate you) perhaps he would not have all those failures such as: No, wall, no Muslim ban, Trump care is skyrocketing in costs (go to the USA to visit and go to the ER? Just don't pay), Debt is up, no Hillary arrest. Many many more failures. And looks like NK is back at making the nukes. What's the point of having a good 401K return when I'm dead from nuclear bombs?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Tough implies being able to take a hit. Little-hands has shown he's unable to take criticism whatsoever, freaking out anytime anyone dares to criticize him. That's the opposite of tough.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

wish more "human" like him in gop. rip.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

@Strangerland

McCain talked a good game against Trump, but if you look at this actual voting record, he didn't do nearly enough to stand up to him. Even though McCain knew he was nearing the end, not going to run for re-election, and only a handful of GOP senate votes are enough to change the entire balance of power in the government, and surely knowing that Trump was a dangerous individual, he still toed the party line when it really mattered. This will have to factor into his legacy as well.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

I don’t remember this, but I think it shows why McCain garners respect from everyone but the extremists:

https://m.youtube.com/signin?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fpost_login&context=popup&feature=wl_button

Can you imagine Trump doing that? I think not.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

But the fact that he was a 6-term Senator shows much of what is wrong with US politics. We need term limits so that our Senators can vote for what is right, not what gets them elected next time.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Lets just look at Trumps tweet as insincere as they come, when his real thoughts were, good hes gone wonder if I can get a puppet senator in his place and get my wall approved by congress before the midterms.

"Tough people," indeed. I wonder just how quickly the North Vietnamese would have got Trump to say whatever they wanted, or how quickly he would have jumped at the prisoner exchange.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Very sad news. RIP John McCain. Than you for your service to our country right to the end.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well, there goes a decent GOP representative that still had some sanity left. There are still some left, but McCain was given presence.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Sad to hear of his passing. He was one of the few centrists left of either party.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

R.I.P John McCain.

Obamacare disaster

This "disaster" was invented by the Republicans. Make it medicare for all. Proof it would work by using a government system in Japan. Trump voters in Japan should be able to believe that.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

McCain was dubbed a "maverick" by the MSM, a euphemism for an ornery individual who sometimes strayed from his right-wing script, but I never liked him for his hypocritical, hawkish, uberpatriotic posturing, and his eagerness to cash in on his phony "war hero" shtick that was repeated ad nauseam until he almost believed it himself. As he neared his end, he finally found the courage to earn his maverick moniker by defying a deranged, loose cannon of a "Commander-in-Chief", recognizing that the devious and deviant Trump had out-witted them all and had high-jacked his party to usurp the highest office in the land. RIP.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

to repeal the ACA

The healthcare system is now worse under Trump. Medical costs are skyrocketing. Better stay in Japan with universal government healthcare.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

McCain was against publicly funded health care, universal health care, or health coverage mandates

Which was not good. I liked McCain, but I did not agree with him on this. But at least he was not a crude orange man.

So he was against a healthcare plan like the Obamacare disaster

Healthcare costs are skyrocketing under Trumpcare. He has failed at this like his wall and Muslim ban. The best thing to do if you are American in Japan and you have a medical emergency while visiting your hometown there is to not pay and just return to Japan- perfectly legal. That's my free choice. I'm not going to pay 50,000 dollars for a single broken finger. Make it someone else's problem. I'm out of there. Government healthcare works better than the system than the US has, look at all the Trump followers living in Japan and using the healthcare here. Proof.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Trulys good man and representative of his party. A huge contrast to what has followed.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Felt sorry for McCain having to be the Republican nominee after Bush's tenure. The campaign against him was he is old, white, Republican with military experience so he is just another war monger like Bush. Democrats were going to win no matter who was running.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

purchase health insurance nationwide

It's called Medicare for all, good idea. Did you know you can use your Japanese government healthcare to pay for overseas emergencies to a certain extent? Not only is Japanese universal care national, but it is INTERnational

[70] Instead, he favors tax credits of up to $5,000 for families to get health insurance.[71] His plan focused on enhancing competition in the health care industry as a way to lower costs.[72] To that end, McCain favored the Health Care Choice Act,[73]which would allow citizens to purchase health insurance nationwide instead of.....

You don't need all that garbage. Just made a universal Medicare plan. And before that is every implemented if you are in the USA and have a medical emergency that's like a zillion dollars more than it should be (and this is always the case) just board that plane back to Japan and say see ya. Do not pay a penny more than what your Japanese policy will.

Now to practical matters. McCain was unpredictable but ultimately a pragmatist, which made him a centrist, an increasingly rare breed in the GOP. One might be concerned about who will replace him.

Are you talking about the man who chose Sarah Palin for his running mate?

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

He was a good person but typical politician. How many of you people praising him actually voted for him when he ran for President? I did not and I am from Arizona..

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Madverts: "RIP old dude you were on the right side of history..."

Uh, no he wasn't. He was all for the Iraq War ( yeah, I know, so was I, but I already fessed up to that mistake ) and he was all for bombing Iran and Syria. So much for being on the right side of history, eh, Madverts?

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Didn't agree with everything he said or did, but he's a stand up guy.

I agree. Very sad news of his passing. I feel bad for what he went through as a war vet, fighter pilot, surviving a plane crash overcoming the odds, being tortured and surviving it to come back to the States to become a senator, he did it all, but this was one battle that he just couldn’t win and lost. I didn’t usually agree with the man politically and disagreed with him on many of the issues and policies, but he definitely was a hero respectively.

RIP

Huffington Post 2008: McCain mentally unfit to he president

Huffpo 2012: McCain a fool, a racist and a misogynist

Huffpo 2018: McCain a bipartisan american hero.

It’s sad the way that this man’s death is now being used by the media

This is exactly what I was talking about, the left NEVER liked McCain until he first criticized Trump and Trump hit him back with that infamous comment about his war record, that’s when the left sided with McCain and he became their Republican hero, before that, not a single positive word.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

not tough enough to put his life on the line for his country. those bonespurs could easily have been corrected with surgery, you know because he tough enough to handle the pain. But 5 draft dodges later hes still got those bone-spurs

But that has nothing to do with his right to his personal opinion. Toughness comes in many forms, McCain was tough in some areas and the President in others.

half the time nobody says anything he just make a stupid comment about something he clearly know F/all about then the insults start flying back at him,

No, literally almost always the left is saying something about this President and he will react, he’s just not going to sit by and take it.

hes entitled to defend himself as is anybody else, but he not entitle to make propganda statements about things when the facts clearly show hes wrong.

Well, that goes both ways.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

He was a undoubtedly an American hero but would have been more aligned politically as a "moderate" war hawk Democrat. Unfortunately, as a certified liberal with deep connections with fund-raising lobbyists and the swamp, he would have had trouble getting elected in AZ as a (D). Hope Gov. Ducey names a conservative to finish Sen. McCain's term. And certainly not another RINO in the mold of Sen. Flake.

@Jimizo

Of course. But McCain was particularly special in that category.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

John McCain hated Trump for all the right reasons.

No, I disagree completely, but that aside, we just agree to disagree on that.

He new that Trump is everything a POTUS should not be, a fact borne out the actions of the Cesspool Landlord since he took up residence in the White House.

That’s McCain’s opinion, you can make the same argument about the media or even the social norms which has changed. People, especially in middle America are tired of th Washington establishment swamp elites that could give a darn about the rest of us Americans. McCain was a different kind of American and Trump is as well. You dislike Trump, fair, I disliked McCain’s policies overall, that’s my right.

He could see from the outset that the coward Trump would try to destroy everything that he, and generations of American Service Men before him, fought for, and gave their lives to protect.

According to the markets and military, that’s not true, the left never cared about the military, now all of a sudden with McCain’s passing, the left care about the country. Spare me.

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

Trump's HYPOCRISY and CYNICISM are utterly abhorrent. The rest of the world joins America in pouring CONDEMNATION and SCORN on this failing president.

S---L---I---M---Y!

Like I said, the left didn’t give a fig about McCain until he jumped on the President and criticized his character, I saw it coming and I knew McCain’s decorative status wasn’t going to save him from Trump’s blowback. Trump has the right to feel about McCain anyway he wants and vice versa and McCain made that abundantly clear when he gave a thumbs down to repeal the ACA. McCain never liked it, always thought it was bad legislation, but there was No way he was going to give Trump a win. That was personal and every knew it.

not apparently, HE ISNT immune to scrutiny. As the late Senator McCain rightly stated , Congress senators are the POTUS equals not his subordinates.

Funny McCain said that. But he didn’t heed his own advice.

If Trump had an ounce of military experience under his belt hed know and respect the difference.

It’s not about that, as a man who is old school and grew up in Queens NY you just don’t let people walk over you. That’s how they grew up, tough people, so I’m not surprised. Trump doesn’t care what background you come from, you start insulting him and he’s throwing it right back at you, that’s it, get used to it.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

"And now, Trump has the gall to tweet:

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

"Trump's HYPOCRISY and CYNICISM are utterly abhorrent. The rest of the world joins America in pouring CONDEMNATION and SCORN on this failing president."

Come now, mukashi, admit it, there is nothing Trump could have tweeted that would meet with your approval.

wtf: "he voted no because he thought the legislation ( to repeal Obamacare ) was shite and it was."

Uh, check this out: ( Wikipedia )

McCain was against publicly funded health care, universal health care, or health coverage mandates.[70] Instead, he favors tax credits of up to $5,000 for families to get health insurance.[71] His plan focused on enhancing competition in the health care industry as a way to lower costs.[72] To that end, McCain favored the Health Care Choice Act,[73]which would allow citizens to purchase health insurance nationwide instead of limiting them to in-state companies, and to buy insurance through any organization or association they choose as well as through their employers or buying direct from an insurance company. In an October 2007 statement, McCain said: "In health care, we believe in enhancing the freedom of individuals to receive necessary and desired care. We do not believe in coercion and the use of state power to mandate care, coverage or costs."

So he was against a healthcare plan like the Obamacare disaster but then did a 180 and voted to continue what he was against because of his personal hatred for Trump.

Exactly, excellent post. Everyone knew this about McCain.

So he was against a healthcare plan like the Obamacare disaster but then did a 180 and voted to continue what he was against because of his personal hatred for Trump.

And this was the fundamental reason as to why so many Republicans hated him and that his personal animosity towards Trump was more important than his constituents. He knew he was terminally ill and he didn’t care, he just wanted not to give Trump a win and fro millions of conservatives that would be a defining moment of part of his legacy.

This is the third time I’ve seen this, describing McCain as a moderate Democrat. Looks like it’s a talking point being distributed to conservatives to belittle his career in their eyes. Obviously it’s very effective propaganda if it’s being used so much across several sites.

No, it’s just accurately say as to what he was politically, nothing more, for many Democrats he was perfect politician, in the same way how many Democrats don’t like Joe Lieberman who commonly and often goes against the grain with Democrats and sides with Republicans.

Sure, mocking his time an a POW. Apparently sometimes that’s justified in your eyes. I suppose that’s one way we are different.

When did I mock the man? I didn’t and you know it! Not once! Everything I criticized about McCain was him as a politician and if liberals don’t like it, I can’t help it, nor am I bothered by it. If you respect his service as a “politician” you are free to do so, I do not, that’s my choice. I respect the President and you don’t, that’s your choice.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Well, that depends on your point of view, some may say that about McCain and some do not. Some think he was an amazing politician, some do not, I am in the latter. Some respect him and some do not. As a man and a war hero, I respect him.

Maybe, the two didn’t like each other that’s No secret, had Trump died, McCain wouldn’t have shedded a single tear either. He probably would have been dancing on his grave. Hatred and disdain goes both ways.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Tough implies being able to take a hit. Little-hands has shown he's unable to take criticism whatsoever, freaking out anytime anyone dares to criticize him. That's the opposite of tough

That goes both ways. McCain decided last year to put his personal above his constituents, he knew it, but because of his degrading condition, he didn’t care, nothing tough, sneaky, spiteful and just pure personal emotional animosity.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Trump mocked McCain for having been captured. Read Super’s post again.

Yes, and McCain attacked Trump, for the life of me, I don't know what he was thinking that his status would insulate him from Trump snapping back. I saw that one coming a mile away and everyone that didn't know Trump was shocked, I wasn't. Now would I have said what Trump said to someone like McCain, I would not, but we are all different and Trump likes to fight (good on him for not taking any mess) and if someone gets in his face, he won't back down. McCain should've known that. But both have their opinions of each other and that's ok.

Do you consider it disrespectful or justified to diss a guy as not being a hero because he was “just” a POW?

Sure I thought it was wrong, but I'm not Trump. He can say what he wants, I mean, we can't stop it and to be honest that is why a lot of people like him even more than his policies, they like that he doesn't take crap and is willing to go to the mat with anyone.

Trump trashed McCain’s military service and courage because he didn’t like McCain’s criticism.

Which is his right. McCain is not immune to criticism, just like the Pope isn't immune and apparently, the President isn't immune either from scrutiny.

What a manly man Trump is. Now Trump sends a generic tweet offering not a word about McCain’s life or service to his country because Trump doesn’t like people who don’t kiss his rear end.

Ok, that's your personal opinion, you don't know what this man is thinking or feeling.

I guess Trumpsters are OK with that. This is their American dream.

I'm ok with it because we all have a right to our personal opinions, not only liberals.

Crazy: "I will forever be grateful for his saving the ACA"

You must be unaware that the ACA/Obamacare is basically a disaster. It's one of the reasons why Trump was elected. McCain and the Democrats did a great disservice to the nation by voting against the repeal of Obamacare.

Too bad he won't live to see Trump re-elected by a landslide in 2020.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

McCain talked a good game against Trump, but if you look at this actual voting record, he didn't do nearly enough to stand up to him.
