“Scrap the South Korean-U.S. alliance!” so the North Koreans can move in and we can be as happy and affluent as they are.

Summer-Show ! Offer some humanitarian aid to NK and they will keep quiet

As far as I know Opportunity Australia, led by David Bussau, tried to help the North by offering micro-loans for start-up businesses in 2008. What happened there?! Someone in the US State Dep't must have shoot down the idea?!... along with other sensible alternatives to sustain the economies of this rogue state.

The world is so tired of hearing NK "threaten" war and destruction over and over. My advice to NK would be get on with it already or keep quiet. Geopolitically, the threats have no meaning anymore as they are just ignored. Very few people actually believe NK will make good on its threats.

Well the Asian markets did ignore the latest North Korean saga this week-- though I'm not so sure whether it's the build-up that got ignored or Kimmy's latest warning....

After all it's only the start of the working week.

"Very few people actually believe NK will make good on its threats."

Just for fun. Does anyone think that NK has drawn up a plan to launch a Taepodong at the US carrier group? I mean, when NK threatens, do they really plan to do something, or do they just kind of laugh it off in the bar at 5:20 after a hard day at work?

Klein2: ...do they just kind of laugh it off in the bar...?

1st North Korean: What's a bar?

2nd North Korean: What's laughing?

But seriously, when everyone thinks they have the NK leadership figured out is probably the worst time for dismissive complacency.

Since its own people is about the only thing the NK leadership (and I use that term lightly) does control, one might predict a new round of purges, forced migrations, managed famines, and of course redoubled propaganda campaigns. Kim will get what he wants because he knows the West can't bear to see the North Korean people suffer.

The Cheonan incident did implicate the North-- let's not forget.... and right now is the right time to be sober over the consequences of a possible war with North Korea.

Right now is the wrong time for dismissive complacency, that goes for both sides.

The US is saying to North Korea, "you may draw when ready partner". Sort of like in the old west. Giving into the little creep will just bring provocations from the North.

Generally speaking, yes. A defense plan undoubtedly exists for "being invaded" by the United States. I wouldn't be surprised if they had one for every joint excercise we've done with SKorea, all predicated on the assumption that the excercise was a lead in to a full invasion. Whether such plans would be effective is a different matter.

That is how I feel...It's childish and ignorant (on sll sides involved)...NK might just be blowing hot air, but can you imagine if they did attack and all for what..one sunken ship and 46 sailors..Don't get me wrong it is sad but is it worth a war? Seriously others measures could be taken to prove a point.

The West doesn't care whether the North Korean people suffer. If so, the West would do something about the miles of brutal Gulags (concentration camps)currently in use such as making their full dismantle part of any deal for food and energy aid.

I think that's been North Korea's main position over the years....they believe the result will not come to war and so far they've gotten away with murder by playing that card quite a few times. I'm curious what their response will be this time. Maybe it will create a change in position....either positive or negative. We'll just have to wait and see.

Ridiculous posturing by both sides. The Dear Leader is China´s pitbull, and without Pekings approval, nothing happens there.

There is a lot of things in the is world I will never understand. NK is one of them, and besides I have better things to do.
