Super: "Trump’s been disappointing on China."

Pfffft! What does that make Obama, Bush and Clinton? They all did zero.

Admit it, Super, Trump could cure cancer and you'd complain he took too long.

China needs to maintain their spy network well oiled, if not they’ll fall behind on their technology. They may have US or other foreign nation trained scientists but they don’t have the budget or freedom within their borders to do the R&D. I’m sorry for the scientists, but do believe the Chinese will be tightening their screws a lot tighter, and so will other foreign nations. I think Trump is putting the wall in the wrong place.

Well put Matt

China has been stealing intellectual property from around the world for decades. It will be painful, but it is time to cut them off. Completely.

Remove "most favored nation" status.

Revoke all Chinese student visas.

Make Chinese visas EXTREMELY difficult to get for travel to the USA.

The idea that if we played capitalist with them, they'd come around and open up everything and respect their people has failed. Time to cut-bait.

No parts made in China should be allowed into the USA in 5 yrs. For the next 5 yrs, other countries and US companies should pick up the manufacturing for critical components.

The "West" needs to stop paying China to abuse their people, put them in re-education camps, steal our technology, and help to educate their students.

Clearly, the "west" is stupid.

I can see a few problems with that.

1) The U.S corperate sector is in no way loyal to U.S interests or displays any sort of patriotic instinct. Its all about the $$$ and shareholder returns. Typical capitalist you could say and in normal times there might not be too much wrong with that, save environmental/labour concerns etc.

These aren't normal times, but its pretty clear that the U.S business world has woken up to the fact.

Look at Apples reaction to the extremely limited measures already in place.

2) U.S universities are going to cry foul over student visas. Again, for them its business as usual. Same thing in Australia. The universities are already petrified of an immigration cut fearing they will loose the golden goose.

Increasingly though, they are on the wrong side of public opinion. Most Australians now want an immigration cut. Nothing too savage. It also overlooks the fact that increasingly our overseas student intake is coming from other countries apart from China, like S.E Asia and South America which is a positive

3) Favoured nation status? That should have been at least a decade ago, if not two. Give it to India.

4) You must walk the fine line between targeted activities against CCP overreach and actions by the Chinese state in certain situations and promoting a stance which is outright xenophobic. This isn't about starting a race war. Its a very fine line to walk in China's case because they have such strong control over their citizens, but its a compromise the U.S and the West generally needs to find.

Is America big on civil nuclear technology? I was under the impression China already lead in this field along with some European countries, like France.

Come folks, China has been nicking technology from the west going on FOUR decades at least, ALL politicians & big Biz ARE to blame for the monster that China has become!

All of the west has fed the beast, but as I have been saying for AGES on jt now it is LONG over due to STOP allowing China to pilfer & force tech transfer etc!

Hell I remember in my Uni days in the early 80s we had lots of Chinese students in engineering, computers & advanced mathematics. These students studied an insane amount.

They were all worried that if their results didn't please the commie govt back home that they would get yanked & there would potentially be consequences for "wasting" the "peoples" money.

The budget for photocopying & book buying by these students was huge, they were clearing gathering info bigtime in plain sight.

And NOW its all come back to bite in the butt, bigtime!

re: The Chinese want advanced technology, not more of the junk they already have.

haha, good one, especially since the Russian made parts were "Made in China"

Re: Anyone else ever wonder why more than half the goods purchased in the world is MADE IN CHINA to include the American flag trump loves to hug so much or why the US is trillions of dollars in debt to CHYNUH?"

Stop your wondering, turn to the Democrats and Clintonites..

IT was Clinton who gave the US markets and technology away to China, It was Clinton who did nothing when the Chinese shot down the US spy plane and then in front of the whole world cut it in half and Clinton did nothing. It was the Clinton Foundation along with Hillary Clinton who made deals with WalMart to bring in all the Chinese cheap made goods. IT was Obama who with hot air allowed the encroachment seen today and did nothing. Now its on the Philippine's doorstep and if Japan doesn't build on the Senkakus\ like Russia will colonize them but Japan needs to inact its defense and get its money's worth in what it pays the US to kick the Russians out and push the Chinese back.

Trump’s been disappointing on China. He passed on labeling them a currency manipulator, he flat out said it was his priority to protect Chinese jobs, and this statement is empty, promising they will look really, really hard at documents for a company already known to break the rules.

At least he’s continuing Obama’s policy of sending hardware near the disputed islands. But this was one area I was hoping I’d like to see him take action on.

If previous POTUS had been intelligent, Trump wold not have to be dealing with china as he is today. I measure intelligence by the security around the world that exists today. Our previous presidents have made the US and western world very vulnerable to the likes of Xi and even Putin. Stupid president? He hasn’t started a war..yet. Other ‘intelligent’ presidents wasted billions and billions on military activity and in the meantime have not made our world safer. This time stupid is better than blood thirsty and an unsafe world.

Trumps means the opposite to what he says, so this should be read as a confession.

Best president ever.

I have to agree with this move. The Chinese are positioning themselves to try to use force to support their expansion and hegemony. Better to not hand them anything that would help. It's a pity but that's the road China has chosen.

Trump and company are on a quest to NORMALIZE stupidity and it is working very BIGLY, as a matter of fact it the BIGGEST EVER!

President Donald Trump vowed a hard line on trade, bluntly warning China not to think Americans are "stupid."

Too late

Oh, they don't THINK Americans are stupid, they KNOW -- look who's the president, after all.

exactly

Don't really like the dude but he's right on with this policy.

If fact, I no longer support exporting nuclear technology to any country.

@burnbush No problem, Russia will happily fill the void.

That would probably be seen as acceptable by many in Trump's base given so many of them have long lauded Putin. Included in Trump's base are lots of extreme rightists, and Putin's about as far right as any world leader today.
