Many US Presidents have tried to get Greenland and they've always failed. The claim that Greenland is a necessity for US defense isn't really true. It makes some things easier, but there are other methods available too.

Greenland should look to throw the US out and make that public. Just say they are studying removing the US leases on all land in their country. They can do without the US more than the US can do without Greenland's help.

If the government of Greenland say 'no' to the US, Denmark may be duty bound to defend it.

An attack by one NATO nation on another, in this case, the US on Danish forces, could theoretically lead to the expulsion of the US from NATO. The reality is that NATO is, like the EU, a fudge, and they would most likely just urge restraint, whilst doing nothing. I doubt it would take the US military long given their weaponry.

If Greenland say 'Yes', then (without bloodshed) Denmark would lose colonial oversight (and all those mineral resources) to the US. When your colonies want to do their own thing, the right to self-determination theoretically kicks in (except in the EU for Spanish regions, the Chagos Islands etc). It might be wise to keep Danish and US soldiers apart in the next NATO exercise. Denmark v US at the next world cup might get a bit fruity.

The people of Greenland get cash and maybe even US citizenship. Washington gets a large chunk of Arctic-European turf, resources, airspace connecting Europe and America and a new forward military base for missiles pointing at Russia/France. Plus lots of mining concessions.
