"The 15-ton behemoth—called the “massive ordnance penetrator,” or MOP"

Whatever happened to the MOAB - or 'Mother Of All Bombs?"

Was that shelved?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ah yes, Obama, this year's peace person!

Details about Iran’s once-secret program have come out slowly and often under duress, as with last month’s surprise confirmation of the hidden underground development site near Qom.

"Surprise confirmation of a hidden underground development site"? Ah yes, more AP propaganda. The facility was not yet completed, and Iran disclosed it long before it was required to do so according to the NPT rules. If anyone has a secret nuclear weapons program it is Israel, why no mention of this?

I wonder if this has anything to do with Iran moving away from dealing oil in US dollars, which Saddam had also done shortly before Iraq was "busted".

but the West suspects a covert bomb program that may be only a year or so away from fruition.

Yes, the west often has "intelligence" of wrong doing before they attack, and after it serves its purpose, that intelligence is exposed as "faulty". BTW, where are Saddam's WMD, and what happened to the anthrax that an Iraqi agent handed to Atta. There is always plenty of convenient "intelligence" to provide an excuse to attack.

The three stooges of MIGHT(USA,PERSIANS,RUSSIANS) ,at it again .

ALL 3,competing for ALFRED NOBLE's Prize, who is also swedish bombmaker.

The 2010 NOBLE PRIZE FOR BUNKER BOMBS(WMD) goes to USA.

Love affairs with bombs can't wait.

How romantic and cute.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen has called a strike an option he doesn’t want to use.

"I don't want to use it, but I need it fast."

Oh, Are we really supposed to believe that after 8 years of the bush-cheney military industrial complex they dont have hundreds of these so called bunker busters manufactured and ready for deployment? Puh-leeze.

The 15-ton behemoth—called the “massive ordnance penetrator,” or MOP—will be the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal and carry 2,400 kilograms of explosives. The bomb is about 10 times more powerful than the weapon it is designed to replace.

It's always nice to have another card to play...

Sabiwabi, there is nothing secret about Israel’s nuclear weapons, if there was then you wouldn’t know about them, would you? You may not like being told this but the real difference between Israel and Iran having nuclear weapons is that Israel have had such weapons for quite some time as defensive weapons while no sane person trusts Iran to have such a weapon and not use them. I will simplify this for you, normal people really don’t mind a sane man having a gun for self defence, but they are really reluctant to have a raving crazy person having a gun. Now the time for you to start your rambling is when the US has finally built this big bomb AND sold it to Israel, then you might have something worth saying. But as yet the bomb hasn’t even been built for the US and nobody, other than you, has thought about Israel getting it. Taking a situation and twisting it with your paranoia is one thing you are good at, but seeing into the future is not one of your strong points. Yes, I do admit that you have strong points, I will reframe from saying what they are otherwise JT will delete me again.

"the holy city of Qom"

What makes it holy?

We don't need the bunker-busters. Obama will never give the order to use them.

And this is what is wrong with the US military, the over dependence on technology. Anyone would think they were scared of filling a few body bags. Even back in Vietnam, it was technology this, technology that, blah, blah, blah. However, at the end the day, wars are not about bombing your enemy from 10 miles up, but rather having him dance on the end of your bayonet. Technology only goes so far. When Rummy was running the Department of Defense, those people making up the rooting squad (those who have never seen combat) were mxsturbating about the Massive Ordnance Air Blast MOAB (a modern version of the daisy cutter - a real "mine is bigger than yours" weapon). Now all the pencil necks are tugging their meat for this bunker-buster weapon. Give it a break. If the US really wanted to win wars and not just have them run along for the benefit of a few profiteers, they would be going toe-to-toe with the enemy on the ground, put in the infantry, bring weapons to bear, and kill him.

Trust me, the only way to make sure you eliminate somebody is a couple of rounds through the head, not by giving some jet jocks a new bit of iron to drop (before heading back to the O club for a nice cold drink).

Talk about stating the obvious...

Boeing shares going up,they are involved in this project. They have more money for their future superjet projects.

Russian Nuke Tsar bombs projects on freeze, now the russian also need start to another race, to build super bombs of the conventional kind.

Russian military industry shares also may go up,as they also try to make a similar bomb. Persian military industrial complex shares also going up.

Nuke race is freezed but another non-nuke conventional bomb race has started.

Lovely quote: "bunkers buried underground and shielded by 4,535 kilograms of reinforced concrete"

Not 4,530 kg or 4,540 kg, but said bunkers all calculated down to the last precise 5kg of concrete... hahaha

I guess the original quote was in pounds, and some clever dick has done the fine calculations and not rounded it off! Give the man a banana...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Actually, come to think of it, the US doesn't actually need to make one.

The threat of such a thing must have sent the Iranian and N Korean engineers scuttling back to their drawing boards. Will the next few years' budgets be allocated to extra concrete? ... LOL

nanda - I saw that quote awhile ago and laughed but negleted to comment on it. Hee hee! Thanks!

Yes we can. What happened to all the peace talk?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Exactly, I could not agree with you more. That is why I am not so worried about Iran having nuclear weapons (much less a peaceful nuclear energy program) considering their history as a peaceful country that has not attacked its neighbors in centuries. Compare this with Israel's long list of war crimes and crime against humanity, constantly attacking its neighbors.

I'm sorry but any informed normal person should be scared of Israel being in possession of nuclear weapons.

"Israel's lomg list of war cimes and crime against humanity, constantly attacking its neighbors"

Sabi, you really should read some real news instead of these anti-Israel blogs.

The Obama administration’s plans to bring the bomb on line more quickly

Wonder if the NPP committee is having buyer's remorse.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The MOP for mopping up underground nuke labs. Money better spent on this than the missle shield that was aggrevating the Russians.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Heh, liberals heads around the world are exploding because Obama now agrees with McCain that bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran does have a ring to it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What do you use to clean up scum, a MOP, lovely.

Whatever happened to the MOAB - or 'Mother Of All Bombs'

It's still in use, its just very rare that we need anything larger than a conventional cluster bomb or guided missile to take out a big area. Plus the MOAB is for use against soft or medium targets, not for petetrating hardened structures like mountains.

"I don't want to use it, but I need it fast."

"Talk softly but carry a big stick"

Oh, Are we really supposed to believe that after 8 years of the bush-cheney military industrial complex they dont have hundreds of these so called bunker busters manufactured and ready for deployment?

Artical didn't say the old bombs sucked but that we are making newer, bigger ones in case our current pea shooters don't carry enough umph.

And this is what is wrong with the US military, the over dependence on technology

Given the option of loosing no men and killing a whole bunch with technology or loosing a couple men and killing a whole bunch by throwing soldiers at the problem I'd side with the technology to. It's not as if we shrink from equipping the troops (while maintenance is an issue) the men and women of the U.S military are among the best equipped in the world and recieve some of the most intense training.

Anyone would think they were scared of filling a few body bags.

Those 'anyone's would be the ones wouldn't be the ones having the cowardly technology dropped on their heads would they? The same 'anyone's that are more than willing to fill every black bag available with whatever remains they can scrape off the landscape I take it?

More Saber-rattling by Nobel Peace Prize Winner Obama.

sabi: I'm sorry but any informed normal person should be scared of Israel being in possession of nuclear weapons.

Israel has had nukes for half a century and never used them, despite the never-ending quest by the Muslim Arabs to destroy the country. Rest your worried mind about Israel's nukes. Best concern yourself with a fundamentalist Islamic regime like Iran and their terrorist proxies Hamas and Hezbollah getting nukes.

Depends on who you are. If you are an Israeli wanting to terrorize your neighbors and occupy the entire Middle East region, then yes I guess you should fear a fundamental Islamic regime that cannot be bribed with money. But for the rest of the world, a nuclear armed Israel should be feared.

You consider the UN an anti-Israel blog?

Among other things.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sabiwabi:

" You consider the UN an anti-Israel blog? "

Err, yes. The UN has long been a notorious platform for muslim countries who en bloc continue to lambast Israel and turn two blind eyes to any wrongs in islamic countries.

" The Pentagon is speeding up delivery of a colossal bomb designed to destroy hidden weapons bunkers buried underground and shielded by 4,535 kilograms of reinforced concrete. "

That is Obama waving a wet noodle to Iran.

There is no way in the world that Obama has any interest or spine to stand in the way of Irans holy bomb. He has already accepted the fact of a nuclear Iran; ridiculous postering such as leaking news about bunker busters nonwithstanding.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

if they are saying that they "plan" to build it, it means the US has had it in stock for a few years now. A simple scaling up of current technology is all that is needed. Since it's non-nuclear the US can test quickly in US facilities...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They will NOT use it.

Instead, Obama will give Ahmedinejad even more meaningless "deadlines" and "ultimate deadlines" and "ultimate ultimate deadlines", which Iran laughingly ignores, and the Iranian mullahs have Allahs bomb.

Wait and see.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

you build a bigger bomb and they dig a deeper bunker. pretty soon they will need to use nukes to destroy the other country's nuke facilities and we're all dead.
