The only thing I can say that is positive about this is USA’s four biggest arms dealers will get a massive windfall.

Taiwan should buy local made Chinese weapons. Cheap, instructions/training in Chinese and can bring stability.

The US would send China back to the Stone Age if the latter were foolish enough to attack Taiwan.

19 ( +30 / -11 )

Not so sure that the US would intervene in the event of a China/Taiwan "incident". Picking on small less well armed countries is one thing. but a full blown war with a nuclear power is very different.

Yes, that is the thinking of the newly installed administration. Wait for more mongering in Syria, but do not expect them to help Taiwan against Beijing. Sad.

-11 ( +14 / -25 )

Even with only indirect help from the US, Taiwan will repel any Chinese agressor. It will pretty much be similar the German attack on the UK.

The Us, I think will only interfere should China turn to nuclear tactical weapons. The black eye, Xi gets with a botched invasion he can’t survive. Taiwan and the HK’ers there will fight to the last man and women.

Taiwan has a much better trained and motivated army. Smaller, but it will stand long enough till the US and others are forced to intervene.

That would just make China stronger and increase likelihood of Chinese takeover of Taiwan and an end to Taiwan's self determination and freedom. So for their own interests in staying free that is a very poor idea.

And why you would think that China doesn't think exactly the same about a conflict with the United States?

That is exactly what has kept China from taking over Taiwan since 1949.

Cop that Commies. What you gonna do? The U.S. and Q.U.A.D. will finish you forever should you raise one finger to the free nation of Taiwan.

Time to put two big, permanent U.S. bases on Taiwan - and have U.S. carriers circling the area permanently.

Have a cry Communist China, you have no chance of ever taking independent Taiwan. The free world is not going to cop it.

13 ( +22 / -9 )

The fact that America continues to voice support for assisting Taiwan militarily if attacked, has it boxed into a corner. If it fails to go to Taiwan's defense after a Chinese attack it signals all of America's allies that they can not count on US assistance against a China or Russia attack. It also sends the same message to China and Russia. So America leaves itself no other option but to back up its continued stance of defending Taiwan.

President Xi Jinping has become the most bellicose leader since Mao, describing the seizure of Taiwan as "inevitable".

He will be remembered as the least successful tyrant and even high traitor against ordinary Chinese people.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

Invading Taiwan would be like poking a hornets' nest, and would prove a very costly operation for Beijing that could be the beginning of the end for the autocratic CCP whose eventual demise with the passing of time and in the course of history will also be "inevitable".

13 ( +18 / -5 )

Yes, that is the thinking of the newly installed administration. Wait for more mongering in Syria, but do not expect them to help Taiwan against Beijing. Sad.

Any evidence at all to back this up, or is it more of a feeling you have?

-7 ( +9 / -16 )

Why people are so sure America would win against China in a war? It's not as if America has recent form for losing to a supposed weaker military is it....

-15 ( +7 / -22 )

Wondering if any of the sailors on the port side of the ship gave China the middle finger?!

Let’s hope there is not a conflict, let the Taiwanese live in peace and under their own terms.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

The cost of invading Taiwan for China would be prohibitive to any rational government, unfortunately not only does the CCP leadership operate in a self reinforcing bubble in Beijing, divorced from any real input from the population but also they do not care about and have historically shown a willingness to sacrifice as many lives (other peoples of course) as necessary to gain what they want. So possibly this would not be the deterrent it would be to any other government. Only the destruction of the tools and infrastructure supporting an invasion would stop them.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

The U.S. will be there if Taiwan gets attacked. Guaraneffinteed!

9 ( +14 / -5 )

If China actually attacked Taiwan to invade it, they will regret the awful and extreme destruction that will ravage their Country and their people. Yes it will be a very Big Mess.

The Invasion would ultimately fail, but Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Australia and the U.S. Forces will all be licking some very serious wounds.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

With so many people losing their way of life due to covid I think if China starts a war we would see people enlisting in large numbers to go and fight them.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

The US had no formal alliance to defend Japan as it does with Japan and South Korea. No military basis and coordination.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Meant - no formal alliance to defend “Taiwan”.

China is hell bent on not just Taiwan, Next will be the Islands of Okinawa and the Phillipines, China knows the USA is in Okinawa and 15 min. All hell from JSDF and USAF from Kadena, Ospreys full of Marines will be on their way. The nuke forces from Guam are only a short distance and all our Boomers underwater have so many nukes that China will be an ashtray. USA and the world need to go to the UN and all agree Taiwan is NOT part of China and a sovereign nation. Even at 63 years old am ready to fight for Taiwan and freedom and Democracy.

Do not forget, there are nukes in ammo bunkers at Kadena and they will be armed and ready. I dare China to start an invasion. US forces in South Korea will also be ready as Kim Jung Un would also see an opportunity to try Part 2 of uniting the ROK with the DPRK. WW3 would start.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Taiwan should make it clear to the whole world that any uninvited foreign aircraft entering their airspace will first be warned and then shot down. That will stop Chinese incursions. Freedom is worth defending. The Chinese bully needs to be taught a lesson.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Taiwan should make it clear to the whole world that any uninvited foreign aircraft entering their airspace will first be warned and then shot down. That will stop Chinese incursions.

Unfortunately, Taiwan alone giving warnings to the Communists will certainly NOT stop incursions. The presence of QUAD Carriers and Destroyers, as well as QUAD aerial peotection over Taiwanese airspace will deter the Commies.

All QUAD members should be sending much more manpower in the form of Carriers, Destroyers, Frigates, Bombers and Fighter jets to assist Taiwan against their common enemy - PRC. When push comes to shove, the QUAD members have Taiwan's back.

You also told us the Chinese was in free fall.

@ Jimizo - make no mistake, the Communist China economy is on its knees. Dont believe one word of the PRCs mouthpieces, my friend. And it will certainly get even worse for them with the Free World pulling back from China in light of these daily outrages, incursions and mass genocide.

Boycott Communist China. NOW.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

The US cannot and will not go to a full scale war with China! It doesn’t matter if there is a Republican or Democrat President / administration. The only way they will have a war is if China attacks the US directly or any of its bases abroad. Anyone here who thinks that the US can win a war with China is only fooling themself! China is a nuclear powerhouse and other factors such as Russia will come into play if the US and China go to war! It’s only muscle flexing on show! Instead of a full scale war we will probably witness a lot of cyber war in the near future between the US, China, Russia and N.Korea.

-12 ( +0 / -12 )

Even with only indirect help from the US, Taiwan will repel any Chinese agressor.

How do you know that, and what exactly do you expect the CCP-friendly government in the US to do when Beijing begins to encroach slowly on the open sea access to Taiwan? Mind you, Taiwan is WITHIN the "dotted line" that marks the sea area claimed by the CCP, and which is increasing accepted in the West.

The CCP has lots of time, and as we saw with HK, the takeover can be gradual.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

Anyone here who thinks that the US can win a war with China is only fooling themself!

Not only do I believe the US can win a total war with China, they will annihilate the PRC as we know it. The US and QUAD have to win. There is no other option for the free world.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

@Fighto... make no mistake, the Communist China economy is on its knees.

Get your facts right! China’s economy isn’t on its knees! It grew by 2.3% in 2020 compared to 6% in 2019 and 6.7% in 2018. Corona virus can be blamed easily for 2020 and yet they did much better than most other countries such as the US and Japan! Trumps trade war affected Americans far worse than China! People without knowledge of the economy should think twice before commenting or at least Google some facts before writing crap!

Nailed what? Rusty nails that don't work? Don't forget mate like we don't know where the so called secret bases are! Eyes are everywhere, lips are sealed!!! You can hit what you can't see!! I am speaking from the know!! I do it everyday!! Mate!

Xi says seizure of Taiwan will happen.

Taiwan and US have defense agreements.

CCP-Chinese think are confused if they believe Taiwan is part of the mainland. It is not. The same response will happen if China attacked Japan when they attack Taiwan. Count on it.

Equipment and soldiers will be sent to the region and a full scale war will begin.

Taiwan isn't Hong Kong or Tibet. China needs to understand that. It won't just be the US military that comes.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

If China successfully invades Taiwan, and the US will lose credibility with its allies such as Japan, Germany, and South Korea, and we will become the next Argentina or Spain. A fallen and declining power. But at least we can retreat to a nice and safe continent away from all that crap.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Wait for more mongering in Syria, but do not expect them to help Taiwan against Beijing. Sad.

The mere fact we are going there in that region again is indication enough that this old guy will get us bogged down into another war.

The mere fact we are going there in that region again is indication enough that this old guy will get us bogged down into another war.

If this guy is old then the previous guy is also old since they are both the same generation. When China invades Taiwan, America won't be able to do anything. Impotent.

I'm not aware that this old guy involved America in any wars.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Truman should have let MacArthur go to war against Mao's China after the Korean war.

Now everybody has the nuclear threat and the whole planet can be destroyed if such war happens.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

It appears the cheapest long term solution is to give to Taiwan a dozen of nukes. Everyone will relax and start enjoying life.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I'd like to hear a clear statement from the USA (and other countries) of why they would defend Taiwan's right to independence. Is it because they fully support the UN charter's article on self-determination? Or is it because they think it would benefit their own country? I'd like to think it was the former, but I see no clear evidence that is the case. Why don't we see similar attitudes towards Crimea and Catalonia?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

America will be powerless when China invades Taiwan. Just like what's happening in HK. Where was America on that under the previous old guy.

It is ridiculous to compare HK with Taiwan. HK was signed away by the UK years ago and that the CCP was going to break the 50 treaty was predicted even then.

Fwiw, Trump signed the HK democracy act, removing the privileges and not letting the CCP have it both ways.

While under newly installed executive order signer, the CCP now gives anal swabs to US diplomats, quite clearlz showing who is boss.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

It is ridiculous to compare HK with Taiwan.

Is it? I think it should be up to the people in both places to determine their futures. Regarding the UK's ownership and now China's ownership of Hong Kong, the people of Hong Kong had no say in either.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Xi Jinping wants to go down in history as the man to have restored all of Chinese territory. Hong Kong is now being integrated. The slow takeover of Taiwan failed in recent years, as they have seen CCP rule on the mainland and then Hong Kong. Big Allied fleet coming to the Asian seas soon.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Do you have an imagination of what manpower, weapons, air and marine fleets, logistics and support lines over thousands of miles, the Pacific, would be needed? Forget it, consider it lost territory mid-term, like HongKong and other examples. Nobody will intervene or risk strikes on own homeland for a far away island. What could have helped, a big U.S. or multilateral lead base deployed with accompanying mid-level threatening atomic defense, but that should have probably happened some earlier. I don’t think, China will allow deployment of such an installation on Taiwan and it will interfere if now all that many staff and things would be tried to bring in. On the other hand, Taiwan is still needed because of its technology efforts, still often ahead of mainland China’s. Instead of capturing all they also could try a more cooperative way and let Taiwan do, but demand technological and knowledge ‘peace tax’. Maybe it only depends on Xi and his moods. If he has a bad dream or nightmare with many Winnie-the-Pooh teddy bears, than he catches Taiwan already tomorrow morning....lol

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japan already has a plan and a secret weapon to help defend your freedom!

and other factors such as Russia will come into play if the US and China go to war

The question in on which side ? Does Russia think of China as a potential long term territorial&co ally or just a convenient temporary political ally ? Quite possibly they will suffer from a major communication network problem if things go ashtray.

Taiwan already developed strategy toward defense to kept off China as long as possible. The longer China attack the higher chance others countries move. Thought with covid, do not know how that could impact their prevision of how long is needed to get significant move.

I don´t know why I have to point this out, but the UK only had ownership of a tiny, unsustainable rock. The lease for the New Territories ran out, and thus they returned the rock to mainland China. The contract that the CCP broke only referred to a limited 50 year period of special status, not to self determination.

This is not comparable to Taiwan, which has its own land mass, constitution, government, military etc. When is the last time Hong Kong had an armee, navy, and air force???

The logistics needed to invade Taiwan would be similar to D-Day. However, unlike D-Day, every blind man & his dog would see it coming.

The only way China will get their hands on Taiwan, is if they bomb it into submission.
