Verbal gaffe or sign of trouble? Mixing up names like Biden and Trump have done is pretty common

By LAURAN NEERGAARD

Any parent who’s ever called one of their children by the other’s name — or even the family pet’s name — likely could empathize when President Joe Biden mixed up the names of French leaders Macron and Mitterrand.

The human brain has trouble pulling names out of stuffed memory banks on cue. But when are those and other verbal stumbles normal, and when might they be a sign of cognitive trouble?

“When I see somebody make a flub on TV, I’m really not all that concerned,” said well-known aging researcher S. Jay Olshansky of the University of Illinois at Chicago. “What science will tell you about flubs is that they’re perfectly normal, and they are exacerbated by stress for sure.”

Biden, 81, has a decadeslong history of verbal gaffes. But they’re getting new attention after a special counsel this past week decided Biden shouldn’t face criminal charges for his handling of classified documents — while describing him as an old man with trouble remembering dates, even the date his son Beau died.

That prompted a visibly angry Biden to lash out from the White House, saying, “My memory is fine.” As for his son’s 2015 death from brain cancer, “Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself, it wasn’t any of their damn business,” Biden said.

Biden is not the only candidate making verbal slips. Former President Donald Trump, Biden's likely opponent in the November presidential election, has also. Last month the 77-year-old Trump confused his major opponent for the GOP nomination, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Health experts caution that neither verbal gaffes nor a lawyer's opinions can reveal whether someone is having cognitive trouble. That takes medical testing.

But certain glitches are common at any age.

“To easily recall names, right in the moment, is the hardest thing for us to do accurately,” said Dr. Eric Lenze of Washington University in St. Louis, a geriatric psychiatrist who evaluates cognition in older adults.

Some studies have suggested that everyday “misnaming” may occur when the brain has names stored by category — like your family members or perhaps in Biden’s case, world leaders he’s long known — and grabs the wrong one. Or the miss may be phonetic, as the names of France’s current president, Emmanuel Macron, and former President Francois Mitterrand both begin with “M.” Mitterrand died in 1996.

As for dates, emotion may tag certain memories but not run-of-the-mill ones, such as the special counsel's questions about when Biden handled a box of documents.

“Attaching a calendar date to an event is not really something that the human brain does at any age,” Lenze said. It’s “not like a spreadsheet.”

Whether it's a name, date or something else, memory also can be affected by stress and distractions — if someone's thinking about more than one thing, Olshansky said. And while everybody's had an “it's on the tip of my tongue” lapse, flubs by presidents, or would-be presidents, tend to be caught on TV.

Olshansky watches recordings of his presentations at science meetings and “there isn’t a single time I don’t make a mistake,” he said. “I’m 69 years old, which I do not consider to be old, but I made the same mistakes when I was 39.”

It's reasonable for people to wonder if leaders in their 70s and 80s remain sharp, Lenze said. What's reassuring is if overall, what someone says is overall accurate despite a verbal gaffe.

Some cognitive aging is normal, including delay in memory retrieval. People’s brains age differently, and heart health, blood pressure and physical activity play a role in brain health.

And while Trump often brags about passing a screening-style memory test several years ago, Lenze said the best assessment includes rigorous neuropsychological testing.

Biden is obviously elderly, but Trump's history of distortion, projection and confabulation, even about this this primary school level memory test is much more worrisome.

Or the miss may be phonetic, as the names of France’s current president, Emmanuel Macron, and former President Francois Mitterrand both begin with “M.” Mitterrand died in 1996.

For any who did not catch this particular one, the gaffe went like this:

Hello, Nevada! (Applause.) Hello, hello, hello. What a great crowd.

You know, right - right after I was elected, I went to what they call a G7 meeting, all the NATO leaders. And it was in - it was in the south of England. And I sat down and I said, "America is back."

And Mitterrand, from Germany - I mean, from France looked at me and said - said, "You know, what - why - how long you back for?" [Laughter.] And I looked at him, and the - and the Chancellor of Germany said, "What would you say, Mr. President, if you picked up the paper tomorrow in the London Times, and London Times said, 'A thousand people break through the House of Commons, break down the doors, two Bobbies are killed in order to stop the election of the Prime Minister.' What would you say?"

Source: CSPAN.

Back in college, the department I was enrolled in at the time, used to monitor media trends towards identifiable reporting and publishing bias. With that background somewhat in mind, I waited about 34 hours and then searched domestic and international wires over this specific item. And was not too surprised to find it only inside eight domestic venues and about twenty internationally. The former mostly along party lines, while the world's media showed up particularly in France (no surprise) but not in Germany (a little surprised).

The latest gaffe, by comparison, seems to have attracted wide and across party lines, likely due to it happening alongside of the release of the special counsel's report. But it also prompted some articles, like this one, offering to explain it to the public.

More election year fun and surprises await an already fatigued and weary voting public. As far as media balance? Much room for improvement.

76% in NBC polling this year concerned Biden's too old. 62% in NBC poll believe it's VERY serious problem, that he's unfit for office. Majority Democrats in NBC poll agree, though bit less than Republicans / Independents.

That's what Americans believe. Biden's health status and Polling has ONLY trended down. It's NOT getting better.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Related to Biden health and fitness in NBC polling, Americans do not believe he's actually running 1600, that his policies and agenda being controlled by others who are unelected and serving their special interests.

Americans see an elderly President who is not capable and thus not in really in control and this is why the worlds on fire and the US in chaos. People do not believe in the future as a result.

That's what Americans believe. Biden's health status and Polling has ONLY trended down. It's NOT getting better.

If you talk about age, Biden is just 4 years older than Trump, but quite a bit healthier.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

Remember George W. Bush? He was infamous for gaffes, like "It's hard to put food on your family."

Biden saying Mexico instead of Egypt doesn't concern me as he's been thinking much about Mexico recently and followed up by saying it bordered Gaza, so his meaning was quite clear. It's not like he confused the two countries; he just misspoke. But Trump with Halley and Pelosi could really have been confusion.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

As we get older we all experience some form of memory loss, but with some it’s more severe than with others, in Biden’s case it is getting progressively worse and more frequent to the point he needs help and notes to keep him focused and to remember. He couldn’t remember the name of Hamas the other day, spoke of people like Mitterrand that are already dead, and that’s going way back. He couldn’t remember where he put some of those documents, when he was VP or when his own son died. He hugs his sister mistaking her for his wife, he shakes hands in the air, he gets constant blackouts, speaks more and more incoherently, "Joe Biden has told aides and outside advisers that Attorney General Merrick Garland did not do enough to rein in a special counsel report stating that the president had diminished mental faculties, according to two people close to the president." What this really says is that Biden is upset that they didn't lie about him in the report. The Dems consider lying one of their greatest attributes, so it's easy to understand why he's upset.

Now, if this had been Trump, the left would 110% agree with the findings and push that he would immediately step aside, not to mention, he would have been impeached for trying to ask his head of DOJ to try and block the results of the report. Glad he didn’t confuse Garland with Cornpop, so that’s somewhat of a slight relief.

Mixing up names is common for older folks, myself included....though one candidate sure seems to have a hard time remembering women; Marla or Jean? Nikki or Nancy? Stormy or Melania?

But if you think "you need an ID to buy bread", you are deep into dementia...

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Mixing up names is common for older folks,

Not on this level. In the beginning 3 years ago it wasn’t as bad with Biden. But now it’s worsening, it’s not going to get better and the WH won’t be able to keep it under taps because the media won’t let them, so they will get hit harder and harder with each episode he has going forward.

myself included....though one candidate sure seems to have a hard time remembering women; Marla or Jean? Nikki or Nancy? Stormy or Melania?

Well, when it’s a constant and daily occurrence and multiple times in a day, I’ll start to be concerned.

But if you think "you need an ID to buy bread", you are deep into dementia...

I would think hugging your sister like your wife and she’s telling you, bro, your wife is over there is more than a slight slip of memory loss. 77% of Americans are deeply concerned with Biden’s constant and growing memory loss.

He couldn’t remember the name of Nancy Pelosi, mistaking it for Nikki Haley the other day; speaks of the 2020 election against Obama, or sometimes Hilary, instead of Biden. He spoke of averting World War 2 and struggles to enunciate words.

But at the end of the day, it’s easy to isolate a gaffe or two and read too much into it.

Or the time Trump thought the Balkans were the Baltics.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

In the same poll, fully 77% said Biden is too old to be effective for four more years. Not only do 89% of Republicans say that, so do 69% of Democrats. That view is held across age groups, not just by young people, though older Democrats specifically are more concerned.

Biden ‘willfully’ took all of those documents even tho he knew senators and vice presidents aren’t allowed to do so- at a time when his mental capacity wasn’t diminished. If there ever was such a time. So in other words he is too old and mentally not up to accepting the consequences for his illegal actions.

And his reason for not recommending charges is that Biden’s mental incapacity would prevent a conviction. Hardly “clearing him of wrongdoing”.

Someone please tell the rest of us how the person who is at the helm of our country…. Is supposed to be our ‘commander in chief’ but doesn’t have the mental capacity to deal with the consequences of behavior he knew was illegal at the time he took the documents- can remain in the Oval Office and still be considered our president???!!! but they do. Did you not see all the pictures of the over 300 pages of classified documents Joe had?

willfully possessed and shared classified information as a private citizen.

Biden complied with a subpoena,

It’s his own DOJ, go figure.

And?

Trump violated his subpoena even after his lawyer told him that was ILLEGAL..

The FBI also...

Thanks for admitting what Trump did it was illegal - just like his lawyer told him...

Yep, just ignore all that "re-hide and destroy the evidence part"....ROFL..

Or in Biden’s case,

Ignore'd it again...so was Trump telling his aide to destroy evidence a crime? Answer it or you're trapped again...

Did Trump commit a crime by telling his aide to destroy evidence? Yes or no...

Biden committed a crime

Trapped X3....

What a perfect example of how desperate they are -

No, he just took him out.

Who?

as that somehow is related to Trump bragging his warplan was still classified after he said he declassified it...

Oh, Lincoln you off the rails all the time, all the time. Lol

As clear an admission of defeat as I've seen...they are trapped...

More predictions

No, a promise

Make it 62 times - and then still fail - that's MAGA-world...

- even after his Mayorkas flub last week...

Thankfully for Moore switching his vote, they can try again, but this time they have the votes

But your prediction that he would be impeached last week was WRONG....

Or the time Trump tried to deflect from anger over hosting a Saudi LIV golf tournament at his club by saying “Nobody’s ever gotten to the bottom of 9/11.”

This was AFTER a full term in office.

Well the report itself said "there was a shortage of evidence", so there is that.

From the report:

"We do not know why, how, or by whom, the documents were placed in the box"

"We do not know whether, or when Mr Biden carefully reviewed the box's, contents."

"In addition to the shortage of evidence, there are other innocent explanations for the documents that we cannot refute."

Both clearly in severe decline.

Happens to many at their ages.

Neither in a position to carry out the duties of a job of that importance.

Thanks for admitting what Trump did it was illegal

I was talking about going through his home. ILLEGAL without lawyer representation.

Ignore'd it again...so was Trump telling his aide to destroy evidence a crime? Answer it or you're trapped again...

Other reports say he never said that. No trap.

Trapped X3....

0 trap

As clear an admission of defeat as I've seen...they are trapped...

I see it differently.

Make it 62 times - and then still fail - that's MAGA-world...

Hardly

But your prediction that he would be impeached last week was WRONG....

As well as your predictions he would get thrown off the ballot.

Beg to differ. Trump wants to take a cognitive test, Biden nowhere to be found and then there’s this damning news. I know you’re not American and don’t under how this works but this man is a very important and credible Democratic strategist kind of a genius in many ways and he says this…..

If any Democrat has some form of credibility it’s him.

Then there was the time while standing in front of the grave of the son of his chief of staff, who had died in Afghanistan, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?” IN FRONT OF THE GOLD STAR FATHER (who later went on the record confirming the story).

But misspeaking, yeah. Totally the same thing….

Biden didn’t even remember when his son died, if you can’t even remember that most crucial detail….

That prompted a visibly angry Biden to lash out from the White House, saying, “My memory is fine.”

This article conveniently left out the fact that minutes after saying his memory is fine Joe called President of Egypt President of Mexico. Talk about driving the point home.

Just let the old man retire in peace and enjoy some gardening & fishing already.

Or the time Trump didn’t visit the cemetery in France for the fallen from WWI (Not the second one that Trump thinks Biden is about to start) because he didn’t want his combover to get wet.

That actually happened. So there’s that.

Yes, an honest and sincere look at both of them tells us they are in no condition to lead the US.

Trump mixed up Pelosi and Haley.

Brain is mush.

Joe called President of Egypt President of Mexico.

Come on man, don’t have know? He “stutters”!

which totally covers using totally different words too, but just for Biden.

everyone else, stuttering is that the correct word just takes longer to

That actually happened. So there’s that.

Just trying to understand the rant and correlation of how that fits with Biden doing less and is capable of his duties, I mean, when the most smartest of Democrat strategists comes out and notices that Biden’s dementia is worsening and he’s trying to warn his fellow Democrats they are headed towards a cliff, I would definitely pay attention.

I was not aware that in addition to being a SC, the lawyer is also a board-certified neurologist.

Oh wait, he isn’t

So this is speculation (that Biden counters).

what’s not speculative is that Biden isn’t under indictment and Trump is. In four different jurisdictions.

And the time he had to have the name of the destroyer McCain covered up during his trip to Japan to assuage his tissue-thin ego.

Because that’s a sign of emotional stability…
