Vietnam says China fired water cannon, rammed ships near oil rig

Wonder... where are those who fiercely claim the "atrocities Japan did to China", because of history, geography and/or human rights?

Shouldn't they be here to advocate for the same matters that China is doing to other countries?

They don't make a public spectacle of it because they share a land border, but Vietnam is one of the foremost proponents of US influence in E/SE Asia, nor do they have a high opinion of the PRC. I could see Vietnam even joining a security framework with the US. This just pushes the date closer.

Once and for all, this issue must be resolved multilateral and not trash talk of bilateral by bully communist China. U.N. must get involve, or condemn and even expel China from the organization if not abides by the resolution. In reality, this bully theater will play on and on world powerful nations see war is coming. China will drag and block every steps along the way, thus showing how selfish and awful they will be. China is building the empire upon the hollow ground.

China making enemies around all its borders. Another country did that over 70 years ago and it didn't work out too well for them.

@johnBecker If the Term controlled is the proper claiming format, then, when Japan controlled the greater part of China in world war two they won the claim the right to China.... China has control of that area by use of military force. which mean they stole it.

China China China, Can anyone actually feel sympathy over the ordeals they went through during WWII when they behave in such a drastic aggressive way to all its neighbors. I honestly believe these asian nations should band togther against china stop trade and discuss invasion.

The funny thing is that while the People's Republic whinge and moan about World War 2, its really only Taiwan who have the right to be angry at Japan but they remain civil.

@ John Becker - there was actually a brief skirmish with live fire over the Paracels, which were, at that time, controlled by Viet Nam but claimed by China. China came out on top and is now exercising it's "claim." This is act one of the Chinese use of military force against the neighbors. It's a bad situation.

I hope the Philippines keeps the Chinese fishing boat for a long time. Maybe they should slap a lien on it and demand payment....

The article says the islands in question are controlled by China but claimed by Vietnam. Doesn't that mean this action would be comparable to Japan putting an oil rig in the waters of the Senkakus? Before you give me the thumbs down, stop and think about the difference between "controlled" and "claimed."

See, this is the issue with China lately - they do a lot of disputes unilaterally, but when it's done to them like Japan officially nationalizing Senkaku, they complain and send vessels. If they're such good neighbors, why can't they talk this out and maybe share joint projects instead. That's because they don't want to be good neighbors (being good neighbors require give and take), don't even want to talk to their neighbors, and most importantly not interested in sharing.
