Walter Mondale, Carter's vice president, dies at 93

Another giant of the American Left who left the country better than he found it.

Hadn’t heard this guys name before today, but RIP.

“History has vindicated me that we would have to raise taxes,” he said. “It was very unpopular, but it was undeniably correct.”

I hereby deny that that was correct. I’m not sure of the basis on which he might claim that people must undeniably hand over more of their money to the government. Fanciful dreams?

Do you think that the government should go into ever increasing debt, fxgai? Or do you just hate infrastructure, education, the police force, firemen, the coast guard, the military, safe food, drinkable water, and old and poor people not dying of preventable disease?

My condolences to the late Walter Mondale. 

I remember him mostly as Ambassador to Japan and appearing on TV together with then Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, who announced to our great joy that USMC Air Station Futenma would be returned in five to seven years. That was in 1996 and twenty-five long years have passed since that promise was made. 

It' natural the base couldn't have been returned in due time because of a fettering string attached to it: Build a replacement and in Okinawa at that. I wonder how the late Mondale is looking at the current state of affairs concerning Futenma and the the poor U.S. policy which he represented and was obliged to carry out.

His trouncing by Reagan was a joy to behold.

He lost re-election to the Veep ticket, got clobbered by Reagan in one of the most lopsided defeats in history, then lost his bid to be a governor of his own home state. lol. In other words, a "giant" of the left!

One of the more decent politicians from one of the more civilized states. RIP Walter Mondale.

RIP. His biggest success as VP was negotiating the release of the hostages trapped in the US Embassy in Tehran.

Fortunately, the late Mr Mondale can now be relieved that he is now only the third worst VP in more recent history(#2 - Biden, #1 - Harris, #4 - GHWB).

US policy isn’t preventing the closure of Futenma.

You have at least acknowledged that the U.S. policy is responsible for Futenma not to have been returned as promised. If it's not merely the U.S. policy that is preventing Futenma's return, what is it?

It's rather good to know that Jimmy Carter is still surviving, leading tributes to Mondale.

A very good man. RIP.

I recall from Mondale’s presidential debate when he was able to laugh so easily when Reagan made a joke about Mondale’s relative lack of experience. You don’t see that kind of collegiality anymore. His belief in government control of people’s lives made him a terrible candidate for president as evidenced by his association with the Carter presidency. But like many naive Socialists - he meant well. He just believed that the people did not deserve the rewards of their own labor.

He was a decent person from a time in America after the civil rights era and before Obama/BLM when it seemed possible that America might be able to live up to its Founding ideals. Now it’s back to openly racist government policies that explicitly provide government backed benefits to certain groups based on skin color or other identities.

He was a good person no need to over embellish. The hostages were released because he and Carter lost re-election and were afraid that Reagan would be a more competent commander in chief.
